  1. This thread or one that lists them should be pinned. This topic comes up over and over and over.... I think it would be a big help to have that at the top for everyone. -Charles
  2. That's a good question. I posted a "Should be Archived" on a cache and mentioned it out here on the forums. Man, that was a MISTAKE. I got flamed for days for doing that. The cache had never been found and the owner was MIA. No resposes to my email messages. I got accused of trying to "steal the location" from someone here. I finally got so tired of the blabbering that I just went back to the log and deleted my entry. It'll just have to sit here in the twilight zone as far as I'm concerned. Maybe you'll have better luck. I'm thinking now my only choice is to adopt the abandonded cache and try to make it interesting enough for people to visit. -Charles
  3. I just re-read Kealia's post and this topic is not about free speech. It's about being respectful and remembering that you're talking to a person on the other end, not just some nameless entity. The lack of respect I see here on the Groundspeak forums is a bad thing. It keeps people from posting because they're intimidated. I think we're losing veterans with experience and newbies alike due to the harsh comments and name-calling I see here. Despite dead_white_man's insistence, I stick to my previous point. Treating people with disrespect and rudeness is NOT excused by "free speech." I can certainly tell the difference between someone who's being helpful and contributing to the forum and someone who's just here to kick people around. I see a lot of dialog here that is anything but "innocent words on a screen." The intent is quite clear. Like my parents always told me: "There's no excuse for poor behavior." -Charles
  4. Hi Keailia, Well said. In one of my computer ethics classes the professor was talking about email and forums. He said something I've always remembered: "Keep in mind that there is a PERSON on the other end of that thread. Never say anything in an email or forum post you wouldn't say to them if they were standing right in front of you." I'm new to Geocaching and even newer to these forums and I have been pretty disappointed with the behavior I've seen here so far. I've been around Internet forums way back to the original Usenet where EVERY thread eventually turned into a flame. I'm seeing the same thing happening here. I sincerely hope the moderators of these forums take notice of this. Flaming someone and then standing behind "free speech" is not an excuse. We all know the difference between a helpful post and one that's meant only to belittle someone. -Charles
  5. That's what I indend to do. I know the spot VERY well. It's an island on Lake Gaston and I've been there many, many times. It's pretty small, however. Maybe 60 feet by about 80 feet. I'm surprised I didn't run across it by accident. Anyway, my intentions are to increase the interest and viability of this cache. If I can find it, I'll put into a cool, waterproof ammo box. -Charles
  6. Gang, My experience here trying to get an abandoned cache archived was decidedly bad. The other posters here on the forum were much more intent on flaming me than being helpful. The cache has never been found and the owner has never maintained it. I gave up on having it archived. I think I'm going to go there and "replace" the nonexistant container with something else and update the find log. It's in a gorgeous location and nobody is visiting it because the logs pretty much indicate it's no longer there. -Charles
  7. That's just fine, guys. Not one person here has been even remotely helpful with this. It's just like the bad old days of usenet where every thread turned into a flame war. I'm out of here.
  8. Unbelieveable. I really can't believe what I just read. "After reading charlesml3's log it looks like he/she/it was never there. charlesml3 just wants to steal the cache location." That has to be the most offensive and nastiest comment I've ever seen on this board. Leatherman accuses me of being a thief and then Prime Suspect comes right back with an "idiot" reference. Not one of you offered the slightest smidgen of constructive feedback. I really thought these forums were a friendly place for all Geocachers, veterans and newbies alike. My impression from this exchange is just the opposite. Disgusting, nasty, "let's all wail on the new guy." All of you should be ashamed of yourselves. You remind me of the bullies I had to deal with as a school kid. If ANY of you had read the full description of the cache you'd notice that the owner has never maintained it. You'd also note that the owner hasn't been here on the forums in many months or responded to my emails. If ANY of you had looked at my profile you'd see I've only been out here for 1 month. It should have been quite clear to all of you that my intent was to place a cache there that people will WANT to go find. Look at the current description and log entries for "Lake Gaston Storm Effect." Would YOU go on a trek to try and find this one? But it really wasn't about that, was it Leatherman/Prime Suspect? It wasn't about whether or not I had a point. It was all about the two of you showing who's "the man" here. I would think that since Geocaching is meant to be a friendly, family oriented sport there would be no occasion where this kind of behavior and these types of comments are appropriate. Then again, I don't set the rules on this forum. But I do see how I've been treated here. I'd been referring lots of my friends to this site and to these forums. It may be time to rethink that idea. -Charles
  9. Here's another one that I asked to have archived. No response on this one either: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...51-4c4af0b60868 It's never been found and the owner doesn't respond to email. -Charles
