  1. I picked up the Microsoft Streets and Trips w/ GPS receiver a few months ago. I recently picked up an HP IPaq rx3115 for various uses but figured I would like to use it as a GPS, for maps and for routing as well.

I installed the pocket version of MS Streets and Trips but it does not support routing.

If someone else is using their Palm Pilot or Pocket PC to do similar functions can you let me know what software your are using or how you set it up to do the above functions.

I've seen some commercial programs available for mapping and routing but I'm really not looking to throw another $100+ dollars into it. Your help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

I feel the same, I felt my heart fluttering all the way to the library, my friends thought I was on drugs or something but I was high on you.

Nope, something like that, and nope...too bad, GPS_Paul/Dave! :D I'll keep you in mind, though! :)

I have to be honest, I'm not GPS_Paul, I'm GPS_Dave... I have a Silver/Gray/Green (depends on how the sun shines) 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. I took the bench seats out of the back so I would have more room for my raft and other hiking gear. It was probably sunny the day you met paul and I was heading out to hike 10 miles with some other geocachers.

I too recently scalped myself (well, I left about a 1/4 inch) just for the summer and because I figured it would be cooler when I hiked.

Welcome to the boards and hopefully we can convince you to try out Geocaching.

  3. I can't seem to get that nice, funny, handsome man out of my head! Paul, if you're out there, I'd love to hear from you, and to get to know you better.

Please email...for screening purposes, please insert in the subject line the make/color of the vehicle you were driving, the weather that day, and where you were heading to meet your friends.

  4. Hey guys,

I won the pigging contest, I won the cooking contest and the sack race in the last event I attended. I also found a terracache too!

I am going back to the event log and post 4 additional "attended" notes so I those can get recognition. I came home with a cache in my pants, should I post that as an "attended" log as well?

    :D:D:D

  5. Not if the site was written well.  I don't know whether or not it was, though.

I can say that geocaching.com is the best Rubbermaid Management System on the market, thankyouverymuch.

I for one hate "structured programing". When I was programing, I wrote programs my way, I knew where everything was... in college they tried to teach us structured programing and I hated it.

    "Best rubbermade management system" :D

  6. Jeremy,Jun 6 2005, 09:00 AM The point is irrelevant. Temp caches aren't allowed on the site. And as I indicated in countless threads in the past, I think logging attended twice for an event is stupid, and posting additional logs to "match" whatever "count" you determined your numbers should be is equally stupid. However I have no plans to be the point police and create complicated rules for determining what counts as a find. That is up to the cache listing owner to decide.

However I do reserve the right to stop abuse on this web site, and frown highly upon fake logs on archived caches (or any cache) just to boost numbers here - such as counting finds on other listing sites. Just because I don't want to be the point police doesn't mean I can't take appropriate action against the users who decide to abuse the features of this site.

    I agree.

But as I also said before, I don't lose sleep over it. I stand by my stance that there are no "points" for geocaching and no score to be kept. The site does not keep score but simply offers a history of your finds.

There are no "points" for geocaching? You mean, all along I have been living a lie? :D

  7. Awesome weekend outdoors, thanks.

Spent most of today (it's 4:40pm here now) sitting in the backyard sipping margaritas and watching these guys fly overhead:

I went to "bay day" in Oyster Bay. I got to try out a bunch of Kayaks, I'm getting close to making a purchase! Then it was off to Belmont Lake State Park to get a paddle boat for the kids, then it was off to only one cache. The sun is still shining so I'm going to head outside again.

  8. You need to look a little harder. there are only 2 events listed on the page you link to- neither one of them the event in question- but there are 6 pages of events.

semantics....16 events and the total events were logged 113 times.

semantics....16 events and the total events were logged 113 times.

  9. One cache, one find.

Ah... if only life was that simple.

Exactly. I found 56 caches that day- so I logged 56 finds. Not a real complicated concept, eh?

I think he meant 1 gc.com cache, one find. The caches are not listed on gc.com so why should anyone get credit for finding them? If it was a terracaching cache, would you log it here... oh sorry, you probably would.

And for those that arter saying "It wasn't listed on GC.com- yes, it was Right Here

the caches were not listed on gc.com, the event was.

Before you start slinging the mud, at least take one quick second to check your facts. A quick look at their stats, or even Heaven forbid reading the whole thread before posting would have told you that there were only 33 caches at this one event, and the others were spread out amongst 4 other events.

    My appologies

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.asp...74&ul=MajorBrat

shows 113 events attended and when you click on the link, only 2 events show up.

I am all for a good debate, but mudslinging, especially based on false facts that would have only taken a moment to verify are simple small-mindedness.

What false facts? the above example shows fact, not false facts.

The debate here is whether or not these "temp" caches that are not listed on GC.com should be counted. The debate is for or against posting an "atteded" for each "temp" cache you find.

Personally there are a good deal more people who say this goes against the grain.

Perhaps the powers that be should work on a sub catagory for events in which you find temporary or non-geocaching.com caches but the last I heard, they did not like the idea of temp caches.

  10. So many of you are concerned with the "numbers" we're logging here in WI...have any of you looked at profiles to see that almost half of my personal finds are in other states? On my individual account I have cached in 13 states. Does anyone care about that? No...all you care about is that I logged some dang caches that you didn't get to log because you weren't there that day. You know, the day I spent 6-12 hours walking around in the woods signing my name on logs or stamping my master cache sheet. You weren't there to see me scale the brick wall or walk across the creek on a fallen tree so that I could log a cache. You weren't there to see the mosquitos eating me alive as I stood breathing with the aide of an inhaler while climbing 500 feet up a steep incline. You weren't there to see me standing atop of a bluff after walking with a group of cachers in search of yet another temporary hide. You weren't there to see a group of people laughing at the "finder's tree" while waiting for the last person to discover the hidden treasure. (We don't just go and grab it. When walking w/ a group each person upon finding the cache keeps wandering around pretending they're still searching. Once they are a safe distance away they call the "finder's tree" and as others find it, they join the group. This way each person is allowed the chance to find the cache on their own. No one is handed a find just because they're there!) You weren't there to see the smiles on the faces of the cache hiders as we talked about their efforts. You weren't there beaming with pride at the thought of your cache being searched out by 100+ people in the course of a single day.

So, you climbed the highest mountain, found yourself in enemy terratory, attacked by a bear, snake bitten, fell off the cliff....

If you find a terracache or some non-gc.com cache, do you log it here because it was so tough to find? no...

Don't you think it's silly to log that someone has attended 100 events even though they only attended 3 events... or in your case Major Brat, you profile shows you have been to 100 events! Wow, your really into this stuff. but a quick check at all the 100 events only brings up 1 event?!!?

I'm going out caching and kayaking today, have a nice day!

    Dave

  11. If these WGA temp caches meet all the physical requirements for Geocaching.com caches, why weren't they approved, permanent caches?

I have attended five event caches in California, and none of them had temp caches. Most of these events had new caches hidden by locals, just in time for the event. The big difference is that these caches are still active and can be found by all geocachers.

I personally hid 10 caches for the last event held in my area, and I still maintain my 10.

From what I have read in previous messages, they made an agreement with the land management not to leave the caches behind.

  12. It's a game! ...but this is also an important discussion as you are always going to come across people who march to the beat of a different drum. This "sport" is also evolving and sometimes the people who march to a different beat of a drum can bring new variations to our sport.

When it comes to etiquette, i was taught that you don't log your own cache and you don't log a cache more than once. Logging an "attended" more than once would also go against that etiquette.

I could see logging the event once and making a list of the non-gc caches or even logging the event but then adding notes to say you found the non gc caches but to log that you attended 30 times... it makes no sense to me. I am surprised the organization didn't take a stand against logging an event more than once.

Again, we all march to the beat of a different drum.

    Dave

  13. ...If you come, you will see that the caches placed at a WGA event are of exceptional quality and would meet any cache placement guidelines for gc.com including being far enough apart from each other, and including a logbook. The quality of these caches is astounding - usually cleverly hidden and disguised micros. MUCH better than any magnetic key holder on the back of a road sign along a road...

it may follow the guidelines but the temp caches are not listed on GC.com. In fact, GC.com frowns on temp caches.

Why not just enter all the non-gc caches you find in one "attended" log? I don't know if any of you guys scrolled through the event but it looks like a mess.

    Dave

  14. It's been awhile since I've posted here as well... These forums seem to give nothing but headaches caused by the overall negativity and "rabbling"... but I digress.

The WGA has hosted events for nearly five years now. They have always allowed their temp caches to be logged by attendees. It has never been a requirement, only an option for those who wish to keep track of the number of finds they have. (Yes, it is about the numbers...) As Cathunter said, this has been a topic of heated discussion more than once.

The WGA holds no opinion one way or the other and allows each atendee to log their caches how they like. This is the right of the cache owner. I have done multi's where the owner has allowed the finder to log each stage as a find. How is this any different? I have done caches that have included an unlisted Bonus Cache that could be logged as well. How is this any different? Someone mentioned the LOTEC listings... How is this any different?

Having hidden several of the caches at this event, I can vouch for the fact that these caches were of equal or greater quality than any of the caches that are found outside of this event. It has been mentioned that they should not be logged because they are not specifically listed here. These caches meet every physical requirement of any other cache listed on this site. Jeremy has given us no way to recognize these event caches here, as is his right. He has however not forbidden us from recognizing them on the event page either. The question has been asked and answered that we are free to log our events however we would like, just as any else is. Until it is mandated by TPTB otherwise, we'll play the game our way, you play it yours.

I now return you to your regularily scheduled banter.

    - Jeff

    Team GeoPink

I started reading this with a "who cares" opinion but am coming out with the opinion that

an event should only be logged once.

caches that are not listed on this site should not be logged as a find

It doesn't matter the distance, how difficult or well thought out the caches were. if they are not listed here for everyone to log, they should not be listed as a find.

an event should only be logged once.

If a GC.com cache is found, it should be logged accordingly.

If the temp caches are so important, why not just write one long "attended" or "Found" log stating you found the other caches, why post 30+ logs? It just doesn't make sense unless your trying to pad your numbers.

The game does have rules, some of them go without saying, some are just common sense.

    Dave

  15. I think changing rules mid game is bullllss***.

72 hours is garbage and you know it Mark.  Quite frankly - you should grab and place it in the same day.

Unfortunately it looks like this one is going to get out of control real soon.

I'd say 48 hours should be max

How about after 36 hours you get 2 points instead of 3 for retrieving and dropping a flag. Then 1 point for every 12 hours after that. In other words, there should be incentive to drop it off quickly.

39 is good Gives you a day and a half

I'll agree with that. (with 39 hours, not that it's a day and a half) :(

    :D

I just want to find out how many quotes we could do before the GC Server Explodes?! :o:D

LOL... They'll probably close this thread before we get a chance to find out.

    Why would they do that?

It's the quote cavern of doom!! :o:unsure:

You guys are really immature!

Hey I thought you were on my team! :o

The both of you, stop it!

    This is getting me dizzy....

Wow! Cool diamond effect! Have we got the record yet?

Packanack wrecked the flow. Figures, leave it to someone from Jersey.

    Back on track! :o

Look deeply into the swirling vortex that is this thread :P

This is like one of those things where if you zoom out long enough it all starts over from the beginning. :o We just might have discovered the vortex of the universe here. :o

Does it surprise anyone that the vortex of the universe was hidden in a cache?

What the hell are you talking about?

I just finished eating and scrolled down the page really quick and I think I might throw-up. :o

    What was the question again?

Reminds me of those cascades on Usenet.

Wow, I am getting dizzy just scrolling down the screen.

Me too, but the important thing is to keep this topic related to the original topic. We have BOTH flags. :D

If we keep going will we squeeze the original message so tightly that it is just a string of individual letters?

Please stay on topic before they shut this thread down for gross silliness

You're right. NJ Sux. There, on topic.

Now, now... lets put credit where credit is due...

    NJ did NOT invent Levittown!!!

And let's not forget the first community built on sexual freedom, wife swapping, and Marxism...

The original Hippies, 150 years ago, in Modern Times... in what is today Brentwood...

Let's make this a cache, I'm thinking of a post, please tell me the author, date and time. FTF wins this swirling vortex of text....

  17. Reminds me of a wasp that was flying around in my house, that thing was huge. After my wife killed it, I was amazed at how tiny the wasp was...

    Here's to you guys....

  18. I'm 5 hours out of my Apicoectomy proceedure and feeling pretty good. I asked the doc if hiking would be out this weekend and he said I should be fine.

If I decided to go can I hitch a ride with someone from LI?

    Thanks,

    Dave

  19. Has the tide turned? Is it now acceptable (hip, even) to admit that it is? I need to know so I can craft future forum posts to allign myself with what the cool kids are doing.  :D

Hip people don't blast the Wiggles Greatest hits while heading out caching. Just a fine point. By the way snookems, you forgot to have your dictionary handy. ALIGN only has one L.

For me, its not about the numbers, its about the formula BMSquared=(Team Bam Bam) +1. See, not the number, but the formula. The smack talk it triggers is great.

Umm... I'm just not hip :(

If the Wiggles don't go in the car, if the DVD player isn't ready with "Hot Potato", then my son will not go with me. :D

Can we change the not hip part to Barney or something? :(

    Dave

  20. I'm just going by the numbers as it seems important to you guys. I figured you guys would want to know my 50th was "The Cache of the Dead Bum". I hope to have 100 by the end of July and 200 by my 1 year anniversary.

I know it's important to you guys... not me :-)

    Dave

  21. I would be very upset if a clerk accepted a signature that clearly wasn't the cardholders. What if I had found Avroairs card and signed webscouter to the signature. The cashier looks at it and says nice name and I walk out with dinner for two graciously paid for by Avroair.

BTW I also hate some stores new policy of not needing a signature for purchases under $25 on a credit card or not checking ID on checks.

I have one card that I have never signed. I'm always hoping someone asks me for ID but no one ever does. Maybe I will sign my card with "Check ID" to see if they will get the hint.

    Dave

  22. So, are you going or did you go yet? I've been wanting to bag this one too. I may be in if you go on Sunday afternoon.

    Zarah,

I went down to the preserve, inflated the boat and was off and rowing at around 1pm this afternoon. As I got to the island, I realized I left my gps in the Vanr B)

After walking towards the NE side of the island I found it right out in the open and rescued "Peck The Dead Chicken TB".

It took a total of 15-20 minutes (estimated) and it was a bit windy and the water was rougher than it was last weekend when I tested out my raft. I was hoping to get a few people to do this at the same time but there wasn't too much interest. I figured, what the heck and just did it anyway. It was for my 50th and I found all caches within 5 miles of my house. I'm hoping to do a few more today as I'm close to doing all caches within 6 miles of my house.

What do I do for my 100th cache? anyone?

    Dave
