Thanks for the correction! I had no idea there were 2 WAAS satelites! How cool! I hope one of those repeater stations can broadcast to most of Oregon, that would be cool! I'll have to try it out again. I haven't used it in a while.
  2. I like the logs that tell stories. They're fun ...but most of mine are short... and end with TFTH...I had no idea that was somewhat of a not nice thing to say...I've really enjoyed hunting for the 1/1's ...and all of the ones we've found I'll try and not say TFTH from now on. Maybe I'll say something like "WAFC!" WAFC = What A Fun Cache!
  3. I always like to see new avatars. I don't have one yet...but maybe someday And, then I probably won't change it ...unless it has a theme to it. Oh! I just noticed that I'm the first to post on this thread with NO Avatar at all!!!
  4. WOW!!! Amazing! I bookmarked it to look at later! I can't stay up all night and read those pages, but I'd love to...amazing suff, and good pix too!!!
  5. Here's a tale of Horseflys being a part of the situation. If you haven't read the story yet...well...it's sad...and funny both. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=100611
  6. You might want to try this thread just a couple away from your post here. It has some good information in it posted by others to help those of us who are new to this stuff. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=100820 I hope it helps. Oh, and here's the Frequently Asked Questions, ( FAQ ), link Mama Marauder said: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=8749 Hmm...I'll have to go back and check it out myself. There's some things I didn't know!
  7. Wow, congratulations on your first find! I hope your wife's hand gets better soon. Yes, it is easier if you punch in the coordinates before you go out to find the cache. That way, you can use the "GoTo" feature, and the little arrow can point the general direction of where you're going It's a little easier than watching the numbers get smaller until they match...less driving around we've found. We also look for caches in areas we already know, that way, it decreases the drive time even less. I hope you 2 find many more together! Keep reading the forums about how to find caches, and how GPSr's work, and you'll learn lots!
  8. Ya know, I just read this sad story to my mom. She had the same opinion as your wife, and laughed for about 5 minutes straight! I'm sorry it worked out that way for you. I went with my mom, and a couple of friends to find a cache this last weekend. My friend had a GPSr, and I had mine. We followed his for a while, and when the going looked really rough...I checked mine...mine found it. Why?...it was the map datum...not the boomerang. And, yes, he has a Magellan, and I have a Garmin. Once he set the datum right...he was right on top of it, just like we were I'm glad our story only had wild roses, 70 degrees with sun, and some poison oak. ...not bad at all

    Hello

Make sure you can actually pick up the WAAS satelite where you live. Where I live in Oregon, I've never been able to pick it up. It could be that there are too many trees where I live, or the hills are always in the way, no matter where I am...I don't know...but I have a feeling that I may be a tad bit north to find the satelite unless I'm way out in the flat...or on top of a tall hill, or mountain. So, I've never used WAAS to find any geocaches, and have come within a few feet regardless on occasion. We're usually within 20 feet on average...even under heavy tree cover. I hope you find lots of caches
  11. The "stone's throw away" kinda thing is what you can do with letterboxing! That is fun! Question about the dowsing rods...wouldn't underground streams, water lines, phone lines, sewer lines, etc. get in the way sometimes? Also, how can you use dowsing rods to find something square???...like an ammo box...or tupperware...??? I can understand how you can use them to find things like sewer pipes, phone lines, water underground, etc....but geocaches??? How does that work? Wouldn't the magnetic field of the cache be harder to pick up at a distance since it is so small...and not in a line? I'd like to know more, those of you who've posted about dowsing. And the sextant thing???....I think it was Thomason who did most of the surveying for a large part of Canada. His work was astounding!...and is still very reliable today. His old maps are off by very little from what I've read about his work. Anyway, what a cool idea! And, yes, let us know how it goes with the sextant to find geocaches
  12. Hmmm...that sounds like a court house micro...in reference to lawyers: "Forum Vulture Cache" ...Be sure to wave at the security guards

That's kinda what I thought too, but thought I'd make a post to see if there was stuff others thought too. Thanks Cotati.

I saw an iFinder Go advertised for 80$. I've read on the forums that those who have iFinders think they're pretty good. Do they really have maps on them?...or is it just the basic base map like all the others with base maps?...and are their maps cheaper than Garmin/Magellen ones? The ad said 32 megs. That's quite a bit of memory.
  16. I've seen Otter Boxes suggested in the past. They have them at REI, and are a bit spendy...but I bet they work great!
  17. Just garter snakes so far.
  18. Found The Cache Took Nothing Left Nothing But Traded Tiny Ittybitty Slug Because Danger Dared? It uses all the letters, but I think it might mean something else...
  19. So far, the 2's we've found have been very similar to the 1's we've found. I think Renegade Knight's way to describe the difference between 1's and 2's is excellent.
  20. Sounds logical. Another thought...maybe the place it was in originally was mugged!...and the cache was in the open, so they put it close to the original place, but not exactly?
  21. 4 to Letterboxing But, this is Geocaching. When one of these new boxers found that you could find "treasure" with a GPSr she borrowed her brothers GPSr, and read the manuel over a week's time period, then took her sisters out to find some cache! Now she's hooked her family They box, and cache!
  22. I haven't been all myself since I had those 2 transplants. So, it might have been part of me at one time, but I doubt it 'cuz the hospital throws away all the diseased parts they take out of you. And, I seriously doubt that any geocaching surgeons put any of me into a cache! And, even if they did, I wouldn't know it...so maybe it was me?!
  23. Garmin Legend. Why? It seemed like the best one for the $ I had according to all the reviews and posts online. It was $135 with free shipping on Amazon.com It does all that I thought it would, the only thing I might like in addition might be some maps, and auto-routing. Maps can be added to it, so that might be a future thing...but the auto-routing...I think that would cost me another $200 or so, 'cuz I'd have to upgrade to to something better...maybe a 60CS?
  24. What about for people who don't have access to a lathe? I've never seen a drill bit big enough to hollow out a log like that. The biggest one we have is about 1.5 in. You could make a cache container using it, but it wouldn't hold much more than pens and pencils as trade items.
