  1. I am not yet a premium member yet, howver that will change soon. I operate in a linux enviorment. I am curious to know if GPSBabel will work the same as GPXSpinner for my organizing program. I know Plucker does have a linux option already.
  2. welcome to geocaching, or what we call our addiction. $300 will get a new color gps which more than adequate for caching, hunting, fishing or driving. I highly recommend a visit to the Garmin or Magellan website. You might even consider this package. etrex legend $150 (target), Zire 22 $100 (most anywhere) Geocaching premium membership ($30).
  3. does anyone have linux firefox as their web browser? what is the best prgram to synch their computer to the pda? I do plan to become a premium member soon. huskerrich
  4. while you can buy stamps from most hobby stores. Most letterboxers like to see hand carved stamps (My daughter uses and exacto knife and eraser). You might be able to design a sig stamp and have it custom made at an office supply store.
  5. i learned about the new policy in a letterboxing forum carleen, you have referenced the correct governing body (McHenry Water Conservation District) . I referred to you because I know you are in the general vicinity and knew somewhat the policies that I am familiar with from Nebraska. I have since heard some of the restrictions. 1) must have permit good for a year issued from the Conservation District (no charge) 2) only three caches allowed in a given area 3) must be within 12' of the established trail system and not located in an enviormently sensitive area so far, sounds pretty good and fair to both the governing and to the geocaching and letterboxing communities.
  6. Just found out that the conservation district has new guidelines for geocaches, are they fairly typical carleenp or badly written
  7. the general of opinion of the group seems to be that if you click go to and you don't find the cache it is a dnf. I've changed my policy on dnf's over time. I will file a dnf if I had made an ample attempt to look for the cache without a find. If I can't get to ground zero or have to abort because of muggles It really isn't an attempt. huskerrich
  8. I wouldn't see any problem using your pda. Once I met someone who was geocaching with an open notebook computer and this was about a 500 yard hike into the woods.
  9. ok, I think I talked my wife into buying a pda for caching. instead of printing out each and every cache page. After reading the geo university description, I have some questions. 1) the programs to make this work are loaded on your desktop computer? or on the pda 2) how much memory is needed to hold 500 cache pages? 3) is it necessary to have a color pda?
  10. I use a etrex legend for geocaching, also I have gone out on the course and premarked the pin positions, remember there is no need to worry about most tee shots because you are only concerned about yardage when you are shooting for the green. Remember the pros get get thier accuracy because they are told each day how far from the front of the green the flag will be placed.
  11. We have one in Lincoln based on this principle also "Head straight for this one. combination is basically in the title.
  12. cache reviewers are part time and not paid. If you geocache on sat., they prob do to. Have patience, and your cache will be approved in no time.
  13. 1) first step would be to work with the guy you confronted. . 2) next step would be to go to a park's supervisor. 3) last and final step would be the village council for a city wide policy. problem here is that they would probaly go with the park's stand. So 2=3 anyway
  14. i couldn't find any info from www.unbelievable.pt/ however the first link, that you gave was a 475 euro unit Garmin 60cx, I believe. If you really want to shell out that much money, go for it, that's a great unit, but not necessary for geocaching, (refer to gps units forum and Great britian forum). That said, the first website has all the units available in the states, so any recommendations that ordinarily would be made are valid, For a starter unit, I reccomend the etrex legend,
  15. there is also a cache within a mile of those coords, called the Blair Witch-coffin point
  16. What would most amateurs choose? Team can't split up, Gps'rs and Letterbox clues are in opposite directions. Distance for both treks are the same. One you have to interpret clue on the way, but you would know where the box is on arrival. The other would provide you a direct route, but then you have a hunt at the end.
  17. i just happened to remember something on this tb, but send it to nebraska also
  18. i think there was a reference to this tb in a previous thread
  19. assuming the veterans can't go back to caches they have found, you have a good advantage, use it. choose a park trail with lots of caches(google earth), grab a bike, a chache your heart out. go after traditionals, if you kill more than twenty minutes at a cache, continue on. Assuming you can put bikes on buses, take advantage of that, have fun, that's the purpose of this competitin. Good luck
  20. you might check, I think you can buy fortune cookie without going to the restaurant if chinese isn't your coup of tea
  21. three alternate sites. I went to the alternate sites and entered Portland, OR a geocaching and letterboxing hotbed, there appears to be maxium of two caches that aren't listed on geocaching.com. talk about a monopoly.
  22. I think that would be a great idea, but would probaly have to yield to preferences of the two parties involved. I know alot of letterboxers that prefer not to log online the status of the box. However as others have said, "Education & communication". My daughters plant letterboxes and they intend for you to follow the clues to find the box or it isn't a find.
  23. welcome to our addiction bob. yes this is one of the kind of hides you will need to get used to. The first thing I noticed was that you put too much trust in your gps'r. The cache could be as far away as 40' depending on your probabiliy of error. Start looking for likely place when you get to within 50'. You chose a cache that had a difficulty of 2, from the cache description I honestly couldn't tell you what you are looking for but it is at least larger than a pill container. For your first caching experience try (gcnqtj, gcyjxp, gcjax7,gcq1ac) a good first time micro might be (gctpza)
  24. actually, letterboxers are being told in thier forums about geocaching and how to check proximity, google earth only makes things easier. Let's use the case above where the letterbox was there, the cache owner finds out about it and leaves the cache where it is anyway. or even worse sabatoging the letterbox
