  1. I don't think any of these examples would be allowed now. Years ago I found several caches where you signed some physical part of the cache, but the rules changed a few years ago. The key words are "replaceable" and "enclosed within a container."
  2. The cache owner didn't actually say he "shouldn't" claim a find. Just that he didn't find the original container. I agree that it doesn't matter much, but if I initially logged it as a find I wouldn't have changed it.
  3. That is so cool! Best part is, it is in my area! I hope to get out there this week. Got to be a record unlikely to be broken.
  4. Wait, you say that like it's a bad thing...
  5. I had some very unflattering things to say in response but I will limit it to this: You do not know "what caching is all about." "19 in 20 cachers who are not premium" do not know what they are doing. This becomes more apparent every year. It was actually entitled attitudes like yours that moved me towards making all my caches PMO's some years ago.
  6. even if you could do it. Even if you convinced yourself it was OK. I guarantee finders would not put it back correctly! You would have to be out there every other day moving it from the bottom, or the outside, or some entirely unrelated object back to where it was intended to be.
  7. This is interesting. It would be encouraging if I weren't so cynical. Recently I considered starting a thread asking if this was STILL an acceptable maintenance plan, as I have seen examples of this within the past two years or so in CT, TX, NV and NM. Has the original PT cancer that started this whole thing been archived yet? I haven't looked at it in awhile. Maybe I'll start posting NA notes on strings where the perpetrator has explicitly stated that they are not going to maintain their caches. I'll report back! Maybe the rank and file does have a way of clawing back and getting rid of some of this stuff. Like working together to clear a wetlands or river basin of invasive species! Could be fun...
  8. Wow, there have been a lot of them! Maybe the most memorable was a virtual that had been moved. It was very large and very pretty. After my dnf the following logs showed up: One claimed a find because he "knew where it had been." Another claimed a find because he "Knew where it went." (He was wrong.) I later came across it by accident and claimed a find because I knew where it had been AND where it was currently...
  9. Power trails have definitely curbed my enthusiasm for the game. I haven't quit completely but I know several cachers who have. I visit several parts of the country frequently and it is discouraging to see the increase in green slime trails on the maps every time I plan a trip. Sometimes I just shut down my computer and then MAYBE I'll fire up the iphone app for a couple of random caches when I get to the area. Also, I don't try to introduce anyone to the game anymore because I find the maps embarrassing. Another point, (and I admit this is vain and superficial) I don't want to be associated with that image. I don't want people who know about geocaching via powertrails to think I'm part of THAT game. This condition ABSOLUTELY is the fault of HQ. At one time they prohibited powertrails and they could do it again if they wanted to. I'm afraid the truth is the game has changed and I am no longer part of the target demographic.
  10. From the Daily Current, an article about a rail tunnel from California to Hawaii: According to election officials, Proposition 49 — which would use public money to build a 2,600-mile-long undersea rail tunnel between Honolulu and Los Angeles — passed with a resounding 78 percent of the vote. The tunnel would be 185 times longer than the longest undersea tunnel in the world, the Seikan Tunnel in Japan. The total cost of the project is estimated at $587 billion and barring any court challenges construction is expected to begin in 2018.
  11. works for me using chrome. FWIW, I will never use Edge because it tries to hijack my start page with popups saying it is safer, faster, prettier, etc. As far as I'm concerned it is malware.
  12. I like it! Sure, there are other ways to get pretty much the same information, but this is an easy way to find some stuff all together. Checking out the old caches reminded me that I need 3 months in 2000 to complete my "caches in every month" and now I'm figuring out how to get to them. Especially during a cold week like this one I am inclined to do more reading about caching than actually going out. Your website provides some nice fireside reading. Thanks!
  13. 13 years ago when I first started there were some disagreements with the reviewer regarding whether or not certain areas were off limits. There was even a higher up from headquarters who got involved who at one point said, "The answer is 'no' and I don't have to tell you why." Eventually that got worked out. (The answer was "yes" and he did have to admit it.) For the past 12 years, though, my reviewer has been great. Caches are published promptly and concerns are expressed and resolved promptly and professionally. Thanks for the great work, NYAdmin!
  14. HAHA! loved this comment. As an aside about promotionals in general, I just got a "discovered" log on a Jeep TB I had on my follow list. This one had a log from the person who got it in the mail, who apparently kept the $1.49 toy car, and sent out the cardboard tag that came with it. That proxy promptly disappeared and then was "discovered" more than 10 years later. Some of those Jeeps actually traveled a bit before disappearing, but that was when the game was young and cachers didn't know that they were supposed to just keep them and maybe bring them to events to "share" with others
  15. you can also go back and delete your "write note" log as it now serves no purpose
  16. Had to laugh at this. I encounter it every day. At my current job, one task that I used to accomplish with a red line and my initials now takes 17(!) mouse clicks to achieve. EVERY time I do it!
  17. I just got an email saying I had not been chosen for a TB. It was nice of them to let me know personally.
  18. Yes, I believe it's a trend. One personal consequence for me is that I no longer try to introduce geocaching to anyone. I find the maps with their long green slime smudges embarrassing. I find I can't really explain why anyone would do that. I can still find quality caches on my own, but if I were just beginning to look at geocaching today, I doubt that I would find much appeal in the game.
  19. I am also quite pleasantly surprised at this news. Let's wait and see how the new ones turn out, OK? And then we can start bashing Groundspeak if the experiment doesn't turn out to be the most brilliant thing since a can of beans in a bucket.
  20. It worked for me two minutes ago. I filled out the form and requested a game piece. I also looked at a map of active pieces. There are only three in the USA, all in Washington state. One appears to be in a cache, one it's unclear where it is, and one has been "discovered" at an event but not placed in a cache (I used Google Chrome)
  21. I don't think this will hurt geocaching. During the Jeep promotion (over four years) the TB's disappeared pretty fast but it didn't really affect the game. I managed to find a few each year and moved them along. I remember stories of people at events proudly displaying dozens of Jeep TB's they had stolen collected and people logging them saying "thanks for sharing." I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing with these. I think geocachers might be the only ones who DO move them along. Certainly people involved in "Magic" will just keep them.
  22. I placed a couple of these blinkies 10 years ago. One in a park in Manhattan which was well received and another near where I live in Long island which only a few people found. After I archived those two I never had any interest in placing them again. I still find them pretty often. I won't go looking for them specifically but I'll find them if they're on my route.
  23. I've lost a couple, but my favorite story was of a near miss. I walked about a quarter mile on a clear trail from parking to a nice large cache. My wife called as I was going through the stuff inside it. I carefully replaced everything and, still talking on the phone, started back down the trail. When I got to my truck I realized I didn't have my GPS. I retraced my steps looking carefully at every inch all the way back to the cache. Nothing. gone forever. Unless... As a last resort I opened the container, and there was my Xplorist, which I had carefully placed on top of the swag before I put the lid back on!
  24. I would have written up the encounter in my "found it" note and maybe sent a private note to the owner as well. Not sure about the NA. I don't know the laws in WI but most places cemeteries allow public access. If I were the cache owner I would want to know about this and I might go and have a personal chat with this "caretaker" or whatever, and then maybe another conversation with whoever is responsible for the cemetery about hiring people who threaten members of the general public. But you seem like a much nicer person than I am so I hope you will just move on and not give up on this fantastic activity! You are exactly the type of person we need in the game!
