Great looking cake! Reminds me of stuff I see on the Food Channel. What kind of swag did Andy find when he "opened it up"?

Back in 2004 when we first started caching my son and I were FTF on a cache in Florida. If I recall correctly it was our second or third cache that we had ever found. At that time we didn't even know what FTF was and we were just happy to find it slightly off subject - We have also found 2 Letterboxes that we didn't know what they were. We've joked about it saying that we were going to log it with "traded keychain for rubber stamp"

While I was out caching at lunch today, i came across an old car battery. And remembering this thread I pulled out my ever present LeatherMan tool and proceeded to disassemble it. Sure enough, there were hundreds of AA batteries in there. More than I could stuff into my pockets. . . . So, I will be making a cache out of it and calling it GotFreeBatteries. [Don't try this at home, I am a professional]

I use a magnetic compass that I clip to a belt loop. The compass part is about the size of a quarter and probably not as accurate as the $30 or even the $10 types. But when I'm in the woods and my GPS is pointing NW and not changing as I move, I can take a quick look at the belt loop compass to get a general idea which way to head. If I remember it, I also have a $10 Boy Scout grade compass in the car. Camper17

There was one in the Atlanta, GA area a couple of weeks ago Cache the Ammo Can. I think there were about 30 people. It started promptly at 10 with a couple of people walking in with coolers & boxes of snacks and door prizes. Went off right on schedule and then we were gone. We had a great time.

I did This one, Puzzle Cache. No, really... (GC117G1), this weekend. It is a 4/4 in Georgia and it will be a long time before I forget this one. Camper17

I can't see that that will make any difference. I only have to get out of the car with it my hand and stand beside the car - two feet from where it was on the dashboard, and it still does it! Just a thought, but maybe you are discharging a static buildup when you exit the car. Try staying in the car and see if it locks up when you disconnect the power. If it doesn't lockup after a couple of minutes. put the GPSr down and exit the car making sure you ground yourself. Then reach back in and get the GPSr.

Of course you can always go buy a new blank card for the Topo and switch when necessary

To delete POIs, you need to upload new POIs (a .gpx file with only one POI? or an empty one?). Or, use the newer version of POILoader and choose "Remove all previously installed custom POI's from your device". When I tried the "Remove all previously installed custom POI's from your device" command it didn't work, because I had renamed them to something other than POI.gpx (Silly trick). I had to mount the UBS drive (G:\Garmin\) and delete the individual databases to get rid of them. This may not exactly be the answer you were looking for, but someone might find it useful Camper17

My son (Seto The Sage) and I once did about 50 in one day. About 43 of them were on a few back roads near Lakeland, FL. But the best part wasn't the numbers, it was being able to spend the day with my son doing something we both enjoyed

I have a new Cache that I put out a week ago. So far only 3 people have posted logs and only 1 cacher has found it after repeated tries. But I know that at least 8 cachers have searched for it. I originally had it listed as a 1.5/1.5 because I didn't think it was that difficult. But instead of adding a hint, I just upped the difficulty rating to 2.5 . On other caches, I have received requests for additional hints and I go and look at the users profile to see how many caches they have done. If they are really new to Geocaching, I'll give them a nudge in the right direction without giving it away. I don't want them to get disappointed with the geocaching and quit. Or any other filter such as "within 5 miles", "Available", "Cache type", "When it was placed", "Who placed it". Any way you can run a filter in GSAK will get you exactly what you want to export to Cachemate.

Thanks for the response, but I was thinking more in the field and getting the current coordinates from the Etrex and feeding them to the Palm so that I can do Nearest Caches calculations, etc. Camper17

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend and a Palm Zire 31 with Cachmate installed. Is it possible to plug the GPSr into the Palm's USB port? I think the CachMate can use the inputs, but how many different cables/adapters would I need to get from the Etrex Serial to the Palm mini USB? Is there a single cable available? Any help would be appreciated. Pointing and laughing will be tolerated. Camper17

I met a fellow cacher at a meeting once who had a hat on with a Travel Bug number embroidered into it and the only way to claim it was if you had your picture taken with him and upload the picture with your log entry. Since this was one of the cachers that my son had seen in logs many times, he was eager to log Thorny1's Hat. - Camper17

FlygURL - Situational awareness is Rule #1. Be aware of your surrounding and don't get too focused on searching for the cache that someone can sneak up on you. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it. There are urban caches that I have done in the daylight that you couldn't pay me to do at night. And I'm 6'2, 200+, know Karate and have a CCW. Find a caching buddy and if he can't always go when and where you want to go, recruit some others into the Geocaching community. It's only a game and games are about having fun. I've only been caching for about 5 months but I've found caches in or near about 6 cemetaries. Some were regular, some micro, some virtuals. All nicely done. Usually I go caching with my 11 year old son, and when we do a cemetary cache I always remind him of where we are and to show respect. And at every single one that we have done we will linger a while and check out names and dates, etc. I'll point out how "those 2 were brothers who died in World War II" or "that child was only 4 months old when she died" or "that guy outlived 2 wives". When I die, I want him to plant a cache at my grave so that all my geocaching friends will have to visit and get a smilie in the process. Camper17

This one is actually about 6 feet OFFof the road on the sidewalk. I've opened another similarly covered and on the sidewalk, I just didn't have the gear with me at the time.... I'm not going to try to uncover anything in the street. I like this hobby, but it's not worth my life! Camper
