  1. We just came back from a month of travel in Germany and Denmark. The typical caches in Germany, at least in the Berlin area, are quite a bit more complicated than the usual ones in California, where we are from. There are quite a number with complicated puzzles, games and factoid problems, where data must be gathered from web sites, compiled etc. before finding the coords. Also, there are fewer satellites in Berlin than other areas, making coverage a little spotty at times. We use a Garmin e-Trex Legend. Most caches are in German, with only a few in English, so that presents a challenge to those not speaking German. We were lucky to have a native German speaker with us, and Danish is similar enough that we didn't have too much trouble. Denmark was more consistent with our California caches. Most were placed in beautiful geographic or historic places, with cache descriptions in Danish and English, making caching there easy and enjoyable. The caches were pretty easy finds, at least the ones we tried, and there seemed to be a cute little signature way of covering the on-ground caches with straw or hay swirled in a birdsnest fashion, which made discovery simple, once you realized the technique. I must say that caching in both those places enhanced our vacation travels and made the journeys that much more interesting, as it took us to spots we otherwise would not have seen. And that's why we love geocaching so much!!! KG3
  2. This person has obviously created a new profile from which to claim his exploits. A person is unlikely to be able to 'steal' 156 TBs in one day if you just started. He's been at this for some time, working up to his 'announcement.' GC.com will likely have some additional background info on the dude and can tell him to return the items in the proper way, or ????? Is this just limited to Colorado?
  3. Okay, got the page completed and approved. Here's the waypoint: GCNN6D Thanks for the help. Of course I need to go in and clean up the picture, but the instructions worked great. Only hangup was that the server was Soooooo slow that I ended up uploading the pic twice, as I didn't think it transferred the first time. Anyway, great to have the forums for this kind of stuff. Thanks for your help!!
  4. Thanks! You're all such a great resource. I'll try this as soon as I have a minute. I'll come back and post my resulting efforts.
  5. Wait a minute, I'm reading your note again, and it looks like I can upload the images to GC.com, then see the URL when viewing the image log, then cut and paste that within my description?
  6. So the images I want, that I've taken, I need to post on an independent server and list the URL to those images within the HTML in the description?
  7. I haven't been able to successfuly upload cache location pictures WITHIN the cache listing, in HTML, as some have done. (See Ardenwood, GCHHY7 ) for an example of this. Oh yeah, I can upload pictures to the log entry. But not to the listing of my cache page itself. These would be on cache pages for my hidden caches. Not others' caches I'm finding or logging. Any clues? I've tried embedding in the HTML. I've tried uploading prior to the description of the listing. Nothing works consistently, and sometimes it works, but then doesn't later. Thanks.
  8. I'm thinking about a cache that has a math type theme, and I can't get the numbers to work using the typical GPS waypoints or the chosen mathematical theme for my cache. I want to know if I can put a combo lock on the cache, requiring the cacher to enter a three number combination, which will be easy to determine from the puzzle/clue given on the cache page. To make it easier for some, I could multicache the combination at an earlier or alternate micro location. Can I put a lock on the final large cache container? I've heard of some people doing this, to prevent pillagers of large caches in the woods. I've asked my usual local/regional reviewer on this, but he/she totally ignored my question. What thinks you all?
  9. We planted a small section of black bamboo, that doesn't spread like the other green and yellow ones, in our backyard. The first year, we got 3 sticks from it. After five years, it has grown/spread about twice the size (in yard area covered,) but directly from the small planting area, not by sending shoots. It makes the most lucsious of walking sticks because the black bamboo gives it a very rich feel. We blacken the trimmed branches with a magic marker and sand it a little so it's not to sharp where we've trimmed the branches off. We also put a rubber cane tip on the end. Some we add a hose clamp with a section of nylon strapping to the top to form a handle for better downhill gripping. You can take a broom clip, like the kind used in a closet to hang a broom, and attach mirrors to the bottom, the better for exploring hidden rock openings etc. before reaching your hands in there to potentially retrieve a cache. Happy caching!
  10. Yes, I agree. My experience has been similar. Especially on weekends and Sunday nights!! I think the latest 'improvements' to the site may have added some functions which consume more horsepower and consequently slow things down on the processing/throughput from the GC.com server environment. Has anyone heard any comments/replies from the tech side of GC.com?
  11. Okay, lurking here until I compose my questions and find the right forums. So sue me.
  12. Yes, this was my thinking also. I recently posted 5 caches, all slightly different. I posted the last cache as a SOC because it was in a public thoroughfare, but in a residential historical setting, and I wanted to see what the differences were in the posting functionality. I experienced that no one has even tried the cache! Despite the convenience of the location and what I perceive to be the interest (Maybe my bias is showing . . ) I like the log visit function, and was amazed at how many people logged into the page, and how many return visits, etc. That was facsinating. (Again, maybe I'm facsinated by stats ) So after this forum string, and seeing people's thoughts, I converted to a MOC and still no action. Okay, I'll wait and see. All my other caches are getting what I would call a normal amount of action. So, just watching, learning, trying, etc. Thanks for all the help and perspectives. Really valuable for newbies like me/us.
  13. Thanks so much for the great responses. This provides a good perspective for me. I just knew I'd get the answers. Thanks!!
  14. Hi, I'm a relative newbie and interested in learning more about the culture of geocaching. I live in a very active geocaching area and I'm noticing things in some of my experiences and don't know quite how to attribute these things. Is it me or is it the culture, or is it???? I'm wondering when it's appropriate to list a hidden cache as a member only cache? What criteria, rule of thumb, do you use? Do people get offended at this? What are the advantages to the hider? To the finder? To the location? Just curious. Thanks.
