My GPS isn't finding satellites
Train_Man replied to miss_rachel's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'm 100% sure garmin will fix it without a receipt. Sometime's they'll even fix it after the warrenty is up if it's a bad problem! Usually they have great customer support, I'm surprised you couldn't get to a person on the phone. Good luck! -
Unless you're business requires extreme accuracy under dense tree coverage, the Vista Cx would probably be a better choice due to it's low cost (unless you work for Bill Gates or something)

There are a few website's that provide garmin formatted maps for select areas, however very few locations are mapped and it is very challenging to load them as they don't always work with mapsource. You can make your own maps with programs like MapCreate and OziExplorer, however this is EXTREMELY time consuming and generally isn't worth your time. For a legend, buying city navigator is also not always a great idea because it has only 8MB so you could only fit one or two chunks of city nav 8.

Anyone know how to get this data on a t-mobile dash/HDA excalibur?

Does it matter... CN North America v8 vs. NT v8?
Train_Man replied to Bruce-YVR's topic in GPS technology and devices
If you don't want the whole country it doesn't matter for 1GB, but if you need the entire nation on 1GB, you'd better get the NT version. -
Unless ofcourse you have a 60CSx (OK fine, you could get a smaller unit) lol I'd suggest Garmin, I'm a garmin customer for life because of their incredible customer support. They sent me free mapsource software because my WAY old version didn't do what i wanted it it to. You should get an etrex Cx line for a $300 price range. Good luck!

One more reason to go Garmin
Train_Man replied to Dad and Little Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
Isn't Garmin support just great? -
I assume you mean 12 volts and not 112 volts? Also, I believe you could make one with a few solar panels and a garmin plug. It's a great idea to have for a long hike!

The 9 digit is the 8 digit and on the rebate form Garmin has instructed customers to add a 9th box.

I think you've just been lucky because even with my 60CSx under dense woods it'll bounce and wander a little. Happy caching!

I have an old black and white palm M125 that works fine for geocaching with iSilo, would also work with cachemate. I'm sure yours would work considering that it has many more features.

I just ordered a 2gb microsd for my new smartphone. It's an A-DATA brand (seems to be the cheapest, I got it for 49.99 on newegg. I'll put it into my GPS to test it out and let you know how it works when it arrives in a few days.

How long must we wait for a 4GB MicroSD/Transflash?
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
I forgot about the segment limit. I wish the TOPO had larger segments like City Navigator now does. Perhaps a new version will let you pick the segment size or something. -
Garmin's download site must be swamped!
Train_Man replied to planewood's topic in GPS technology and devices
I just reinstalled mapsource today and needed my license and had the same problem of needing the 43MB download. I got it at my full connection speed of 64KB/s (512kbit) i know it's slow but it's all I can get here. Perhaps they've fixed their server go garmin! -
Hi, I just got a T-Mobile Dash that runs Windows Mobile 5 smartphone edition (pocket PC software does not install because the phone does not have a touchscreen. Must be software made for Windows Smartphone.) What is the best geocaching software that i can install on this (preferablly free, absolutely no monthly fees)? I'd like to have a map that downloads live from a server and displays geocache symbols. When you select one it shows you info on it. Thats all I'm looking for. Anyone have any suggestions?

Adding Bluetooth Transmission to 60CSx
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks NightPilot, might go with that. Is there a way to make a direct cable to go from the gps (either port, serial or usb on 60CSx) to my Tmobile dash (has a mini USB connector)? this could be cheaper however I don't know if a direct cable is possible. I do know how to make cables from ends and could solder up a BASIC converter circuit. -
Adding Bluetooth Transmission to 60CSx
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'm sure you could find adaptors to do it but why would you want to do it? I'd want it so that I can use my new smartphone (without gps) as a mapping device. -
Is there any way anyone knows of to add bluetooth transmission to the 60CSx (via either the USB or Serial port)? I also have an unused USB bluetooth dongle for a PC, is there any way i could integrate that into a little thing to plug into the gps? Something to purchase? Thanks for any help

GARMIN and MAGELLAN cutting back
Train_Man replied to FlagFinder's topic in GPS technology and devices
A GPS that can read pocket queries! It's so simple programming and yet they just don't understand we want it! -
Before much time goes by, I'd highly recomment calling Garmin and having them reset your account to allow another activation, because now if you were to upgrade you couldn't use mapsource on the new unit because you've used your 2 unlocks. Garmin is great for support and will gladly do this for free.

This is a very interesting discussion. I believe any GPS loaded with software could save him if he know how to use it. Without map software loaded, it's questionable. Here are some screen-shots of my Garmin 60CSx in the area loaded with TOPO and City Nav maps (topo showing). I believe it would have been extremely helpful. Zoomed in of the area (I'm not exactly sure where the car was) This shows the general area which would get him to towns, and major roads.

Change Faceplate on Etrex Unit
Train_Man replied to Dragonmaster13's topic in GPS technology and devices
It is POSSIBLE however it would require you to remove the rubber sheet that goies around the edge of the GPS which would make it no longer water proof, and only water resistant if lucky. I would strongly suggest you just buy the better one if you think it is that ugly (i agree the yellow is horrible). I honestly think the bright yellow color is marketing to get people like you to spend more. I hate companies that do that, but I like Garmin, lol. -
ANyone have Garmin City Navigator NA DVD's on hand?
Train_Man replied to jchiar's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have City Navigator V8 DVD North America in it's retail pack, and it does not state a version on the front of the plastic "box" or on the CD case. It does however say on the UPC "V 8" sideways next to the barcode. I've heard that V7 says it on the case, so if you have V7 it'll say and if it doesn't say assume it's V8 (when you open it up the DVD inside WILL say V8 or V7, mine says V8 obviously.
