Oh, I was just leaving a note on the cache log. Didn't think to note it on the trackable log. Thanks! And thanks for the info about the sweeps. It makes me feel a little better knowing they go missing so regularly...bit sad, but at least I know it is the norm in the game. I'll check the drop dates next time. Didn't think about that either.

What got you into this crazy sport/hobby/obession?
thistleRacers replied to mc3cats's topic in General geocaching topics
Let's see... I always wanted to be a navigator as a kid. Loved compasses and maps, so much so that I got a couple degrees around the use of them.... My mom was an Outward bound instructor and taught survival camping. I have a natural adventurous spirit. Never owned a GPSr and didn't know much about the sport until we got one. We got one becuase my husband wanted one for the car that talked to him (because he is not good with directions...that whole opposites attrack thing, i guess). Now my son and I use my husbands GPSr for a game/sport that I seemed to have been born to play -
I travel to Atlanta (~ 65 miles away) every 2 or 3 weeks. Sometimes I'll get a chance to do caches that have room for trackables. This time we are going on a picnic to a spot specifically because it is near some regular sized geocaches. The past 2 days my son and I have gotten to a few caches and hoped to get the trackables to take with us to the ATL...there were none there. The last time I went down too, the same thing happened. Do they really go missing that readily? I always check the bugs/coins logs to see if the move just wasn't recorded...but no luck... I haven't bought any yet for ourselves to "set free" and right now, with my experiences we may never play the trackable game. i just wanted to vent a little... Thanks for reading!

Geocaching in the Peace Corps
thistleRacers replied to thistleRacers's topic in General geocaching topics
This being an international forum, It would be cool if Vista Volunteers or other Peace-Corp-like volunteers from other countries chimed in too -
I served in Nepal from 1992 to 1994. Only one PCV that I knew of in country had a laptop....no other electronic other than SW radios and walkmen. I see that there are some geocaches (but most are EarthCaches) in Nepal. It would have been so cool to be a Geocacher back then. Are there any ex-PCVs or current PCVs here in geocaching on-line land? It would be cool to hear from you and if you've cached in your host countries.
-
That is really neat. I wish more folks who performed service like that would post about it. I find it very interesting. Mac I was thinking of asking who else is a PCV in the off-topic zone...since you brought it up, maybe I will thanks (actually decided to ask in general topics and ask if anyone geocached while serving)

Does this mean we'd get prizes if we dug through the tennis balls in costume?
-
I think the OP said they would ALL have slits in them....not sure though...
-
What kind of dog doesn't care about tennis balls? Haha... and I was just thinking that a lot of folk cache with dogs....your tennisballs might start disappearing, or become a bit slime covered... I like the idea, glad you are going ahead with it!

You Found What Near The Cache?
thistleRacers replied to Lostby7's topic in General geocaching topics
Fjordi is from Austria, so a quick search on snakes of Austria (assuming the cache was in Austria too) seems to peg it as a Dice Snake...there are other photos of Dice Snakes eating fish....they are suppose to be smelly...are they? -

thistleRacers replied to Lostby7's topic in General geocaching topics
Other way round It does LOOK like a fish eating a snake though... -
When I go for a cache I sometimes read the DNFs first to see what happened. I also like noticing that someone had a DNF, then later found it. DNFs can be just as helpful to your fellow cachers as FOUND logs.

Muggles? Really? Can't we be more creative?
thistleRacers replied to ContactJack's topic in General geocaching topics
I was thinking about it a little more... I may be wrong, but I bet the use of the term muggle developed organically. Someone starting using it, others liked it and copied it....and it stuck. Trying to change it is kind of like trying to give yourself a nickname...it don't work. Being part of a group or community, sometimes you just go with the flow...but you don't have to...I'll stick with "muggles" for now until something else comes along I like better (I might try out CLAMs to see how it fits :-) -
Muggles? Really? Can't we be more creative?
thistleRacers replied to ContactJack's topic in General geocaching topics
When I first started I thought using the term "Muggle" didn't quite fit the scenario, but I AM a Harry Potter fan (well more of a Ron fan :-D) and liked using the term. I would go along with CLAMs shall we stage a coup? but I was also thinking that any synonym to "commoners" would work...such as "plebs"? "proles"? "bourgeois" or for short "bourg" haha LLAP! -

Your personal geocaching enviroment

I am in northeast GA, We are not a high lyme disease area, but the ticks are out in force, don't know where they come from sometimes. I have seen copper-heads and a number of black widows around fire ants scorpions The town south of my town had a puma siting last year that the DNR shrugged off...This year they had a black bear walk through...no photo evidence of either though. The biggest dangers around here though are college students and nanos -
Hmmmmmmmm, Is there good Que and are there caches???? What happens in Montana stays in Montana!

Actually, I think I am I played sports all my life, when I first started caching ( a few months ago) I wanted to get my (our) numbers up quickly, but life happened and we haven't been able to get out much the last 2 weeks... But I am the first person to accept a tie, or in controversial call or something in sport, I don't care...give it to the other player...whatever...but I am always out to try to give it a good show... I think that kind of falls into competitive AND non-competitive...or maybe it is just somewhere in between? anyway, I am definitely a hybrid, though I prefer when I am running on electric, not gas...

Unwanted Trade Items Placed in Cache
thistleRacers replied to GeocachingJoy's topic in General geocaching topics
just yesterday I pulled a full match book out of a very kid friendly cache near a dry dead log in the woods, what are people thinking sometimes?!? (and no there was nothing to roll and no tiny bong or anything in there with it, as i know many of you may ask if you are following another forum string....)
