  1. I've had the same problem when I type in an address. No matter what address I put in there I get an error message that says the address can't be found. Glad you're working on it.
  2. I like the challenge of the search. Caching has also turned me into more of a hiker. When my family goes camping, I come armed with a GPS full of caches to search for. I've never been into hiking just for the sake of walking through the woods but I've seen and visited so many wonderful places during the course of caching that now I look for campgrounds with lots of hiking and biking trails. Caching has also taken me off-roading to some beautiful seldom-visited spots in our National Forest system. I am also fascinated by the creativity and cleverness of the caches that I have found.
  3. I asked a friend of mine from church about handheld GPS one Sunday and he mentioned Geocaching. That evening after church he invited me to his house to search for a cache that is located on a city walking/biking trail nearby. He explained that for the price of a decent handheld, I can take my family on some really cool adventures to places one might never think of going. I bought a Garmin eTrex Legend off CL for $40 from a college student and the rest is history. I have introduced several friends, family members, and co-workers to the sport since then.
  4. UPDATE After a couple of phone calls to Garmin, it appears there may have been a couple of problems. First they blamed EasyGPS as being sometimes finicky and incompatable due to being a third party software package(?). So I installed the Garmin BaseCamp software which is very nice by the way. I used 7Zip to unzip my pocket Query from Geocaching.com, imported it to BaseCamp and sent it to the GPSMAP 60. No problem, right? Well, I pressed Find, Geocache, and the display said "none found" so now I was again disappointed. I called Garmin back and explained it to the support staff and he said to do a search "By Name" and they should show up, which they did!! Apparently, when you do a Find, Geocache, the unit only searches in about a 50 mile radius of the current location. When you search "By Name" it pulls everything up, so the bottom line is all is well. Thanks to everyone for you suggestions!!
  5. When I hook up to my computer, I'll get the tone and on the GPS there is a squiggly line with an arrow on each end that shows up on the display which indicates that it is connected via USB. I talked to one of my buddies at work who has the GPSMAP 60c (color display) and he suggested deleting and reloading the driver on the PC from the CD that came with it or from the Garmin website. My computer is used by my kids and who knows what sort of crap they are downloading and stuff on there. Thanks for all your suggestions and replies. If I get this figured out, I'll post whatever the fix is.
  6. I just took the unit out of the case and apparrently it has been on all night long. I thought it used to automatically power down after a few minutes. The only options on the interface page are Garmin, Garmin DGPS, NMEA in/NMEA out, Text out, RTCM in, RTCM in/NMEA out, RTCM in/Text out, and None.
  7. My gpsmap 60 (Garmin) won't go online with my PC. Normally you'll hear the "dedoop" sound and if you go to My Computer you'll see the devices with removeable storage show the GPS. Well I tried the cable that came with my Nuvi and it still wouldn't show up. The cable for my handheld works with the Nuvi, so that rules out the handheld's cable as the problem. I checked the interface setting on the setup menu and it was ok. I fear that the GPSMAP 60 is a goner. Any ideas?
  8. Fels Naptha soap and hot water ASAP after exposure. Bailly's logger supply has a variety of products for poison ivy/oak but I have no personal experience using them. I have ordered chain saw parts from Bailly's and they treated me well.
  9. We found a 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it thinking it was the cache but learned that it was someones way of disposing of a dead skunk...yuck!
  10. You are correct. I had planned to go out and hide some temporary caches that would be used only by my family members for the organized game, then collect them when we are finished. I live too far from the park to install anything permanent. Thanks for the tip with the insert key!
  11. I would like to involve my siblings and their families on a geochaching type game at our family campout in July and need some ideas that would be suitable for ages 10-85. We will be staying at Tawas Point State Park in Michigan so we have the entire park to work with as well at the Huron National Forest not too far away. I did some searching esterday and came up with a couple that might work. I'd like something that would be played with maybe 4 teams of 4-5 people. We have 2 real GPSr's and a couple of Iphone-Android type devices available to use. Here is an off topic question, How do you turn off the overwrite condition on here? I wanted to change something in the above paragraph and when I tried, my new text was overwriting the old...not good. I'd like it to simply insert the new text and move the existing text down the line.
  12. Another Christian Cacher in Kalamazoo. I know of at least 3 others from my church.
  13. I know this is probably beating a dead horse......but am I pretty much locked in to buying the discontinued City Navigator DVD from Garmin (or another retailer)? Are there other off-brand makers of quality maps? This is sort of like the question of Do I have to buy Honda motor oil or can I buy Castrol, etc? I found some websites that you can download maps from but I think the maps were ones that people posted on the site and from what I understand, they may have viruses. Also, I understand that you can only unlock the DVD to one GPS device so you have to buy another DVD or unlock code for a second device. This means previously enjoyed DVDs are useless if sold on the used market even if the unlock code is supplied. Be gentle as I am pretty new to the whole thing.
  14. I was using a Garmin GPSMAP 60 at the same cache location under similar weather conditions.....broken clouds and some trees. Is there some icon or other indication on the satellite page that denotes when WAAS is being used or is that simply a given when I activated it from the setup menu? Recently I found out the "D" in the signal strength bars stood for Differential GPS which according to my manual, are signals coming from stations near major waterways, etc. I'm 35+ miles from Lake Michigan and don't even know if there is anything like that around here.
  15. The other day, I found a cache less than a mile from my house, and my unit was right on the money. Today I wanted to show my GPSr's abilities to my brother in law and the thing took me 40' in the wrong direction. His Droid phone got us right on the spot. What's up with that?? After that disappointing excursion, I marked a waypoint in my driveway and then walked about 200' away and used the Go To function to try to relocate the spot. Once again it had me going every which way but the right way. I walked back and stood exactly at the original point and my coordinates from the satellite page did not match the numbers that I originally marked. Am I expecting too much? Does having the WAAS function enabled help or hinder me? Am I missing something here?? For Pete's sake, I've read the manual from cover to cover 2 or 3 times. If this is the kind of repeatability I'm going to get then I'm never going to find anything. I'm about ready to toss this thing in the lake.
  16. That explains it. Thanks for the information!
  17. I have 2 Garmin GPSr's an Etrex Legend and a Gpsmap 60. Occasionally on the satellite page where the signal strength bars are shown there will be a D at the bottom end of the bars. What is this and what does it mean? I looked in my manuals and couldn't find anything related to this.
  18. Thanks for the explanation!!
  19. Hi Everyone! As you can see, I'm new to the forum and geocaching in general. So here is the issue. When I log into the geocaching.com home page and go to the forum, I have to log in again in order to use the forum. Seems to me that one login should be sufficient to use all the features of the site. At least all the features that the cheapskate basic membership allows. I'll probably upgrade the membership in the near future and I hope that the speed and user-friendliness improves with the cash ($) outlay. I've been browsing the cache listing for my vicinity and it looks like there are some fun ones to look for. Unfortunately the weather has been very uncooperative recently...more suited to indoor tasks.
