  1. You mentioned most of the erred marks were set in 1974. I think that's your answer! Was anyone paying attention in 1974? After all, if you can remember the 70's, you weren't there.
  2. No that's Henry Cowell. A lot of people end up at Coe wondering "Where are all the redwoods?!"
  3. While hiking in a local state park (Henry W. Coe) I saw a survey marker just off the trail set in a concrete footer. I took a photo (sorry, it was a real photo not digital and thus not on my computer). It was marked "California Dept of Parks & Beaches" with the year 1966 and the designation F-5 stamped into it. I read the FAQ on benchmarks that aren't on the website, so I just wanted to share this info with everyone. I'm hoping someone can give me some history on these benchmarks and maybe a little about the old department of Parks and Beaches. I'll try to get the phot scanned, but until then, for those who are interested, the location is: N37°10.934 W121.31746
  4. Wow, that drawing looks like what I could be talking about. I'll definitely have to go back and check that out soon. Thanks for all the info! Much appreciated! If I find anything interesting underneath I'll be sure to post it here!
  5. On my first benchmark hunt the other day, my GPS led me to the middle of an intersection where a "City Monument" was placed. I thought this was the benchmark so I logged it and left only to discover that this was in fact not a benchmark. This plaque is a small 6x6 inch (approx.) square with a small square hole in the middle and reads "City" towards the top and "Monument" towards the bottom. I've tried Googling these and can't find out any info. I've even seen a few more while driving. Anyone have any idea what these are or what they're used for? I live in the bay area and tried the CalTrans website but I didn't find anything. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.
