  1. I'm awed by the geocaching world....it has helped me remember that there is still a lot of good out there! Many people have contacted me about sending me a coin or two....wow very generous folks out there! Even had a couple of wonderful cachers show up at my doorstep with a goodie box with coins, pins, wristbands and great geochat! My daughter and I were an awe with this generous gesture! Thank you everybody from Eugene, Oregon!
  2. Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions....getting to work on replacing car window, dealing with insurance, etc. Then I will call a few more pawn shops to alert them to the possibility....a few I talked to yesterday were pretty supportive. You hear these stories....but just never imagine it happening to you. Just a very strange feeling. Thank you all! The geocaching world is a wonderful place to be.
  3. Help! Today I brought a bunch of geocoins with me to work to share with some potential geocachers. These coins included coins my daughter and I have collected over the past couple of years...from GW VII in Bell Buckle to numerous coin challenges throughout the state of Oregon....to the GPS Maze Adventure in Redding, Ca. And many other beautiful coins that are most likely irreplacable. After work I decided to stop and grab a cache on the way home. Biggest mistake I ever made. I parked along with about 10 other cars and headed to cache...upon my return most of the cars had been broken into. Windows broke trunks opened, etc. Everything gone! Immediately I thought big deal they got muy lunch bag and some clothes I was donating to Goodwill....then it dawned on me.....at the bottom of my backpack....were the prized geocoins that my family and I had worked so hard to gather and collect. I wanted to just collapse....just had nothing to say...speechless...my heart just sank. geocaching has become pretty much our families life support and this collection has meant so much to us. To have someone who it means so little to steal this from us...is just devastating. I know there there are worse things that could have happened....but we are just floored by this. I made the police report, called local pawn shops....will report to insurance....but as a coin collector you can imagine how this must feel. Here's the kicker......all coins unactivated. UGH!!!! Please if anyone sees a large quantity of coins trying to be unloaded somewhere....eBay, Craiglist etc....we are located in the Eugene, Oregon area and the return (little hope) would mean the world to me, tobe4evr1 and my daughter, ukrainian princess. Please send us an email with any information or ideas. Thanks for letting me ramble.....but I thought if anyone would be a good listener it would be my geocaching family. Dana tobe4evr1
  4. I've been a bit frustrated lately when I try to drill down to caches that I haven't found in Advance Search Options. I put in my criteria and click the exclude found and owned caches.....but the found and owned caches still come up within my list.....what am I missing? Is this a glitch being worked on?
  5. Good idea....but I do agree that not just any cache that calls itself a challenge is a challenge.....there should be some pretty tight guidelines to qualify.
  6. I wanted to wait a bit on reading the forum to get an overall feel of how this was being received. I've read through the entire two pages of comments and I'm just amazed. I look at a feat of this magnitude and really admire the effort and tenacity put forth by three friends sharing in an activity that they all cherish. The only thing I can take away from the naysayers out there is jealousy......I know I'm jealous as all get out! They were not going for a trophy, medal or cash reward....for the mere challenge and adventure. Whether they failed or achieved their goal they were going to have a blast and caching memories they will share for the rest of their lives. People......if you have a dream or goal....go for it....or you will always be on the sidelines just issuing an opinion. I follow this rubric: 1. Did they have a plan with the realization that they could come home with less than they set out for? YES 2. Noticing a day before their lenghty journey that the trail had been archived (keep in mind not all 695 caches were archived)....did they contact the powers to be and ask if the run was still available to pursue? YES 3. Were they given approval to go after the caches that had been archived? YES 4. Did they physically find 695 caches? YES 5. Did they get their caching names and a date on the log sheet? YES 6. Did they rehide the cache as well as they found it? YES 7. Did they do all this in a 24 hour period? YES I STAND AND APPLAUD YOU LEGOBOYJJ, RAIN OR SHINE AND ZSTEVE!!! NICELY EXECUTED. Will this record stand? Most likely not.....based upon their stats and terrain I'd say the number can go much higher on another trail somewhere in the world. There was a lot of negativity when the Wright Brothers dreamed of soaring through the air......let's applaud them and others before them that planned an adventure and followed through on it. .....and remember to please spay and neuter your pets.
  7. I think the relevency of time is up to each and every cacher. As we all know cachers come from every walk of life. Some have plenty of time and others make time depending on their involvement in the sport. There are a few people I know in our area that place a watch on all caches they have found. Makes for some busy nights sorting through emails....but it also provides quite the insight into caches and experiences people have with them. Every once in a while some logs provide quite the entertainment. Also can be fun to see when a high profile cacher is touring the area. I know that a Moun10bike coin was found that way. As far as checking on people that are up to no good....I don't know. Unfortunately there are cachers that play by different rules. I thought the whole idea of geocaching was making the find of the cache and the journey that brought you to it. For some people it is about that. For others they don't even have to make the find to log it. For some driving by is sufficient. I don't understand the logic....but then again since we aren't doing this as a profession and it is an individual game...I guess you can make your own rules as you go. Just have to remember the game means many things to many people. I do however believe that a true cacher is a purist in their caching credes. Find cache, sign log, log on website. Watching cache listings can tell you many things. It can of course be very informational as to caches that you plan on doing. I don't believe that people do it as a big brother thing....we love geocaching and every aspect of it! BTW - I like ponies....do you like ponies? You knew I'd throw in didn't you?
  8. [PS: my ratio is 405/1, a meer .002%. Just hid my first cache, and if I'm to believe the logs, its a goodun.] I'm very curious about what's being done about this cache.....it appears to be left alone and sounds like this kind of thing is ok to do. I stand corrected..... Archived January 28 by Michael (0 found) Caches that Solicit Solicitations are off-limits. For example, caches perceived to be posted for religious, political, charitable or social agendas are not permitted. Geocaching is supposed to be a light, fun activity, [b[not a platform for an agenda. This cache has a social agenda. It has been archived by Groundspeak.
  9. I'm very curious about what's being done about this cache.....it appears to be left alone and sounds like this kind of thing is ok to do. I'm saddened that something that has become an integral part of my life can evolve into mean spiritedness. I choose not to CACHE IT FORWARD in this fashion. I have never used the ignore button before. I thought that if one was truly a cacher they should attempt each and every cache that came along. I now have to go against my belief and use that dreaded "ignore" button. To those people that ended up on this list in an intended negative light....I apologize on behalf of all those cachers that appreciate all you do for the sport of geocaching. I know several of these cachers personally and without them I would not have grown to love this sport the way I do. Their contributions , though maybe not advertised or trumpeted from the highest hill are far greater than a person wearing blinders will ever know. Geocaching though far from it's deathbed...could approach that arena with negativity and ugliness like this.
  10. I actually did report this to a reviewer and I was told that they are not the "cache log police or what's in a container police". I actually think they should be or someone should be when one finds something offensive in a cache or contrary to caching guidelines.
  11. That's pretty wacked! But he's entitlted to his opinion, and can do anything he wants, as long as it doesn't violate the guidelines. There have been several "cachers who don't give back" threads here in the forums, and the opinions here usually run pretty unanimously opposed to his point of view. I agree everyone is entitled to their opinion and the forums are a great place for them. This cache actually does violate the geocaching guidelines. No caches are allowed that show some sort of agenda. This one screams agenda. I think no cacher should be named or insulted in a cache. Trust me this is not a personal vendetta for me...my name is not on this list. However I know many that are and they are some of the biggest contributors to this sport.
  12. Yes this list shows mostly locals and a handful of cachers from nearby towns. They use the hide to find ratio as a measuring stick. The container contains a log and this list....with specific instructions not to leave trade items. The container is an ammo can.
  13. There is a fairly new cache in the Central Oregon area that has some interesting contents. The listing tells you not to trade anything, and when you get to the cache, you should read what's inside and you will understand. I have attached a snapshot of what's inside and included here. My question is this.....not do we all enjoy new caches.....the obvious answer there is of course!!!! But do we make a list....with peoples names on it.....place it in the cache container and say these people are good and contributing and these people are bad or "takers" and not contributing? I think that's a little extreme. We have a cacher in our area that had a better idea in the same spirit. He placed a cache called Spawn or something like that. Inside his container he had many pre-put together and ready to go containers, to help encourage new caches. This was very successful. The cache with a list of names seems to me to be a bit inappropriate. The sport of geocaching means many things to many different people and people contribute in many ways. I am a cacher with almost 3000 finds and I have 70 hides. That % works out to be far less than one %, hides to finds ratio. I do my best to share my small amount of knowledge with new cachers, talk it up with interested folks, plan events and cache excursions. Does this mean I'm a "taker" and not doing my fair share? Do we actually need to look at fellow cachers and measure their contribution status and then publish that? I'm curious what your take on this is? Sorry the picture is hard to read....but if you save it you can make it bigger and read it.
  14. We are very close to start booking your rooms!!! I have signed the contract they have sent me and just waiting for the return of it signed by them. The details are as follows: 1. Once I give you the green light.....you will call the hotel and book your room according to your needs, one bed, two beds, smoking, non-smoking etc. 2. The rate is $76.00 + tax 3. Hotel is Best Western Bonanza Inn in Yuba City about 10-15 miles from event. 4. Reservations can be made by calling 530-674-8824. 5. When calling refer to "Group rate contract" named "GeoWoodstock". 6. These rooms need to be booked ASAP. We already have enough for the minimum of 10 rooms but there has been a ton of interest expressed in this and sounds like it will be quite successful. 7. You do not have to stay the entire time of 5/22 to 5/26, but you do need to stay a minimum of at least 2 nights to qualify for this special deal. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at 541-914-1037. Remember a special meet and greet is in the works for the night before. I wanted to open this up to NW cachers first, but plan on posting on other forums as well, since this event is attended by so many. So the sooner you book the better. Watch for my green light to come soon!
  15. Hello Geocachers! With GW 2008 not far away cachers all around are starting to make their plans to attend next year. So part of making plans involves....."Where will we stay?" Well we have found a place not to far from the event. A contract has been put together and we are soon starting to book rooms with a special group rate of $76 + tax set up. If your interested or have questions feel free to contact me. More details to follow shortly. So far we already have quite a few rooms committed to. Looks like the geocachers will be taking over this hotel. They have WiFi, cafe, lounge, refrigerators, microwaves, pool, spa, etc. Woohoo! Dana tobe4evr1
  16. I don't think a reviewer should use their position to give them an advantage on a cache. If they want to use the privileged information they possess they should wait till after there is a FTF posted. Especially if there is a prize involved.
