  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of Firefox and greasemonkey. My own top two greasemonkey scripts are :-

The Map Substituter - which replaces the Google map an the cache page (the bottom one just above the logs) with a proper 50,000 OS map.

The Forum Tools and particularly the Ignore Thread tool. Hides any thread you are not interested in and makes the forum much easier to follow.

  2. Hi All

Not been in the forum for many months, but couldn't help but notice this topic. Was in Miami today and had no problems, but then Satellite 15 doesn't appear to be serving this part of the world. I had 07, 08, 11, 17, 19, 28, 48... B)

Back to Nevada tomorrow, perhaps I'll notice it then :)

Galaxy 15 is the satellite name which is not the reference number you see on your satellite screen. As it is a WAAS satellite the number you see on the screen will be above 32 as this is where all the EGNOS/WAAS satellites are numbered

  3. Great 1000 Pocket queries. Unfortunately they are completely useless as you have to go and manually download them and transfer to GSAK. What a wasted effort. Having combined all my multipart queries into 1000 bites instead of 500, I now have to change them all back into 500's for them to be any use.

2 bricks short of a full load

  4. REally? I thought everyone used this.

Funny enough, the best one we did was to do an A road trip from MK to South Devon using no motorways and caching all along the way. Took about 10 hours, but so relaxing.....

I've used caches along a route for several years but when they first started out G'speak advised the method of generating a route was to use GE, which is pretty pathetic as a route planner. Arc builder then appeared and I have used it ever since. I didn't know that GS had produced their own tool for generating routes, which is presumably why ARC builder has now died.

  5. I went to prepare some routes for gererating PQ's this evening and it seems that ARC builder has gone. Does anyone know of an alternative for generating KML routes. I know Google earth will do it but I don't like it as you cant drag the route to make it go the way you want to. Any other suggestions.

  6. Not sure if it's happening to any one else. When I sign into geocaching.com and my profile page I stay logged in for a few minutes then I get logged out and have to log in again. I know I'm not logging out so is GC.com doing it. I have ticked the box to say remember me.

Can any one help please ??

What browser are you using? If you are using Firefox and one of the cookie files gets corrupted it logs you out each time you leave the site even with the remember me box ticked. I've not heard of it logging you out without leaving the site though. The cure is to delete the file cookies.sqlite in your profile.

  7. A letterbox cache is treated exactly as a normal cache. Stamp the log, sign the log, use a sticker or whatever. For letterboxers the cache contains a stamp (which is not a swap item) for them to stamp their own log books. There was a thread on here only a couple of days ago where Deci said there was no requirement to have a stamp as that would constitute an 'Additional Logging Requirement' which are no longer allowed.

As an extra note. Take disposable gloves as all the letterbox hybrids that I have found have contained a stamp pad (for the stamp) which had run amock and covered everything inside the cache in ink (usually it seems to be red)

  8. sounds like its a corrupt file (mouldy cookie!!) as it's only on this site.

try clearing those geocaching/Groundspeak forums cookies (tools/options/privacy/remore indvidual cookies) and then try again?

Failing that deleting the cookies file itself might work :

follow this and delete the cookies.sqlite file (with FF closed).

Note, you'll of course lose all cookies that way.

let us know how you get on!

I had this problem on Firefox /Win2k a few months ago and deleting cookies.sql fixed it

  9. Hi. This is a new thing for me. Having bought a GPS at Christmas for walking, I found about Geocaching on the internet.

Not really started yet, but one thing I have found is:-

On the page giving instructions and co-ords, the OS grids co-ords are different on the page compared to those that are downloaded to my GPS.

Ie. SK12345 54321 are on the page, but on the GPS it says SK12365 32445.

Which one is right and why different anyway.

Others may come up with other ideas but as a first guess, it is probably due to incorrect datums. All geocaching coords are on WGS 84 datum and OS grid refs are on (Not surprisingly) OSGB. This can lead to errors of a few hundred meters. Add to that the errors inherrent in converting from Lat/Long to a rectangular grid and your answer could well be there. To solve it use Lat/Long WGS84 and you will find it will all work.

  10.

You'll find that when you're caching that your GPS will rarely take you to 0 feet and hey presto the cache is at your feet....

It's only happened to me once and the cache was directly below my feet - about 50ft below under a high bridge. When I got down there the GPS had changed its mind by 30 ft or so, probably as a result of the metal bridge above.

  11. Patience please!

Now, I've placed a cache and as I was driving home, pondering submitting it for approval, I suddenly realised I hadn't checked how far it was between my cache and another nearby.

I have the co-ordinates of both, obviously. So how can I check?

I could drive back and measure it, but I'd rather not!

If you have your new one and all surrounding caches in GSAK, set your new one as the centerpoint and that will do it for all surrounding caches. Apart from puzzles and multis which the reviewer will check when you submit yours.

  12. Hi Thnx for the help, i have downloaded gsak but when it tries to connect it just keeps coming up no device found, i think its just that old it dont recognise it, i think i need a new modern one so if anyone has got any good ideas please let me know, the main use will be for geocaching,Cheers

From previous posts it sounds as though you are using a USB to serial converter. This creates a virtual com port on your computer so make sure you set GSAK to the correct COM port, which from the sound of it, from earlier posts, will probably be the only serial port on the list. If the serial port is not showing, the USB to serial converter hasn't been installed correctly.
