60CSX Daylight Savings Time (DST) Patch?
Train_Man replied to Jeff B's topic in GPS technology and devices
I don't quite understand the need for all these patches. I had to update, windows, my windows smartphone, my palm, my gps, and certain windows programs. Wouldn't it have been easier to just change the time on all these devices? I'm just confused when I spent almost an hour downloading and installing patches and in 5 minutes I could have changed the time. -
A 60CSx will get you your screen as well as a better antenna and chipset. This will mean better signal when under tree cover and high accuracy for caching. Personally, I don't think the upgrade from a Vista Cx to 60CSx is worth it, but it is your decision. I have a 60CSx and it's a great unit.

GPSMAP 60Cx, 60CSx, 76Cx, 76CSx version 3.20
Train_Man replied to myotis's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hopefully by 'complain' you don't mean saying "Hey garmin, your software updates are horrible and you should do better". This will simply upset them and encourage them to not even try. You need to give constructive criticisim. -
Probably just some gadget-crazy guy who made a heated hat or something. Probably nothing to worry about, but it's good they are so careful.

downloading caches to palm pilots
Train_Man replied to INDIANA GEO JONES's topic in GPS technology and devices
While an M125 might be ok, when interfaced to a gps, using cachemate is way too slow if you expect to be 're grouping' the caches often in order of where they are based on gps coords. Is there a faster program designed for geocaching on older palms with gps interfaces?. -
downloading caches to palm pilots
Train_Man replied to INDIANA GEO JONES's topic in GPS technology and devices
CacheMate is specifically designed for gps interface (via CacheNav), but apparently isn't doing what you want it to do satisfactorily. It sounds like your asking CacheMate to get your current position from your gps, than sort your database by distance. Why not just get the list of nearest caches directly from your gps, then wait until you actually choose a cache to hunt to pull up the page you need in CacheMate. I'm not sure why you're trying to do this in CacheMate. To me, that doesn't seem efficient (though technically it is possible). If I'm missing something, please clarify, and I'll try to adjust my response accordingly. Problem with that is you have to 'write' in the 6 digit code of every one, and I'm a little picky when it comes to finding a cache (with difficulty and stuff). I'd like a list ON THE PALM in closest order so I can find one without ever looking at the gps. It's a plam M125, perhaps I need a faster one like the Tungsten? -
downloading caches to palm pilots
Train_Man replied to INDIANA GEO JONES's topic in GPS technology and devices
Heres my problem with cachemate: I have interfaced my gps to my palm so i can just tap 'get from gps' and it sorts the order, but it takes about 1.5 minutes to sort and reorganize the caches. This takes too long for practical use. (That's on a 500 cache GPX). Does anyone know of software that is DESIGNED specifically for gps interface? -
Palm geocaching application WITH MAPS?
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have cachemate but I don't like how every time you hit get from gps it takes a minute to sort and reorganize waypoints. -
Are there any palm applications with even basic maps that allow you to tap a point on the map and call up the cache info? that'd be the best way to do it because i've interfaced my gps to my palm for coordinate updates!

Where are the smartphone applications for geocaching?
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'd certainly spend $10-20 on a good quality mapping application for my tmobile dash smartphone. There is one alternative you can do: If you have GSAK, then you can export a certain PQ to HTML. GSAK creates a directory with HTML-files. Search the index-file within the directory and open it, then a web browser is opened and you have a nice "website" where you can choose any caches in the list. My cellphone is a smartphone with Symbian OS and I use Opera Mini to open HTML-created PQ. That's it! I thought of that but it doesn't have maps and it's a pain to scroll down to one because my phone doesn't support searching for some reason. Thanks for the idea! I'm going to be getting a palm so i'll interface it to my gps and use that. -
How much will fit on a 1g MicroSD card?
Train_Man replied to ssfitz's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've got a 1GB card and own both TOPO USA and City Navigator 8 (non NT). I've loaded about 1/3 of the country (western USA) of both city and topo into my unit and am going AT the 2025 map segment with 963MB so I'm using it to perfect efficiency. It almost seems like topo might be a discontinued product (they still produce it but do they release new updates?) -
Storing cache info on a 60C(S)x
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
It will allow 44 characters in the Name field, and 88 in the Comment field, for a total of 132. (Hey, our avatars are pretty close, eh?) Thanks, didn't notice the title and description was seperated. I bet you stole mine and made the background white.. lol jk -
Would it be possible to port this application to windows mobile smartphones without touchscreens? That'd be great because there is very little geocaching software for smartphones

Storing cache info on a 60C(S)x
Train_Man replied to Train_Man's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thats true, i just thought it's a basic thing that should be implemented. I'm only getting 86 characters in a POI description. Know how to fix that? -
I'm a little upset that Garmin hasn't come up with a way of storing cache info (aka description and hint) in the 60CSX which is their top model. Have any of you found a way to do this?

I don't understand why I've spent hours looking for a basic geocaching application for my windows mobile 5.0 SMARTPHONE and haven't found one yet. There are tons for pocket pc, but nobody seems to develop them for smartphone. All i'm looking for is a basic map with cache info. If anyone could help out with this, it'd be great!
-
Sadly it's not a PPC, only compatible with windows smartphone applications.
-
Is the any smartphone applications that display mapsource data (topo, and possibly city navigator?). Do they support autorouting? I can't find any that are for smartphone.
-
All i'm looking for is a basic (and cheap) application for my windows mobile SMARTPHONE 5.0 (tmobile dash) that can download some maps from some server and download geocaches to put onto the map. When selected, a geocache would show it's info in a window. It's hard to find one that's not for pocketPC (Those have touchscreens so they're not compatible with my phone). It'd be good if i could load in GPX files also for when i'm out of cell range. Any programs you know of?

Linux is the way of the future. I signed the list as #33. Doesn't look like it's getting very far

Garmin GPS firmware 3.10 for 60/76C(S)x
Train_Man replied to jotne's topic in GPS technology and devices
Have people contacted Garmin about the the POI search bug? It seems they should have fixed it after the 6 months we waited for this 'routine' update. I'm getting a little upset with the company for this bad of a bug in a new unit.
