  1. Hi all,

I've been searching past posts re: NiMH batteries, and I think I'll try out the Sanyo Eneloops with my 60CSx. It seems folks really like them (have they advanced beyond 2000 mAh though?).

But from what I can tell (as a n00b to rechargeables), the batteries are only half the story. It appears the charger is key, as well.

Can someone recommend a charger that works both in home and in the car which won't fry the batteries and which will charge them at a decent rate (I don't NEED a 15 min charge, but I suppose it would be nice)?

    Thanks in advance,

    Comrade Ammocanov of the CLF.

  2. Ugh, similar to the OP, I'm trying to decide between the Oregon 300 and the PN-40.

Honestly, I just can't decide! Heh.

Delorme folks keep talking about "Cache Register." Is this supposed to be a "GSAK for the Delorme?" Erm, does GSAK work with the Delorme? I can't imagine not using GSAK, I love all its capabilities.

  3. The important point is that GE was negatively impacting user experience out of proportion to its usefulness.

Perhaps this has already been asked but can you expand on this a little because to be quite frank, I fail to see how this can be the case unless there is/was some horribly inefficient code generating the KML. At the end of the day, the KML Overlay is/was a location search like any other - it boils down to asking the database server to 'return the caches near location X'. The only thing that's different is the presentation layer. Instead of output in HTML (for bog standard location searches) or JSON for the Google Map, the output is a KML document. If it's the KML builder that's causing the slow-down, might I suggest a better solution might be to resolve the bottleneck within it rather than just axing a useful feature.

I feel that once folks get past the mourning period and start exploring other options you'll all be much happier. I am very sorry for those of you whose routine has been disrupted by this change. I know what that's like. I would just encourage you to adapt to a new way of Geocaching so you can get past this and back to enjoying the game. We'll get back to making the site better.

 I'm sure I'm echoing what's already been said here but the problem is not that you're "changing the routine", but that you're removing one of the site's most useful features. Sure, there are alternatives but none of them are as slick, easy to use and responsive as the KML Overlay. Further, those that want to continue to use GE to find caches they wish to hunt will now have to perform a PQ (GE opens GPX files quite happily and seems to understand the Groundspeak namespace to boot) but I'm sure I these extra PQs probably negate the performance gain from axing the KML Overlay :o

(Edited to fix broken quote tags )

Well spoken but in the end I think futile. The frog has spoken and they have made it quite clear that they do not care if it was a better tool. It matters not that so many have pointed out that perhaps making a change in the way the KML was generated or implemented may have been a better solution. They have made it abundantly clear that they don't care to explain what the root of the problem was. TPTB are quite happy to say "Site performance" and leave it at that.

Me, I used to use my PQs as needed. As I was preparing to go caching I ran a fresh one and went with it. Now I am going to start using every one I can. Five a day. I will most likely delete 95 percent of them unopened but as long as I have paid for them I am going to give the server what little hit I can. I encourage the rest of you to do likewise. Will it help? I doubt it. Will it have enough of an impact to make 'em pay attention? Not likely. But we won't know if we don't try.

I've been out of caching a few months, with a new baby and all, but I was shocked to see THE most helpful geocaching tool outside of GSAK, the GE .KML file, shut down. Ack, what a horrible decision.

I'll have to take the above cacher's interesting approach now, too.

    CLF.

  4. Sadly, I must agree with your points. It looks like the new operational imperative at Groundspeak is to pander to the demands of the lowest common denominator, that is the mindless agenda of the numbers-hunters and the park-and-grab crowd. Sad.

    Vinny,

Can I use your post as my new signature line?

Wow, you KNOW there's something wrong with Groundspeak policy when it finds you on the same side of the fence with someone with rampant bigotry in their signature.

    *shrug*

  5. With the Kindle 2 coming out, I wonder if anyone has been able to get to view cache pages on the Kindle yet. I'll be getting it as a reader, but it can't hurt to have all "always on" EVDO available for when I'm out reading in the woods and a new cache is published.

I have a Kindle 2 and using the WAP site, I logged in fine, searched for caches by zip code fine, found and logged a note on one of my caches just fine.

It wasn't a very fast endeavor, but then again, it wasn't all that slow either. I'm impressed.

  6. ndfesh - ;) I'm still determined to give it a go. Once I use the 60Csx out on a hunt, I maybe decide I like using it! If not, well, then I'll let you know!

SD Marc - Thanks for the encouragement and the tips. I will check them out. I'm determined to learn how to get the most out of the unit! It just that because the Triton 200 is so limited (or so I've read), learning to use it was a breeze. I think I was spoiled by the nice, high-res screen and the ability to go paperless with it. I understand the 60Csx is a much more capable unit, so I wanna learn how to utilize it's capabilities.

thanks but i was lucky enough to score a unit at amazon this morning for $159.

Mind my asking how folks are getting 60Csx's for only $159 at Amazon?! That's an amazing deal, and I'll buy another one for family if I can find it.

Ack, nevermind, I found a bunch of threads regarding this on the front page.

    Thanks,

    Comrade Ammocanov of the CLF.

  7. The last 6 MONTHS of posts (the last 27 posts) have had nothing to do with geocaching.

Mods, would you be so kind as to move this thread over to your own OFF-TOPIC forum?

    Thanks.

Just how did you think Geocaching started in the first place? Hmmmmm? Without the military you'd be without your GPS and your Geocaching, so, have some respect, eh?

    Thanks,

    Mac

Wow. To slaughter Hamlet, methinks thou doth protesth too much, m'lady.

I didn't criticize your beloved military, I just asked the mods to kindly move this thread where it belonged: the OT forum.

I cruise these "Geocaching Topics" forums to learn and discussing things geocaching related, and your thread here is simply distracting clutter in that regard.

How 'bout I create a thread here regarding global warming? By your logic, without the globe there'd be no geocaching, so it's a "Geocaching Topic"!

    MrW.

  8. Would you please include a note to that effect on the cache page Mr. W.? I'd like to make a special effort to go.

You bet, will do. When I put the Oct event in the queue I'll be sure to mention it'll be the awards ceremony.

    Cheers,

    MrW.

    The polls are now open!

    Go to:

    http://www.cacheaddicts.org/awards1/public...hp?name=bestof1

and vote for your favorite nominees. Please note, IP address will be tracked and monitored very carefully, as will geocaching.com IDs. Let's keep it clean, folks, this is just a friendly competition. I've got a lot on my plate right now, so please don't waste my time with proxy servers and other "creative" ballot box stuffing that I'd have to sort out.

Polls will be open until till 11:59pm on Saturday 9/6/08.

Thanks, and may the best caches win!

    James aka Mr. Wisearse.

  9. HI

What do you think about the Nokia N or E service. I want a option that shows me the caches on the device and then I can download the info. I am going on vacation and dont know which route I will take, so I dont know what to download before hand. Does Nokia support Geocaching?

I am a bit in the dark about all of this.

What do you need to get a setup like this working?

I have the Nokia N700 tablet, and though I love it for basic web surfing while traveling, and most importantly for reading ebooks, I really don't see it as a geocaching PDA. It's too fragile and expensive (to take on higher terrain ventures), and you have to convert the gpx files into html and then move them over to the Nokia (which seems to take an inordinate amount of time). Once the caches are in the tablet, the device takes too long to boot and drains batteries too fast for any kind of quantity in your searching.

    My two copper,

    MrW.

  10. Marko Ramius down in SoCal often publishes caches withing MINUTES, not hours, but MINUTES of being submitted. Also, when there's a problem with a cache submission, he'll actually help you to make things right with the cache instead of just deny publication. I can't imagine a better reviewer.

    MrW.

  11. I see that now Garmin is introducing a new series of handhelds called the "Oregon's". These new units seem to have adandoned the famous "Rock & Roller" design in favor of a touch screen and hopefully many other fixes that were badly needed. I wonder if the Colorados have been written off as a poor design and a splash in the pan. It does seem like they are entirely too problematic.

What I wonder is, are these new unit's displays going to be as hard to see in anything but the best lighting like the Colorados, do they actually have a functional clock, and do they leak if exposed to the shallowest water.

Surely Garmin has learned a few lessons from their ill-fated Colorados and corrected them in these new Oregons?

Erm, no offense, but there are already three topics about the Oregon still on the front page of this forum.
