  1. Understood. I didn't mean to sound like I was citing this particular instance. Obviously...I wasn't there.
  2. Ok, cool, I like that explanation. I take back the elitist comment. You're the only person I've ever seen use the phrase "outdoorsy nerds" in a sentence too, gotta respect that. I think we would get along fine!
  3. I should clarify something I left out on my earlier post... Although I said that cachers can be cliquish, and that I see it out here...I should say the overwhelming majority of cachers are wonderful people and are very quick to take newbies under their wing. I love events! I must admit, if I am just attending, I sometimes find myself sitting in a group of old friends and don't mingle as much as I should. When I am hosting, I try to meet everyone there, and make them feel as welcome as possible. Also, being a bit of a PITA in general, if I see a group standing off to themselves, and I even think they may be talking about me...I'll go right over and join the conversation. If they get really uncomfortable, then I'll know they were talking about me, and I'll stay longer!
  4. Sometimes you have to go down that hill if you want the truth. No one said it was pretty, but alot of us are tired of the false claims and accusations in the name of nicey nice. I don't recall you claiming it to be going down hill when the OP was taking pot shots at the members of a group (TRIGO) but when the members respond with fact about the incident it is considered going downhill? Sounds kind of biased to me. For starters...I don't agree with the tone the original post started out with. It was a bit accusatory IMO. However, the OP has admitted to carrying a bit of baggage that may have clouded his original perception. My next point is this...If you honestly believe that cachers are not "cliquish", then I think you are being naive. Out here on the Left Coast, there are several groups that are very cliquish, and many that don't like each other. Large gatherings will have many of those groups gathered amongst themselves and, yes, even talking and taking pot-shots at other individuals or groups. It's human nature isn't it? Everyone has a base need to belong. There will always be folks that are insecure and want to exclude others once they become part of the "in crowd." Then, there are those that will always feel left out unless they get a personal invitation. I'm not saying that either person is right or wrong...it just is what it is. The forums can be a bit cliquish as well. I see more of it in the coin forums...but it exists none-the-less. My last note is to say be nice to Amber! She is my sweetie, and I know where to find you if you are mean to her Jim!
  5. You've given me an idea...maybe, the beekeeper will give me a hive, and lend me a suit...I'd actually be willing to have a go at transferring the hive. I would of course video it for your enjoyment!...Seriously! I had seen the same report. It would be interesting to see what would happen...but if I was successful, then I would still be destroying the colony. It would be fairly easy to do though. The bees have been very docile. The only time they got aggressive with me was last night...after the 4th or 5th time the flash went off on the camera!
  6. If this is an accurate representation of your two options, then maybe the $175 will get you a better result than the $5. Seems like a lot of work even for $175. Do you know if that is what he would do? To an extent, that is what he would do. The bees are in an outdoor shed that I built. I have already removed the interior panel, and the entire hive is exposed. The hole where they are entering is easily sealed, and I will take care of that. Since I can see the entire hive, I could easily spray the bees and remove all traces of the hive and the dead bees without any difficutly. He said the removal is very straightforward at this point, since he can reach it without a ladder, and he doesn't have to do any work to get to it. He said for $50 I could buy a ready made hive, and he gave me detailed instructions on how to remove the combs and transfer them to the box! Not this cacher! The larger beekeeping businesses buy their queens from breeders, and don't want a rogue colony. There is a lady that can come down from Santa Ana on Friday, and she doesn't charge for the service. She does it just to save the bees, but told me she will accept a "Love offering." (I'm waiting to hear back from Harmon on that one!) Another cacher knows a local keeper, and he is going to see if he can borrow his gear, or get him to come up... Anyway, in case anyone is interested, I'll let you know what happens. I'll take some pics tomorrow morning and post them...along with our other nature project. We found a day-old sparrow hatchling and spent over an hour looking for a nest with no luck. I went to the pet store and got some baby bird food...and it's made it 3 days so far!
  7. This isn't caching related...except for the fact that having to deal with it is taking up time that could be used for caching! Does anyone know a good beekeeper? I've got a backet-ball sized hive in my tool shed at home, and don't really want to kill them. I found one beekeeper that really wants them...he is trying to add 70 new hives this year. However, he wants $175 to come remove them! (I have already removed the interior paneling and the hive is totally exposed.) Anyway, I know there is a serious decline in bees, so I am hesitant to kill them. But, a $5 fogger will take care of them...and I can't justfiy the $175 charge. Any ideas?
  8. I'll look forward to seeing that one! I'll make the trip back home to check it out. I haven't been back in town since 2000! (PRHS Class of 1980)
  9. Before we had our Mega event in February, I met with the Chief in Temecula, and an Lt in Murrieta. They both had their folks get familiar with the site so they could quickly check the site in case they had a call about a "suspicious" package. Well, just over a week after the Mega event, the Murrieta PD got a call. They blew it up anyway! I called the Lt the following week to chuckle about it, and he was upset that nobody checked the site. The cache was in a lone tree in the middle of a field...not a likely target. Well, I heard from someone on the scene that the bomb squad rolled out their new remote-controlled robot to detonate the device...so of course they didn't want to check the site, they got to play with their new toy! We had a good laugh over it, I contacted the owner, and she archived the cache. (I also told her she should seriously reconsider ever using cammoed pvc pipe again!) The good news was, with all of that commotion, the local papers never caught wind of it, the PD was happy to use their gear, and we still have great communication lines with our local law enforcement!
  10. You have been quiet in here lately! I saw an article that the bomb squad was called out in Atascadero over a geocache the other day. Fortunately, they figured out what it was, and there didn't seem to be any backlash.
  11. Lenore is correct! Travel Gnome! Here is a sample below, not sure what metal it will be in yet. There will also be a dark cousin: the renegade gnome! Pretty cute! Someone's been watching "The Amazing Race" and that little Travelocity Gnome!
  12. Never mind! I was scrolling through logs looking for a particular post, and I noticed that there were multiple posts by cachers for this cache. Now that I looked at it, all of the multiple logs were from April 2006. Sorry. This topic can be closed.
  13. I've seen several thread about this in the past...and I know that this horse has been beaten to death... However, most of the uproar over this had been events I had seen in Wisconsin. I was reading some other logs that I followed from a closed topic, and stumbled on this cache Here. It has now spread to the middle of the country! Nowhere is safe now! (It seems 16 logs per cacher...)
  14. Actually, I have a lampost hide called "Another Cheesy Cache". The cache itself is a magnetic altoid tin...but when you lift the skirt, there is a large rubber rat sitting there staring at you. Usually get's a response!
  15. I think it takes 2... One to remove the bad bulb... One to hold the new bulb in place with one hand, and then hold their gps in the other and calibrate their compass! (Those that have never made fools of themselves calibrating a compass on a Garmin unit may not get this.)
  16. Nobody has missed anything yet...I ordered samples, and we are waiting to pick finishes. I will post here once we are ready! Thanks for all the interest.
  17. I know what it is but I'm not giving the answer away I already gave it all away, actually it was guessed, I just confirmed it with a larger picture, look up above! http://www.mcescher.nl/Shopmain/ShopRoW/indexshoprow.htm http://www.mcescher.nl/indexuk.htm Did you pay or get permission for the copyright of these? If not I highly suggest you read this http://www.artquest.org.uk/artlaw/copyright/28920.htm. Gotta be proud when you create an idea that is so good that someone has to set up a sock puppet just so they can THROW COLD WATER ON IT. I know both UOTrackers and Hogwild Stuff appreciate open dialog, but it is always kind of frustrating when what is effectively another negative potshot comes from someone who is not willing to say who they are. I mean particularly something like this. But then again, if it were an honest attempt to be helpful I am thinking it would have come either in the form of an established account or a private e-mail. Leading me to believe this was done in an effort to be mean and hurtful which is shameful. Otherwise I challenge you to REVEAL YOURSELF! I don't know who the original poster was...but I followed the provided links... It is probably unlikely that anyone from the foundation would ever see your coins...but if they do, it looks like this may be a problem...
  18. So you don't think people should be able to use their coins the way they want? Would you want your car dealership to tell you how to use your car after they sold it to you? Why should it be any different with coins? If an owner allows it to be discovered than that is the owners choice! Folks should be able to do what they want with their coins...they are their coins after all. However, virtual logging is using the resources of the gs website...which you do not own. That is what is regulated.
  19. Yes...but we didn't plan on having it ready until after GW5... Although I didn't want to use the actual "Fonz" due to copyright issues...you will still know who it is.
  20. That would really stink, but with the explosion of caches out there, I would not be surprised. Most of the explosion of Caches are not in the ABDSP they are in the Off Road Area and BLM areas of Ocotillo Wells. If this becomes true, we (SDGeocachers) should meet with them and present some guidelines we Geocachers will abide by if we’re allowed to continue to hide and seek caches in the park. We could show them the agreements with SDRP and even arrange a CITO event to show we care about the park. I’m sure all those flower lovers leave trash just like everyone else. (I wonder if they would ban flowers from the park) It’s all politics and sometimes one has to play along. Anyone who has listed a cache in ABDSP has gotten a Reviewer Note from Marko Ramius that reads like this: Hello there. I just reviewed your new cache and it appears that it has been placed within the boundaries of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park (“ABDSP”). The following special guidelines must be met before a cache within ABDSP can be approved: 1. Caches must be placed within 50 feet of authorized trail. 2. No caches permitted within 200 feet of an historic or archeological site. 3. No caches permitted in, on or under any building, structure or manmade object. 4. Caches cannot be buried. 5. No cutting or modification of vegetation. 6. No modifying of geologic features, i.e., no moving rocks, hiding under rocks or creating cairns. Please respond to this issue by either posting a Reviewer Note to this page or sending me an e-mail at markoramius.ro@gmail.com. If you send an e-mail, please don’t forget to include the GCxxxx code for the cache. Unless I hear from you in the next couple days, I will archive this listing to remove it from the queue. But don’t worry, I can always un-archive it once the issues have been addressed. Thank you for your understanding and for your contributions to the sport. Marko Ramius Volunteer Cache Reviewer My understanding is that MR will not list any cache in ABDSP without the cache owner confirming that all of these additional guidelines have been met... Those are the same requirements we had last year. The biggest concern was the cairns. It turns out there are cairns created by Indians, and cairns created by geocachers. We don't want the Rangers moving our rock piles just because they think they are built by Indians, do we? Just hide an ammo can near the well established trails, and stay away from the Indians. We are lucky they are still letting us play our game out there. Let's try to follow Any and All guidelines they establish. Dang... I thought I was in the San Diego Thread...but some how I must be in a vortex that has taken me to the SO. Cal. web site??? Can any of you scientist solve this for me? Actually, if you stop and think about it, your post was actually more apropros of a So Cal forums post that Steve's was... His actually contributed to the topic.
  21. I am confused now, you said you were going aheard and please place your per-order and now you say you are waiting? Which is it? ***************Just to clear this up******************* We are halting our process until we have heard from the other designer and or their coin has come out. We will be producing it AFTER. Thanks to those who have emailed us with your orders, we will let you know when we will go forward with our design. SoCalGeocoins. Well, now I get to this post after I answered from up above... I still say you are under no obligation to hold production of your coin...
  22. If the other designer has a problem with it then it should be up to them to say so. I was going to wait until theirs came out anyway so they wouldnt get "hurt" on sales, as someone else put it. If the other designer wants to talk to me about it they can email me. Well, this isn't a normal post for me on the coin topics...but if you want to make it...then make it. I know folks have posted their ideas for coins in the past, and had someone else race in and scoop them...and I would never support that. However, in this case, you seem to have just been unfortunate enough to have someone else slightly ahead of you. You are under no obligation to stop making yours, and you don't need to wait to release yours either. The market may not bear two similar designs, but you are perfectly within your rights to make the coin.
  23. Actually, this thread has jumped way off topic. It wasn't started out to argue about whether or not we should be allowed to express our opinions on designs.. We are talking about coins Jumping the Shark. As far as that topic is concerned...the Fonz has already removed his skis.
