  1. Two other possibilities worth considering... One, it's not been activated yet, but that would seem odd. Two, it has been activated and is listed as being in the inventory of that cache... That would at least help you track down the owner. Z.
  2. The original post explained it better before editing... Basically a multi-stage that referred to a "formula" and the OP wasn't sure what formula. Z.
  3. Nobody likes soggy logs. Nobody likes finding full logs. Everybody wants to be first to find... So, let's just laminate a log sheet, provide a whiteboard marker and eraser, and everyone can be first to find on the perpetually empty log. Z.
  4. Some of us do. Strictly self enforcing though. Indeed... I was recently at a cache site (DNF) which I knew about because I'd been there before but I didn't know any of the history. The cache description has a lot of the history. It was less of a wow for me because I knew that there was a covered bridge just there, but the first time I found it it was definitely a wow moment. The fact that it was a DNF was irrelevant, it got me out of the house and wandering about. Z.
  5. I picked up 50 of them for about $3 from a large chain... I needed them for prescription meds though. Z.
  6. Not specifically for Caching but aLokSaks are thicker and waterproof... provided that they are sealed properly. aLokSak web site Z.
  7. If you don't mind the expense you might want to consider aLokSak for the log... Manufacturers web page I've used some as part of a first aid kit and they seem to be good, as long as people actually seal them. Z.
  8. Indeed, of the TBs and coins that I've found some where found shortly before a planned trip to Los Angeles and some while there. I took the ones from Portland, Oregon down with me and brought some back. Both sides got miles. At least one that I dropped in LA went off to the east some distance after... Z.
  9. So, as a newbie, how should I post a log on a cache that hasn't been found for over a month, isn't visible anywhere in the area it is supposed to be and the last find claims "It's out in the open as they've been clearing brush, I could see it from some distance away." In this case I logged a DNF stating that I couldn't findt, that I was in the right area and that the previous log (over a month earlier) had said that it was really obvious. After asking on the forums someone suggested I post a NM as well. So I did. There has been one update since. Someone else didn't find it and posted a NM as well. The CO doesn't appear to have logged in since September last year... What else could be done? As for posting a NM just because I didn't find it... No, I normally post a DNF. So far two of my DNFs have turned out to be completely missing, one I later found and the final one is the one I mentioned above... Not finding it is not grounds for an NM, but in some circumstances it seems to be a reasonable option. Z.
  10. Probably the thing that I most liked leaving was a vintage Pocket Watch Fob. I don't collect them, but I know some people do. It was sitting around in my drawer gathering dust and hopefully whoever finds/takes it will appreciate it more than I do. I've also left small double ended screwdrivers, keyrings, flashlights,... and the like. I try and leave something I would like to find. Z.
  11. Indeed... First Log a DNF (Did Not Find) and if the owner is on the ball they might check it themselves and either offer you hints, or will Archive it. I've posted 4 DNFs... Of those two are definitely gone, one is probably gone, and the fourth one I found later... Z.
  12. Pathtags CAN be traded. They are tracked at a different website, and are rather interesting... They are a cheaper way of getting a semi-trackable item. Pathtags are not individually trackable, but who has a pathtag is tracked. For example I have two pathtags, one from props4tom and one from illinitrekker, I am not the only person with these pathtags but they can tell whether I have them. I would also suggest starting with a size small or larger cache as micro caches can be very hard to find (especially in the dark). Z.
  13. Cemeteries are there as a last resting place and a memorial to the dead. In Victorian times it was quite common to have picnics in Cemeteries. My personal belief is that as long as you treat the place with respect then it shouldn't be an issue. Would people object if you went geocaching in a cemetery with a bunch of flowers and respectfully laid flowers on random graves? Z.
  14. Well, I was looking in the $ section at Target the other day and there was a bunch of stuff that would work. Other ideas I've had... Dollar Stores Party supply stores Hardware stores not knowing what other people consider reasonable I've left behind a mix of things depending on what I had available to me so far... Double ended screwdrivers Keyrings (promotional and fancy) LED flashlight A Vintage Pocket Watch Fob (in a ziplock bag with a note explaining what it was) I've also moved trackable items around a bit... Things I've found that were cool... small, odd souvenirs (Grand Coulee Dam charm, walking stick badges,... ) Pathtags Home made "Geo pet rocks" Wooden nickels A tiny bicycle repair kit (I didn't take it but it was still cool to find). Marbles ... Think of what you've found that you liked, and think where you might be able to get something similar... The mini first aid kit idea seems like a good one to me... Particularly as my wife claims I have a first aid kit fetish... Z.
  15. I've claimed one find that I didn't sign... There was no pen, I forgot to bring a pen, and the cache wasn't marked "bring your own pen". I've claimed two Virtual finds that I didn't get the correct answers to the questions... One of them I was talking with the owner and mentioned that I'd not been geocaching when I went to where the Virtual was and had photographed many plaques but obviously not got the right one. He told me to take it as a Find. I was hoping to get back and find the proper one myself. The second one was similar but in a different location. Obviously with a Virtual Cache it's not possible to sign the log. I've also claimed four DNFs. One is confirmed as being gone, one I'm sure has gone, one may or may not still be there, I don't know, and the last one I later found and logged as a find. I think to some extent it's a matter of honour... I wouldn't think of claiming a find that I hadn't found. The two Virtuals are slightly different. I was in the right place but without the questions and so I couldn't get the right answers. However I was where I was supposed to be, so I "found" them, they were logged with the approval of the owner. But if I was in the right spot for a physical cache and didn't find it... That's a DNF. Z.
  16. Mine so far... Found 24 Didn't find 4 I am certain that at least two of the DNFs are no longer there... Nobody has logged any of them as being found since, and one of those has been logged as not being there by someone who had previously found it. I'm working on some puzzle caches at the moment... I've completed the puzzles on two, one is a DNF, the second I haven't tried yet. The third puzzle has me completely stumped. I can always go and try for a 1/1 to remind myself that it's not that bad... Hardest I've found so far is only a 2 but the hardest terrain was a 3.5 Z. Z.
  17. Thanks, I did mark it as a DNF... But I'll add the "Needs Maintenance" My guess is that as the previous find, over a month earlier noted that it was "very exposed" that it is no more. Thanks again. Z.
  18. Ummm, I'm relatively new here, and I'm not sure I entirely understand how this should work... but this seems like the right place to ask. There is supposedly a cache near my home. I'm pretty sure it's gone missing. The owner hasn't been on since the end of last year, the last find was over a month ago, and when I was there I couldn't find it. Do I flag it as "needs archived" or do I assume that this is my first DNF, and wait for someone else to go back and check on it? It is GC18MTR Beggar's Tick's guard-dog's stash cache. Z.
