  1. You can use an application called "MapsetToolKit" to remove the map that is causing the conflict and then your other maps will load. Personally, I've found once you have a bad installation it's best to uninstall all my map applications and go into the windows registry (regedit.exe) and delete the Garmin references listed under LOCAL_MACHINE and CURRENT USER (both listed under software) and start over reloading all my map applications. In my experience, Mapsource does not re-install well over and existing installation even if I have used Windows "Program Uninstall" to uninstall the application without manually deleting the references in the Registry. Link to the MapsetToolKit is here, if you just want to get Mapsource running again with the maps that DID install correctly: http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/ BTW - Mapsource maps have always proven to be hardest applications to install of any of my software.
  2. I found a work-around... I copied only the Mapsource.exe to a directory C:\Garmin leaving all the other files in the program files directory and it seems to be working okay without the permissions pop-up firing on start up. Mark
  3. I installed Mapsource in the \Program Files directory instead of the default location C:\Garmin. I'm using Windows Vista. Each time I start the program it will display a message "A program needs your permission to continue" I've tried setting the executable to "Run as Administrator", but I still get the prompt. Has anyone figured out a way to avoid the prompt. (Note I do not want to shut off User Account Control) A seemingly simple solution would be to reinstall the program in the default location, but I've found Mapsource does not install very easily unless it's a clean install. Seems like trace registry entries left over after the uninstall continue to haunt the reinstallation. Mark
  4. > Check Menu-> Setup -> Heading make sure the "Switch to compass heading when below:" is set to about 10 MPH minimum. If it is much lower, the GPS position "jumping around" will have the needle reading in "relation to travel" mode versus compass mode . You want to be in compass mode if your navigating by foot or standing still. Once you are under 10MPH you should switch to compass mode and the needle should point at you navigation reference.
  5. I often upload custom maps to Mapsource and then upload these maps to my 60CSx. You need these three programs (#2 AND #3 can be found on the WEB) 1) Mapsource 2) GPSMapEdit 3) MapSetToolKit Here's an overview of the process... 1) Save you Mapsource file in GPX format 2) Open GPX file with GPSMapEdit and convert tracks to polylines, identify other objects (lakes, park boundaries etc.) and then export file as a Garmin IMG file 3) Install the IMG file in Mapsource using the MapSetToolKit 4) Upload the custom map to your GPS I just realized the original question was an old post that got started up again... However, someone else may have the same questions.
  6. Thanks to topics posted in this forum, I now able to create custom Mapsource compatible maps and load them to Mapsource and my GPS. The maps are transparent so any images in the custom maps are overlaid onto the default maps. Here's a couple examples of a bike trails I've rode in the past several days: http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/Custom.jpg http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/Gibbs.jpg From the image you can see I've selected my own mapset "Custom Maps" in Mapsource. The maps were created using 3 zoom levels, from a distance the lake becomes visible, than the park boundary and finally the trails. The information for creating maps came from this forum from this link... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...c=169270&hl I create my maps using a slightly different technique than the video uses. 1) I upload my tracks from my GPS to Mapsource 2) I save the file as a *.gpx file format instead of *.gdb (default) * 3) I open the file with GPSMapEdit and covert the tracks to polylines or polygons. 4) I export the file as a *.img file ** 5) I use MapSetToolKit to load and register the new map to Mapsource. *I also use a application named ExpertGPS to add detail to the maps. ** Note: if you watch the video bump the RGN level up to 500 in lieu of 127 or cGPSMapper will complain... All the needed software is free (or shareware for more enhanced versions)
  7. October 14, 2006 - Using a Glisson External antenna, picking up WAAS 51 indoors (solarium) on a foggy morning (Seattle WA.) This is the first WAAS I've locked onto, and the highest accuracy. Also, this is an oddity of a 60CS receiver, the faceplate has 60C on it, however it's actually a 60CS model. http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/WAAS.jpg
  8. I believe the Mapsource software comes with two installation discs PLUS a startup disc. The startup disc was in a cardboard jacket, the two application disc were in a jewel (plastic) CD case. Did you store the startup disc somewhere else... This topic has been addressed before and people have swore they didn't have a startup disc, and then recant after they find it. Setup disck looks like this: (I had to use this to install City Select V7.0) http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/CD.jpg
  9. This version adds some badly needed track editing features to it under <Tools> Draw Erase Join Divide Also the ability to change the colors of individual tracks, and it SENDS the colored tracks to my Garmin 60 CS Much happier with the the software now that it has more robust track editing features.
  10. Are you sure about that? I had the Garmin 60CS for almost two years (sold two months ago), and I never got accuracy better then 12-14 feet. I think you confusing between feet and meters... Batnun I've had my 60C's E.P.E. down to 6 FEET (2 meters) on numerous occasions. It happens when I have a lock on lots of sats, getting WAAS corrections on them and have had the lock for about 15 minutes or so. I'm with Neo_Geo 100% on this! I've had my 60C's E.P.E. down to 6 FEET (2 meters) on numerous occasions as well. As a matter of fact, I've had my 60C since Feb '04 and routinely get a 6 foot EPE when I have a WAAS sv35 lock in upstate NY. This is under ideal clear horizon conditions I admit, but it is a common occurance for me. Here's a typical sample photo of my Map 60C in action. On top the Albany Medical Center - right?
  11. Pasha, Can you locate: "Setup.exe" on Disk #1. What happens when you run (double-click) it? There are some instructions in the setup guide for installing the software without a setup CD. I'm not sure if it's applicable to this software, however Nomade's response seems to indicate it may be. Mark
  12. I checked my City Select Software V6. It had two data disks in the CD case and a loose setup disk (Version 3.0 City Select Setup). It was included in the City Select software box in the pocket of the setup guide. I also believe it is needed to installed version 6.0 of Mapsource. The software will initially prompt you for the setup disk. I would contact the buyer and tell him the software should have come with a setup disk and would he check to see if he can locate it. (I've included a picture of what it looks like below). This will probably solve your problem, unfortunately you may have to wait a few days to use your software. A picture of the software setup disc is pictured here: http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/CD.jpg Mark
  13. A new release of ExpertGPS (V2.0) is available at http://www.expertgps.com/latest.asp I have both City Select 7, and Mapsource Topo, however I tend to use ExpertGPS the most often. It has some pretty good features including, allowing you to scan and use your own maps, draw you own maps, and also allows viewing the satellite or topographical images. It also has about 3K waypoints listed for each state that can be downloaded individually. Certainly worth the $50 for the full version IMHO. Mark
  14. First thanks everyone for the support, I was able to gleam enough from the suggestions to get the MapSource City Select V7 update to install on my computer. This is a new computer (April 05) running Windows XP with SP-2. Each time I tried to install Version 7 it loaded all the files but gave the InstallShield error message 1628 " Failed to complete installation" as it tried to write to the registry. BTW - It would blow up Version 6 too make it or any other version of MapSource in-operable. I'd click on the ICON and the error message would inform me there was something wrong with the Garmin Registry and to install the software again... I did just that (probably 10 times). The only software I could get to successfully reload was the Topo version. However it may not be a problem with this software and more likely a problem with my machine. Here's how I got V.7 to install. I used my Wife's laptop running the same OS and installed both version 6 and version 7 without unlocking the maps. I then went into the her registry and exported the to Garmin tabs. One is in Current User, the other is in Local Machine. I then placed these on my desktop and double-clicked them and MapSource fired right up. I then unlocked both maps and am back in business... V.7... I checked a few of my local roads that had been incorrectly mapped in V6 and they had been fixed in V7. I'll post a review after I've had time to use it.
  15. I received my v.7 Mapsource update and went through the installation process including paying them $75 for the unlock code. However after the program goes through the installation procedure I get this error message from InstallShield: InstallShield 1628 : Failed to complete installation I then click on the MS shortcut and get the following Mapsource Error: There is a problem with the MapSource registry Please re-install MapSource and start it again. (After several attempts I realize trying to reinstall the program multiple times is not going to "fix" the problem... ) I believe this originates back to a conflict with the Windows Installer Program... Anybody got any (constructive) ideas???? BTW I running XP, with service pack 2. I have my virus software and firewall disabled for the install... thanx...
  16. I ordered the version 7 update on-line today. From what I can tell, Garmin mails the update disk and then during the software install process the cost of the upgrade is determined (free or $75). I believe this is done by examining your previous unlock code. I have a few local road problems too, with version 6. I'll post whether these were corrected in v7, and if I feel the upgrade is worth the $75 asking price.
  17. By default the unit will switch to compass mode when navigating if you're speed drops below X amount of miles per hour (I had mine set for 1 MPH). When Mt Biking, I have mine switched on in the webbing of the pack and sometimes need to pull it out to point to a waypoint (sometimes where I parked my vehicle). Today, once again I headed off in the wrong direction. I think I've figured this out... The unit will switch from navigation mode (pointer accurately points to waypoint) to compass mode if I stood still or 60 seconds elapsed and the unit is not detecting motion. I was looking at the triangle on the map today and noticed it would not rotate as I spun in circles, however once I started walking it would "wake up" and point to direction I was heading. I'm assuming this is the unit going from compass mode to navigation mode. Bottom line, how can I get the unit NOT to go to compass mode. I set the default option in set up to < 0 MPH to go to switch to compass mode, instead of 1 MPH hoping this might keep it from switching... There is an option to turn the compass off, but this seems to affect the ability for the unit to navigate too, so I don't believe that's an option. Does anyone have a solution to being in a static location (standing motionless) and getting the compass pointer to accurately point at the next waypoint.
  18. It's not working right if it will crash with a country as a filter... Mine is crashing too, however I'm glad you pointed out removing the country field was a temp "fix" to this problem...
  19. My 60CS came with a 60C panel on it... The unit was definitely a 60 CS with a barometer and compass and it booted with 60 CS software...
  20. I like the ability to avoid either roads or areas entirely in auto-routing... Also, I can now "find" a street without needing a valid address (i.e., Main Street as opposed to 1001 Main Street) Much improved....
  21. ExpertGPS software is getting better, it's in beta 1.9b5 right. now. Nice improvement over 1.37 It has pretty good drawing capability now. Here is an example (best viewed at full size) http://webpages.charter.net/markh12001/MyPhotos/GM.jpg On this map I used a satellite view to trace around nearby lakes, some topo views to locate streams and a local trail mapped scanned and calibrated to draw the park boundaries.
  22. ExpertGPS is has some beta builds of their future 2.0 version of the software. They will allow you to download 1.9b3 for "testing" I'm having no luck with it. It will only save in the GPX file format and will NEVER reopen any of the files it has created without crashing. I also have 1.37 installed which is the current released version. I'm wondering if entries in the registry or some other file is causing a conflict. Has anyone got this beta version to run stable on their platform?
  23. I'd recommend a secondary attachment of the lanyard to some part of your pack. I do this when mountain biking and leave the unit about half way out of the webbing knowing even if I shake it loose, the lanyard will keep it from hitting the ground.
  24. I've had similar problems when I forgot to check the "include auto-routing data" on the bottom of mapsource. The unit will then try to auto-route using the basemap and that doesn't work.
