Could someone please tell me what you would use an electronic compass for and if it is worth the extra $50.00? I love the compass in my VISTA. try looking inconspicous moving about looking at your cell phone I just stand hold it level then walk that direction. searously, I like being able to take a bearing while standing still. Do I need to specify a file type extension, and if so, what is it? yes, the extension should be ".pdb" "geocaching database" format If you don't see the format then you don't have the latest version, there was some confusion when I D/l'ed it too. 7. quote:Originally posted by mtnbike28:thanks for replying, I double posted this (see above, rookie error) and have started to get some of my answers. I couldn't get the Cetrus manual to open (still can't?) What software are you using and your thoughts? I am using my PDA/GPS for many things and look forward to seeking my first GeoCache this week-end. I started out with the Handspring visor (Plat & Prism) and Magellan GPS Companion, and had good luck finding caches with the software that came with the Magellan GPS Companion. I also used GPS Pilot to get (scanned) moving maps in the palm I got tired of typing the cache coords in the palm, and there were not alot of other software choices back then, so I bought a Garmin vista There are a lot more GPS/Palm software out there now. Best of all I see where GPSBabel will export data to a lot of the Palm/GPS programs, even the caching program I made for the palm. I have not tryed the Cetus program yet, so I can't help you there sorry More rules = Less fun!
  8. quote:Originally posted by Poindexter:There is extra circuitry inside the GPS in addition to the antenna jack. External antennas are active and require power to operate. I have considered building this Reradiating Antenna to use with my Vista, I even have the antenna for my Emap, but far to busy to run down the MCX connectors yet. More rules = Less fun!

  11. I have a Vista and a Emap, while the Vista is a great GPS I find I use the Emap more often in the car, on the trail, etc.. The bigger screen, audible alerts, antenna connections, upgradeable memory make it a great all around GPS. I wish all Garmins had at least the same features as emap. Found mine at a discount store for 99.00 and have sence shopped Ebay and found great prices and have: 2 (16 meg) cards Mapsource Metroguide External Antenna (WOW all sats locked) data/power cable (a must!) quote:Originally posted by rayt333:As a bonus if you get the power cable then you can turn the light on and it will stay on allowing you to see the screen without hitting the light everytime. Actually you can adjust light timer on garmin units to not turn off, but talk abought battery drain More rules = Less fun!
  12. quote:Originally posted by SearchRescueDog:Has anyone had any trouble using the etrex with Maptech software? I have garmins and maptech products no problems here if set properly quote:I can't get a link... The etrex is set to garmin output and maptech is set to etrex input... This MAY be the problem, I have not combined the two yet, but all non garmin software I have used needed "nema" output set on the GPS. More rules = Less fun!

  14. quote:Originally posted by Glorfindel:I use my PalmVx with Pocket Queries for displaying caches and http://vip.hyperusa.com/~dougs/geocachingdb/geocachingdb.htm for logging notes, took & left, etc. My big advice would be to get a good case! The Vx is pretty small and I have a slim line metal case which allows it to ride in my pocket, even with jeans. I am sure it would have been busted months ago. http://www.jcg.com/ftp/pda1.jpg http://www.jcg.com/ftp/pda2.jpg I too used to print out pages and pages of caches and have not looked back since using the palm. A PDA is the perfect device for the perfect Techno-Geek recreational activity! [This message was edited by Glorfindel on January 08, 2003 at 02:44 PM.] nice case!
