  1. I'll be looking hard at getting a Montana in 1-1.5 years or so when the prices have really come down and *hopefully* Garmin has most, if not all, of the bugs worked out. I just did this with a 3790t and my strategy worked out great. Solid unit for hundreds less than when they first came out. However, selling my dead nuts reliable 60CSx will just NOT happen!
  2. My 60CSx does this automatically. Heck, even my old Magellan SporTrak and VERY old '90s era Lowrance Globalmap 100 do bearing computation, as well, so it's nothing new. Also, NO electronic compass on either of those... I have the BEARING set in a data field on the "compass rose" page. I suggest you read your instruction manual about the BEARING TO function. I also never said anything about using the mag compass alone without a GPS. I referenced this SAME bearing issue in my previous post. Heading or direction you're facing have absolutely NO bearing (pun intended)on the computed BEARING. It's simply a line from where you are TO your destination. It ONLY changes as your position changes. Again, heading has nothing to do with it. NO electronic compass needed for a BEARING from present position to selected destination. Then take the bearing from the GPS, spin it in on the mag compass dial, turn to put "red in the shed" and follow the direction of travel arrow (top of compass) to destination. Easy enough for ya? And, I don't use a Silva. I use a Brunton. If I get no response from ya (like the last time you where schooled), I'll understand... It's okay...as long as you learned something...
  3. Would you be able to overlap a topo map from gpsfiledepot on that same Bird's Eye imagery and have it work/be legible?
  4. You're kidding, right? A calculator? Seriously? You must not know how to spin the bearing on a magnetic compass that you pull right off your GPS. You don't even have to consider magnetic deviation if you set your NORTH UP reference to magnetic north on your GPS. Or, get a magnetic compass that allows you to dial in the correction for the area (can get this off the GPS, too) and set the GPS map up reference to True North. Then, when set on the orienteering dial, the "direction of travel" arrow (not the magnetic needle in the center) on a magnetic compass most definitely WILL point to your destination, i.e. cache. No calculator even remotely required...
  5. All of this electronic compass or not discussion can be solved with ONE easy task. Calibrate your "internal compass". Always know where North is and be able to instantly point to it without any external aid. Everything else will fall into place if you can do that. An electronic (or even magnetic) compass is not required if you can do this with your GPS map set to NORTH UP and have the required ability to ORIENT yourself and your GPS to NORTH. Proceed as required from the BEARING presented, which now correlates to the real world when you and your GPS unit are facing North... In the US, the difference between True North and Magnetic North won't make a heap of difference in the relatively small distances involved on foot with geocaching.
  6. I've had my 60CSx for 3+ years now. Still looks brand new and I use it pretty regularly. Sorry yours appears to be falling apart.
  7. If you're just going to return it...why? I'd see if you can leave those subscriptions "open" and link them to a different compatible unit, should you so desire...
  8. Read the thread yourself. It's not moot because he still NEEDS to get it fixed first by Garmin before returning it. Do you really think the retail store would take back a GPS with an obviously broken screen? Most likely not because they'll think he just dropped it.
  9. I was talking about him not getting it fixed at ALL, if he decided not to pay their ridiculous "Garmin tribute".
  10. Guess you don't understand the concept of MAKING THINGS RIGHT, eh? Did you also factor in the $500+ cost of the unit that was basically unusable if he did NOT try to get it repaired and reimbursed?
  11. Glad you got it worked out. As for the above, it's amazing when you hit them in the "money pocket". I've done the same thing with the Investor Relations sections of websites. The local Gateway computer store (notice how they're all gone now?) tried to jack me over with an extended warranty. The computer died about two months before the warranty expired and they kept it forever. They finally told me they couldn't fix it because it was "too old" (it was only a 2 year warranty) and that I had to come pick it up because the warranty was now expired. They'd had the damned thing for over two months and it expired in THEIR custody. So, emails to all the big wigs on the Investor Relations page got me a call back from some executive vice president of "who cares" who told me they'd send a brand new top of the line system from the previous year, which was much better than what I had. That was in 1999 and the last "big box" computer I ever owned. I build all my own systems now. NEVER give up when a corporation tries to stick it to you as the customer... Another thing that works is buying a new "whatever" and returning the old one IF and ONLY IF the company won't make it right. They'll get their own junk back eventually and they can either eat it or repair it as they see fit.
  12. What do "bugs" have to do with the fact that you broke your screen, rendering it completely unusable and subsequently requiring you to send it in? You sent it in for the SCREEN, not "bugs". That's on you, bub.
  13. And, your point is? Would you rather it sit for weeks (or months) while they fix your exact unit instead of shipping you one they have ready to go?
  14. Ah, I see now... Kind of like the gmapsupp.img thing when renaming individual maps you have stored on the SD card and want to have active on the next start up.
  15. Yea... Thats a bummer but you can get around that by renaming the track you want to load to ACTIVE LOG. It can then be a single track of 10,000 points. What I meant was when I save a track of, say, 3000 points, I want all 3000 points for the resolution and not just 500. I want to see every last "nook and cranny" on Google Earth, for example. If I rename a saved track (that's been truncated to 500 points) "ACTIVE LOG" on the computer, where are these points beyond the 500 coming from? Can't put that data back once it's "lost in translation" from the device to the computer/Mapsource.
  16. Use your googles...ain't that hard... https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-00422-00&cID=145&pID=310 What I want to know is why tracks are truncated to only 500 points when you save them.
  17. Never mind...got it sorted out, not due to any posts here, though...
  18. My 3790t has always been a bit "laggy" when changing menus, entering selections, etc. But, sometimes, it will take several seconds before anything is registered. I especially notice this when it's calculating or trying to give a voice command. Understandable, but I thought this thing was supposed to have a fast processor. I'm running 4.20 firmware, but it's done this on every version I've loaded and I've run just about all of them. 2012.10 map update as well. So, anyone else experience delays on their 3790? It did it today when trying to enter letters on the virtual keyboard and acted "stuck" for quite a long time. I'm debating on whether or not to send it back to Garmin.
  19. Wow, I'll definitely have to pick up one in the very near future. Then, I'll be able to "play along" with all the other Montana owning, fine people here... ...and ecanderson...
  20. You'll need to take that up with Cisco. Had the answer typed prior, but the router decided to go stupid. Suuuuure it did... You were a dog ate my homework kind of student, weren't you?
  21. Cool... What's the weapon of choice? Who is it threatening?
  22. Don't be a hater because you're slow...
  23. Crocodile Dundee? Already been covered. Please try to keep up with the rest of the class...
  24. At least I know the difference between your and you're, including their respective proper usages... Yep you sure do. But don't worry that was just for you, because I know how you love being right. Too bad you can't (or won't) prove your claim to demonstrate you can, just maybe, actually be right as many other people accomplish on a day-to-day basis...
