  1. Good morning all, I have recently got hold of a Dakota 20 and it seems like a great piece of kit but... the installed maps are shocking. As such I would love to install some better maps for caching. Can anyone hook me up with some detailed instructions on how to do so?
  2. This thread has been good to read. I have posted a lot of DNF's recently and cleared up a few too, but I never knew really what the etiquette was so this has been really helpful. I have fairly recently gotten into cache ownership too (I'm still pretty new to this) and upon doing maintenance checks I have seen signs of lots of searching and yet no recent logs, so presumably these are unlogged DNF's, pretty frustrating for me. Having said that a recent DNF on one of my caches revealed that it had gone astray and so lesson learnt from now on I will always log my DNF's and take pride in doing so!
  3. Eeek! Sorry Susiebear&co my most recent cache was exactly everything you hate! It was in ivy and had a clue which said 'ivy covered tree' in a wood full of ivy covered trees. I'm glad though that you managed to find it without too much of a problem. I will bare this in mind with my part 2 of the series and avoid ivy! I hate it too though as I suffer from contact dermatitis and ivy caches tend to be very well hidden involving much rummaging but hey ho it's part of the game isn't it? Spears.
  4. Well this has all gone a bit crazy! At the end of the day I am still new to this and so are the other family. I accept I make mistakes and no I probably shouldn't have sent that initial email, but it was well meant. I have received similar 'advice' in the past and felt it was a welcome...it was certainly not patronising, or at least not meant that way. Anyway the hostile logs for my caches have been edited I am pleased to say and in turn I have taken down that photo of my kids with the cache (incidently they had moved to a different tree to take that photo, so they were not infront of GZ.) Live and learn. Lol who emailed the other family by the way? I was hoping they wouldn't read this, my rant was supposed to get me a solution. Ah well. Now I'm off to bag me 500 caches in a month to rid me of this noob status!!!!
  5. Maybe I am being too sensitive. It's the comment about the wheels going missing on my most recent cache. It's unnecessary and hurtful given that this cache is personal to me..see title/description etc. It feels petty and spiteful. You are all right though, I will ignore them. I just get too precious over my caches!! I know how it feels to think of your caches as your babies. Mine are all fairly new (don't be fooled by some of the ones that my account owns- they are adopted over to me) and I try not to read any subtext into the logs. Example being the one outside my house. Some one commented that they ran into the owner of the house- who seemed confused- and then commented that I must have gotten permission from the people next door (the condos). At first I thought maybe they were accusing me of placing a cache without enough permisson. I thought about it for a few hours before doing anything. The confused guy was my landlord. I ran the idea past him and he didn't care (obviously not enough to remember that I told him about it) so I sent a quick note to the finders and let them know that I did have permission (in a very friendly way) and made myself a note to remind my landlord what I told him. That's it completely. I am just being overly emotional because it's a particularly special cache. I have asked them (nicely) to edit their log to prevent it putting off future cachers.

I just get too precious over my caches!! I think the wheels comment has to do with the area that the cache is hidden in. Is that a bad area. Just seems like a joke to me. That family might be like me, I never look at the name of the person hiding the cache. No that is the whole point. It's an area I grew up in and am extremely fond of. The area is actually pretty nice, very leafy and suburban. I can't help but see the comment as a stab at me, but I'm moving on!!!
  7. Yeah yeah, like I said in my post "rightly or wrongly". It was never a ticking off email just a "hi and as your new you might want to consider this...." I will relax but having a small number of finds does not give me less right to an opinion or to pass on my experiences.

  9. A couple of months ago a new caching family appeared on the scene. They were clearly bitten by the bug and were clearly working on their numbers. Great I say, however they have a habit of photographing each and every cache and more often than not including containers AND hides in the photos. I know this is not strictly against the rules but it winds me up. Anyway, I sent them a friendly email (rightly or wrongly) saying that this isn't really good practise and to give them advise to maybe photo the logs or the overall area instead. CO's like photos I said just not spoilers. I got a scathing response back which I have ignored. Now though every time I place a cache they go straight for the FTF (haven't managed it yet though) and then log derrogatory comments suggesting the area is unsavoury, or that the cache is a 'Quick cache n dash' despite it being a 3*. I'm being polite and diplomatic in case they read this but I am upset now. Should I delete such logs or just rise above it? It's just that I am proud of my latest cache and several long standing cachers have enjoyed it and then this family go in and suggest that their car would be on bricks when they get back. Grrr. Your thoughts please guys.
  10. Arrh yep done it now, thanks for the help. Does anyone know how long the reviewing usually takes as that is all we are waiting on now!
  11. Hi all, We are about to make our first hide, found the spot, gathered the cordinates.... but the coordinates we have are in this format 52º 38.xxxx' N 1º 15.xxxx' E. Does anyone know how I should convert them to a format that this website will accept?
  12. Hi all, I am looking to get my partner her first GPS for geocaching. Is anyone selling one in the UK at all? Price around £100 - £130. Thanks
  13. The Oregon 550 looks amazing, but may be slightly above my budget. I was aiming at maybe below £200, shame because that looks amazing Andy.
  14. Hi all, my GF is caching mad and we are currently using my phone as a caching device. I would love to get her a new GPS for her birthday in August. Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to models and where to purchase within the UK? Online or retail, I am in Norwich, Norfolk. Thanks in advance
