  1. I like the 1-GB I am using. I loaded it up with the Topo 3D and DirectRoute regions that I travel to most frequently. I can switch between the routing capabilities of DR when traveling in the truck and switch to the T3D regions when I get near the cache location to give a better off-road view of the location. I have just about all of the southeast states by region in both T3D and DR loaded. I still have plenty of room for caches divided by the 200 limit set-up by town and area that I travel to while caching. Cheers Muddler
  2. In the first set you have Decimal degrees and the second Decimal minutes. You are correct that there needs to be a conversion. I use one called GeoCalc. Geocalc Cheers Muddler
  3. This is great for rainy weather!! Cheers! Muddler
  4. Bob&Bears: I do not use a Mac, but maybe you can glean some useful information from my small bit of Ex500 knowledge. I take the GPX files and load them into the geocaching manager (comes with the Ex500 CD), which is obviously a Windoz program but the here is the drill. After loading the GPX file into GM it can be used to convert/xfer the data in the GPX to a file used by the Ex500. What you will need to do is get the GPX data converted in your MAC from the GPX format to a format the Ex500 can use then xfer the data. There are others here that can offer recommendations on the Programs for the Mac. If you have something that can do the data conversion you can xfer the data to the GPS via a file copy to the internal memory or an SD card in a reader. I use a 1-GB card and store a bunch of regions where I travel for both Direct Route and Topo 3D. Hang in there some some will be along who can offer more detailed info on getting you where you need to be. Cheers Muddler
  5. In Alabama, The County Tax Assessor always knows who owns the land. I would be willing to bet there is a similar government office where you are needing the information. Ask any Real Estate Agent in the area they could direct you to the nearest government office that can get the information for you. In Alabama they have County maps showing every tract and parcel and can tell you who pays the Taxes. The payer of taxes is usually the owner. They will have the last known address to contact the owner. Cheers Muddler
  6. Clyde: I would like to export to my palm and remove the quote (") markes from the cache name. Having the quote markes at the start of the name throws them out of sequesce. I know that I can use CMConvert to do this but is there a way to do it directly from GSAK when I export to the palm file? I have not found a way to dothis. If this has been posted please give some ideas on where to locate the information. I searched for the word "qoute" but did not find anything that pertained to removing the Quote Marks. Cheers Muddler

    Reviewer Note

It is there for the cache owner to give the reviewer additional information about the cache that may need t be considered for approval of the cache. Or to just beg for approval, or to tell the approver how great he/she is in the hope that it will get your cache approved faster. Cheers Muddler
  8. If you need to test indoors goto the "simulate" mood on the GPS. The GPS will then put out Data. Set the GPS to the NEMA setting and your laptop should get adequate input to plot the simulated course on the laptop. Cheers Muddler
  9. You can load all of the map files to disk when you load the program just select Complete as pointed out previously. There is also a fix for the program asking for the CD each time you start the program. The fix requires using a HEX editor and changing the code of the Mapsend DirectRoute or Topo 3D exicutable file. Cheers Muddler
  10. I found a hard case in a sporting goods store that was for a pair of wrap-around glasses that workes great. It even has room for the USB cable. Cheers Muddler
  11. Embra: I have an x500 and DR. We'll look into this tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out. Cheers Muddler
  12. I really like mine. I got the screen protector to save on the scratches, and I got both Topo 3D and Directroute. They both work well and make getting there a lot easier when you are not familier with the area. I hope you enjoy the unit. There alot of folks here that have gone through most of the painfull processes so if you need help do not hesitate to ask. Getting GSAK to work sounds like you are on your way to getting things loaded and ready to go out and make some finds. Good Luck! Cheers Muddler
  13. Sounds like this is getting off on a tangent. Its just and article an I thaought it shed a good light on our sport. I guess I'll close it before we find out how soon all the fun will come to and end. Cheers Muddler
  14. News article! Nice article! Cheers Muddler
  15. This looks like it would be a lot better then the LAND screen. If you use your GPS at night and use routing the screen gets bright at every turn. This would probably tone down the intensity of the light. I'll be giving it a try on my nest trip. Thanks for the Idea!! Cheers Muddler
  16. This is the first OEM replacement batteries (other then Magellan) I have seen for the Explorist series. They sell for $24.95 with shipping. Pc-Mobile These are the 3.7v-1300mAh, like the one that ships with the GPS. I've seen the Cell phone batteries but they are only 1100mAh. Cheers Muddler
  17. Giving us an idea where you are located would help a little! Cheers Muddler
  18. Are you looking at Topo 3D or Direct Route? T3D can be had for around $50-$75 and DR can be had for around $99. Don't know how much you know but here goes. As far as I know only Mapsend products will work for the Explorist. The T3D shows some POIs and has contours and most roads that DR has but can not do the routing. DR has less roads (does not show a lot of the secondary roads (dirt roads and trails) that T3D has. However, DR has tons of POIs and will allow you to get turn by turn directions on you GPS for navigating between locations. I use both and like what both for what they have to offer. I will use DR to get me to a location and T3D to do the off Road stuff once I leave the pavement. I just load all the areas I need to an SD card before I leave the house for a trip. Hope this helps let me know if you have any specific questions. I am not an expert by any stretch of imagination but I have used both Progs on several trips and several cache hunting expeditions. Hints!

As time goes on, the group I usually go with tends to wait to read the hint. Sure there are other caches to find, but I I like the whole adventure for each cache. Selecting the cache to find, reading the information about the cache, traveling to the cache location and the hunt. I like the feeling that I get of finding the cache with no help. My group has two unwritten rules, no reading of the Hint until we have made a good effort to find the hide, and the first to find the cache moves away from the cache before declaring "I Found It". This usually results in Maximum enjoyment for everyone in the group. In most every case where we use the hint we realize if we had searched just a little longer we would have found the cache anyway.
  20. I did not check the T3D but I had a lot of roads on the DR maps. I was able to route between them. I don't know what you mean by Local roads Peurto Rico is pretty small 110 miles (aprox). The roads seem to be secondary and primary roads not intercity streets, but you can get from one side of the island to the other. I bought the copy about 3- months ago and the version # is 2.00f build 1087. Cheers Muddler
