  1. Thanks so much for the help. We will be in South Africa. Ok, that is where I am as well. Download the opensource maps and have a look at them in Mapsource / Basecamp, see what you think. Of the three mapsets the Tracks4Africa stuff will be of least use to you in urban areas - they are not created for that purpose. Around here the Garmap stuff is considered the best for general navigation. Garmin do make a City Navigator product which I would steer away from - I have them on my 3760 (they came with the unit) and am not impressed. Too much missing data. I ended up having to buy the Garmap product as well. If you need more info please ask. I am only too willing to help.
  2. Whereabouts in Africa? There are several mapsets available, some suited to city navigation and others that do a good job of covering the offroad / hiking stuff. For city Nav look at www.garmap.co.za For the other stuff try http://tracks4africa.co.za/ I also use the free maps available at http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Well done iPajero !!! Great to have met you in Lesotho recently.
  5. I may be able to make it !! Hopefully I can arrange to take the Monday off, will keep you posted. Sounds like a great trip
  6. I like the idea of just providing a random 3 digit code for each coord if you are going to leave something at the bottom - may just use it myself. Otherwise counting portholes, ladder rungs, railings etc is a great way of getting divers moving around the wreck / feature if you don't want to add something to the ocean bottom. Just don't make it too much work, folk tend to forget to watch their air supply when preoccupied with tasks.
  7. I am also going through the motions of placing an underwater cache here in South Africa. One of the considerations that if the cache has not been found in a while ie there is not regular activity, the container / slate soon becomes colonised by marine organisms and this becomes part of the artificial reef. Any cacher who then finds the cache destroys the growth that has happened, no matter how prolific it has been. This does not seem to be a problem with containers placed in a freshwater environment. Just about the only material that marine life seems to avoid is copper ...... So I will do as my caching buddy did in this cache - http://coord.info/GC3856X Rather let them collect the info, continue the dive and enjoy the marine environment and then sign the log at a location on dry land. Cache maintenance is so much easier as well.

    Nice one Kasimani !!!
  12. It happens to me from time to time, the unit seems to "lose" caches. Re-booting does not work either. I now load my caches onto the SD card so that I can force a re-load, others have suggested it here in the past and it seems to work.

Congrats to the 4G's !!! Great to see you at the event last night too.
  14. Also be aware that if you load caches to the unit as gpx files they may not all be visible on the map, even at the highest zoom level. If you load caches as POI's, they will only be visible from the 50m zoom level.
  15. Well Ok, what I should have said was that if I use the GPX export function in GSAK and then import the resulting gpx file into Basecamp they show up as waypoints. Running the Delorme macro fixes the file so that they show up as geocaches.
  16. I had an issue when exporting Geocaches to Basecamp using the GSAK export function - they would only show up as waypoints without the cache info. What I do now is: 1: Export the caches from GSAK using the built in GPX/LOC function. 2: Then use the DelormeGpxfix macro on the file I have just created using the abovementioned function.
  17. Here is one on my side of the pond: Born in the USA - Di(v)ed in Cape Town

How did we all miss this ??? Cownchicken reached 2900 !!!!
  19. Thanks for the screenshot. I may consider one of these and perhaps sell the 3760. Pity the 14xx series don't do portrait mode or have a powerd mount. But I guess you can't have it all .....
  20. @ sussamb - do all of the favourites show regardless of how close together they are on the 14xx series? Which model do you have?
  21. Ok, thanks for the clarification. I'm sure it will hep someone else to make a decision as well. But the favourites thing will still work for me if I don't travel more than say 600Km from home - there are less than 1000 caches available in that range. Plus I could do a "caches along a route" selection. And more sd cards are also an option, so I guess that I could make it work ......
  22. When I bought my 3760 I never even thought to check that POI's were going to show up - they do on my Oregon 450 and 60Csx - I just took it for granted that they would. I almost returned the unit as I was so dissapointed regarding the "missing" feature. But then I used it to navigate to caches loaded as POI's that I kept it - the display is awesome, just what my eyes needed. The real pain is that it is almost essential to keep a papre list of the caches that you want to visit for the day or look them up on the Oregon 450 if you want to see a map. sussamb thanks for the confirmation on the 14xx series - perhaps I should be looking at one of those 2nd hand for long trips and load all of the caches as POI's The POI's do show up as well unless you go past the 1.2Km zoom ? Is there a limit in the number of POI's the unit will accept? Lieblweb I am going to try out the trip planner thing and see how that goes.
  23. GSAK will load caches to the 3760 as POI's - but you will not be able to see them on the screen until you are zoomed in to 50m. I use a GSAK macro to do this. Not even the built in POI's on the City Navigator mapset that came with the unit show any POI's until the 50m zoom level is reached. You can load them as a GPX file and they will show up in your favourites. You will be able to see most / some of them on your screen (if loaded in gpx format) as you drive unless they are too close together in which case only a few will show up. They dissapear after you zoom out to beyond 1.2Km Also bear in mind that you will hit the limit for waypoints on the unit at some stage. I bought a 3760 a while ago and am somewhat dissapointed that not all of the caches (or any POI's for that matter) loaded as POI's appear on the screen. Not what I wanted - I was hoping to be able to see which caches were coming up on the road, especially on long trips. But it doesn't work like that. From the Garmin Website: The nuvi 2200, 2300, 2400, 3700 series units and the LIVE 1695 will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites and any custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. You will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer to view the custom POI icons. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not be displayed on the map as icons with the previously mentioned series of units. All other nuvi series units will display the preloaded points of interest icons on the map in addition to the saved Favorites and any custom POI files that were installed. POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up. Points of Interest will show depending on the zoom level. The further out the zoom level, the fewer Points of Interest will show. The nuvi 2405, 2505, 3400, and 3500 series will only display POI icons when you have that map layer selected. For more information on map layers, view the following article: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={dc9ee940-c9f4-11e0-cf56-000000000000}
  24. Many thanks, simply clearing the browser cache seems to have done the trick !
  25. After updating Firefox to 10.0.1 the cache pages show up as shown below. I haven't seen this problem raised before so I assume it is something at my end. Can anyone shed some light on this please.
