  1. Logged a DNF last night. Got too dark to continue looking. DNF's only add to my sense of accomplishment when I finally do log it as found. If you've looked once or twice before and then finally got it, it like defeating your arch-nemesis or something. Perfect records are noteworthy, yet often boring. It's the ups and downs that make things memorable.
  2. Thanks! No smartphone but I don't mind buying a new GPS. I think I have decided on the Garmin GPSMAP 64. Just a little over $200 and gets great reviews from several publications. We were premium members back in 2005 when we were active in the hobby. I'm sure we will be again.
  3. Hi all, Haven't geocached since 2008. We were pretty heavily into it for a couple of years and have gotten the bug again. Hope to start caching again in the next couple of weeks (when I can find time not working, disc golfing, reading, etc.) Our old GPS (Garmin) died sometime in the past decade lol, so we are looking for a new one around $100 or so. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks; we are really looking forward to caching again. Hope to see you out there! Edit: Having looked at some GPS models, I think $100 bucks might be optimistic (I think that's what we paid for our old one but again a long time ago), so any recommendations for around $200 would be great. Thanks!
  4. We pay because we enjoy the hobby. Something we enjoy is certainly worth a little bit of money to support it.
  5. Still serving. Navy submariner going on 19 years. Looking forward to retirement so I can geocache more
  6. As new cachers (55 finds currently) we obviously can't comment on trends, positive or negative. I can only say that in our short time caching, we have come across numerous micros in unappealing locations. Conversely, we have done some awesome caches, large and small that required thought, a hike through a nice park/nature preserve area or both. We have placed two caches, one is an ammo can on a favorite stretch of beach and the other a micro at one of our favorite museums. Neither is particularly challenging to find (though the micro is a little tough) but they are in places that are worth seeing and for us that is the goal, really. See a new place that is interesting, unique, beautiful, etc. and as a bonus, you get to log a cache. We can generally tell if we want to find a cache by looking at who placed it. There are a couple of people that we don't even bother with, as they enjoy putting micros in trashy urban areas which have nothing to make them interesting or even notable, except that they are trashy. They also like to stick micros in bushes, which we hate. It's not clever, you often damage the bush trying to find the stupid cache, and you are left with scratched hands and a 35mm film cannister containing a tiny scrap of paper. Great!
  7. We have created a list of favorites around our home territory of Hampton, VA. We really like this feature and hope more people will use it. The list is here.
  8. I swear I already know some of you from other boards. I hope you don't mind and we're not breaking any rules but 2WalkAs1 also types on one keyboard. You'll likely figure out which is which. This has been fun. It was Hubby's idea and he kinda had to drag me into it. The hunt is fun but it's the walking part, strangely, that hooked me. That and we're seeing the area we live in. Sure that park is just down the road or that museum. We lived in DC and rarely ever went to the Mall or any of the sights. Great, just what I needed, another messageboard.
  9. Just a quick hi from us. We are new cachers in Hampton, VA. Having a blast so far (we have six caches under our belt). All of our caches so far have been around our area but we head to North Carolina to visit family in a few days and can hopefully get in a few there. Marty & Cathy 2WalkAs1
