I gotta disagree on this one; I think webcam caches are fun, and two of the ones I've done (at the Jersey shore and in Times Square, NYC) were placed by someone in Sicily. Another one I enjoyed was in the Hamptons and was placed by a fellow from Jersey. Your photo at the sight (taken by the webcam, usually mounted on a building) proves you were there. I like to bring a geocaching sign ... though sometimes the resolution of the cameras is too low to identify it. And at a couple of them, I expended more time trying to locate the camera then I've spent looking for many a traditional cache! [This message was edited by BassoonPilot on May 02, 2002 at 04:32 AM.] BassoonPilot: That part of my post was more like fun bickering. Different types of caches can attract all types of people. Overall, that's probably a good enough reason to keep them all. I just would rather be walking a trail in the woods looking for a plastic container than having my picture taken with pig statues! By the way, here is the Link to that cache if your interested. The Tavern restaurant mentioned in the clue is a great place to eat! 2. Personally, I think they have no part here. If I were king, they wouldn't. But I'm not king The ones I've seen lately have been unbelievable. Find and airport, Find a covered bridge, Find a Mail Pouch barn. I pass all those things everyday on my way to work and I don't use my GPS'r to find them! I see locationless caches as having 2 functions. 1. An easy way to get a cache out there 2. An easy way to bump your find totals Virtual and web-cam caches are creeping in to my negative list lately as well. Simply because many that I recently see have some e-mail requirement for finding it. Like "e-mail me the answers" or "take your picture with your GPS for credit in finding the cache." Regular caches don't have this requirement, why should virtuals? What's to prevent anyone from logging a regular cache find that says "Found your cache today. Had a great time. Took nothing, left nothing" and never have been there? I enjoy geocaching tremendously, but I will not log a virtual or a Locationless cache, with one exception. I did do the PA benchmark recovery cache because it seemed like a real hunt and the usual honor system for logging was maintained. I had also used the same find for the Indiana benchmark cache, but I have since deleted it. It just didn't feel right. A web-cam cache just showed up as being closest to my home coordinates. Now I will never be able to have my first search page as all finds. To top it off, the placer of this cache is from Georgia, Not Pennsylvania! I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough Smoochnme "Only when the last tree is cut, and the last stream is polluted, and the last fish is caught, will we realize that you can't eat the money" [This message was edited by smoochnme on May 01, 2002 at 09:46 PM.]

  6. I have a Lowrance Global Map 100 and a Garmin Vista. The Lowrance was about $120 and the Garmin was $265. To be honest, I'll take the Lowrance any day. It has equivelent, if not better, mapping capability to the Garmin and stays locked on in heavy canopy much better. Its really an amazing unit. The Garmin is smaller and much easier to deal with because of its size and weight, but I find myself leaving it behind most of the time. We have lots of trees in PA! Best of all, its not much more $$ than the basic Garmin yellow E-trex and has mapping built in. Either unit is great, I just find the Lowrance suits me better. Never used a Magellen product, so I can't comment on them. Good Luck! 7. If I had that many caches that close to my home coordinates, I would be fired from my job. I found about 50 and have to travel over 75 miles to find the next nearest! Central PA is a relative cache desert! But getting better. As far as your dilemma. Don't be in a rush to place a cache. Make it unique and interesting. If you can't think of ideas, consider using other ideas from far away areas of the country. I kinda copied a cache idea from Arizona because I really liked it. I contacted the original placer and got all the okays and some unexpected assistance! They were flattered I liked their cache idea and were willing to help me out. Geocachers are great people! Smoochnme PS. Please resist the urge to do a locationless cache. There are too many already! A virtual is fine, since you do have to use your GPS'r to find it, but IMO they are not what geocaching is all about. 8. The worst part is, many travel bugs are likely picked up by this type of cacher and end up lost. I have contacted at least three who have low statistics, seemed to be "into" it, picked up a travel bug and haven't been heard from since. It's understandable they don't stay involved. I just fear many TB are lost because of this. Smoochnme "Only when the last tree is cut, and the last stream is polluted, and the last fish is caught, will we realize that you can't eat the money"

  10. I was hoping one of the future caches would be near to the current cache. I may even get back sooner since I liked Presque Isle so much. Just finished re-reading "The Two Towers" again and just had to start "The Return of the King" Dittos to Miss Jenn! Start reading um! 12. quote:Originally posted by RAD Dad: "Only when the last tree is cut, and the last stream is polluted, and the last fish is caught, will we realize that you can't eat the money" Because there is money in forestry, that insures that there will never be a "last tree" but always an abundance of new forests growing. And because even the wealthy industrialists like to go fly fishing, kayaking, rafting and so on, there will always be pristine rivers. And because we like to eat fish, and fishermen make money fishing, there will never be a "last fish" instead we will continue to fund hatcheries which insure that the fish continue to return to the seas. In fact the best way to insure that something would stick around is to make it profitable to someone to keep it around. It's amazing how many people can be creative to keep a cash cow available...just look at the envirormental wacko's, they aren't poor, many have no other job but their "activism" and so long as they can find a rare slug to protect, or a wasteland to keep "pristine" they will continue to make money off their activism (while also making themselves feel superiour and more sensitiv than the rest of us users). ummmm....not sure what to say here....so ummm, well errrr, uhhhh, well I guess that's it. Why are you critiquing my signature on this thread? Ever have a favorite place to hunt that is now a housing development? Ever know a nice river to fish that is now polluted with mine drainage? Ever wonder what happened to the New England commercial groundfish fishery? By the way...name me one "pristine" river. 13. I was an earlier visitor to the "Fellowship" cache and the quilt idea was just forming then. It was not available to sign when I completed the cache. I just know I will find a way to complete all the caches related to this but I want to sign the "Fellowship" part too. Will future Tolkein caches take me near the "Fellowship" cache again so I can return and sign the quilt? Smoochnme "Only when the last tree is cut, and the last stream is polluted, and the last fish is caught, will we realize that you can't eat the money"
  14. quote:Originally posted by RAD Dad: No, not simply an unexperienced cacher...I had attached to Unit 14 a tag along with the "dog tag" which explained what Unit 14 was, it's goals as well as how to log it in online, including web address and all. Unless the person was illiterate, lack of experience would not be a valid explanation. ummmm....not sure what to say here....so ummm, well errrr, uhhhh, well I guess that's it. This is what drives me nuts! I'm watching 3 bugs that are MIA and all have been picked up by newbies. That's a bit understandable. A few others have recently been traveling again because I explained to the finders via e-mail what to do with them. I'm floored when you say you went to the trouble of attaching directions and other information and they still go MIA. My fingers are crossed for you! 15. quote:Originally posted by RAD Dad: Missing In Action: Unit 14 http://img.Groundspeak.com/track/5747_200.jpg Last seen in "Park it in the Orchard" by Globaltrek (who placed it there) and Scottb who arrived next, but did not take it. It was not there two days later, when Oregone arrived at the cache. Unit 14, find your way to the nearest station, if you can see this, we are going to deploy a team of search and rescue HumVees. Stay tough. To Unit 14's abductor, please, do the right thing, place Unit 14 in the nearest Geocache to be found by a responsible member of the Geocaching crew. No one needs to know who you are or anything. Just release Unit 14, please. ummmm....not sure what to say here....so ummm, well errrr, uhhhh, well I guess that's it. I'll give odds Unit 14 is in a young child's toybox and the parent(s) or parent has found less than 10 caches. 16. Alan2: There is a similar cache located in PA. It is called the Covered Bridge Cache I have not yet visited this cache, but I plan too! You may want to contact the placer and some of the finders to get some opinions on this type of cache. Smoochnme "Only when the last tree is cut, and the last stream is polluted, and the last fish is caught, will we realize that you can't eat the money"
  17. I'm noticing many topics about palms and PDA's in the "General" category. Would these not be more appropriatly be logged under the "GPS and Software" category. I personally have no reason to read any of these threads but I'm sure they are valuable to others. They seem out of place on the general page. 18. You can configure your profile by using "MyPop" and add a no spam function to your e-mail address. That's how I did it. I honestly don't think I ever got any "spam" in any of my three e-mail accounts. Then again, I don't provide my e-mail address frequently and only if there is some way I can request not receiving promotions. 19. As an FYI, I thought I would post about some recent activity with this cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=7552 Although the cache says its a virtual. It is not. The cache is a large PVC pipe and is hidden in the "crook" of a tree. Nowhere near anybody or anything important, but it is on the edge of a small community. Read the latest log for an explanation. Thankfully, the police returned it after checking it out. I'm anxious to re-visit and see what they left. Evidently after checking it out they added a trade item! I thought that was great. This cache is near my hometown and my brother is a police officer. I wonder if he has heard anything about it. I have e-amailed the owners of these TB and they were not aware of being able to attach them to something One of the finders of another of their TB didn't know about logging it in A suggestion was made that travel bug information should be more prominant on the web page. Personally, I think its fine. But new people who are excited and wanting to do everything sometimes fail to read all the instructions and won't go looking for instructions on the web site. This may be the reason many TB's go MIA.
