  1. wow this would be simply amazing. I've always wanted a good caching program for my T-mobile dash but I've been stuck with my old Palm M125 on cachemate. I don't have any suggestions right now, but I'll certainly be interested in the beta when you have something ready! Hope you can make it all work out!
  2. When you are navigating to a 'closed cache' icon waypoint, if you cycle through the pages you will find that page again. You are correct that all pressing found does is mark it as found by changing the icon. (It adds a calender entry on my 60CSx but I can't remember if the legend has a calendar). If you go to find waypoints, you can go to the menu and tell it to sort by icon, then select closed geocaches and the one you just 'opened' will not be on the list. Hope that helps you understand the geocaching features of the legend
  3. While some small handheld gps units might report they're getting 3ft or less, most likely they're just mis-reporting that information. The only real way to have that good of an accuracy is to have either an array of gps receivers or a differential gps setup. Both of these would be too costly and large for geocaching. 10ft is just fine to find any cache.
  4. Interesting! I wonder what the new Magellan Triton is using.... I heard the tritons are using SiRF but I'm not 100% sure on that.
  5. If you navigate in national parks, the map color will be a pretty green
  6. I don't think size would be an issue, because my palm holds my closest 500 caches with descriptions and the latest 5 logs in under 1MB. If it holds cache data, I want one. If not, I really don't think it's worth it.
  7. Has anyone applied this update with Windows Vista? Mine won't let me and I don't know if it's related to my recent upgrade to windows vista.
  8. not to be negative, but this sounds like the iphone: marketing. They want people to say 'ohhhh it has a touch screen it must be good'. or 'wow it even has a flash light'. To me it sounds like a fragile unit and I'll just stick with my 60CSx.
  9. Before I got my 60CSx I had the same laptop issue you did. I got a usb serial adapter and it worked fine. I'm pretty sure mapsource will only read from COM1-3, so go into the device manager, and in the properties of the adapter you should be able to set what COM port it will emulate. Pick one two or three and it should work out.
  10. Just to add, I remember when I was having my problems, I did not have waas coverage (atleast I'm 90% sure lol)
  11. I was caching this last saturday with my 60CSx, and when asked what direction it was, it was always 50-100 feet in a different direction. Very strange this is happening everywhere. It must be solar radiation of some type?
  12. OK I have a problem. I just downloaded the update and tried it on my 60CSx and it said the GPS is not responding and can't be updated. The gps works fine right now and is plugged in to the usb. I even tried it unplugged, there was nothing on the list, plugged it in, and it appeared on the USB update list, so it is obviously detecting it to some degree. Anyone have any suggestions? Could it be due to the fact that I'm running vista (32 bit if that matters)?
  13. number 21 is very interesting. Is that saying 60's can be damaged but 76's can't? I was hoping for something like 22. Added feature to store and display gpx cache data... I guess I can keep on dreaming lol
  14. If it doesn't use sirf, it won't compare to the 60CSx at all. The 60c(s)x is by far the best unit on the market right now and let me tell you, it's worth every dollar. I paid $499 for mine at release and I still think it was worth it, so that's my thoughts
  15. Are you holding the unit vertical with the compass turned on? Because that could cause the compass sensor to be randomly "spinning" which would make the map move and spin. The unit should be flat not vertical using the compass, so just turn the compass off when you can't hold it level
  16. That flight attendant was over-reacting, however there are some reasons they don't want gps technology. If a terrorist knows where they are, don't you think that could be a tool for them even it it doesn't shut off the planes radio stack? Also, as with phones, gps, pagers, and anything that's wireless will not interfere with the planes radio stack IF it's properly operating and was FCC authorized. Planes run in the range of 105-130MHZ , which is 100% reserved for flight control as far as the FCC knows, but the airlines are simply avoiding one thing: Devices that are NOT currently running under FCC policy. Also cell phones have a second reason for being banned and that is that they don't want people talking because that could annoy other passengers
  17. I've often wondered about this. I have taken my GPS on carry-on before, however I've never used it in the flight. I know it doesn't transmit any signals, however I believe there is a different threat they are worried about. If people know EXACTLY where they are, it would make it a lot easier for events like 9/11 to be executed. Just a thought, but not sure if it's true or not. I sure hope I can use my smartphone on my flight in a week with the phone turned off so I can watch some movies Maybe I'll have to paint it white to look like an ipod lol
  18. If you download the latest firmware (at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1385) it says added feature "Add data card information page". I know it works well with my 60CSx and gives lots of data on the card info!
  19. I don't think recovery keys reload firmware, just settings. Even on Garmins I believe it only resets the settings and not the firmware. You probably have a dead unit unless they will replace it in a warrenty or something.
  20. Garmin support is excellent and you'll have it back very soon. It is unlikely that the heat from the sun caused this, it was likely either a memory card issue, a defective processor chip that overheated, or a manufacturer defect screen. What ever the problem was, I'm sure Garmin will send you a brand new unit
  21. The card should not be the issue. What are you programming it through, the 76, the legend, or a card reader? You have to transfer the mapsets into the legend rather than the 76, and a card-reader may even write the 76 unlock codes. Try putting the 128 into the legend, plugging that into your computer, and transferring from mapsource right to the device.
  22. I used to have a legend, did something similar. I upgraded to a 60CSx. I did an update and reset the unit, and sorry to say but it probably won't help permanently. Might help it for a week. But the good news is it's just the screen, and as long as you can hit it or do something to make it work, it shouldn't affect the GPS feature!
  23. This is so stupid. It should be illegal, but on top of that it's just a plain dumb business plan. They think more people will buy the software more often, but in reality now I'll probably never upgrade my 60CSx and never ever buy another mapsource product ever again. This is a clear violation of what we purchased and is just plain wrong and stupid.
  24. I only have good things to say about garmin tech support. I had mapsource city navigator V4 and a 60CSx and there is a little known bug with searching for address on a 60C(s)X series with city navigator V4. They weren't even really aware of it until i explained it and they tried it on their units and had the same problem. They promptly sent me a free copy of city navigator v8 because my old version wasn't holding up to my expectations. Now this is amazing support! I will ALWAYS buy garmin equipment from now on. And to those of you saying you should have had to pay for it, I wasn't even requesting a copy at all and was only asking for a fix.
  25. If it will be recognized at all by a computer even as a corrupt drive, just format it on the system and reload map data. Hope it works
