  1. Just like birddog14 said you can use the %code tag if you want the GCXXXX code the way it appears on gc.com. There are also many other tags you can use to create custom names. I for example use %typ1%con1%drop2 which gives the Type as the first character the Container as the second and the last 4 digits of the GCXXXX code as the last 4 (note that the GC just means geocache and it does not need to be there to identify your cache from all others, you just need the last for digits). This way when I look on my GPSr I can see right away the type and size of the of the cache I’m looking for (ie..TR1234 would be a Traditional Regular sized cache where as ML2345 would be a Multi Large sized cache). So defiantly take a look at the special tags section in the help file. damel, thanks for the response. Since I was using the "help" portion of the GSAK and not off the website, it was a little daunting and somewhat confusing. I appreciate the help. I understand that theres many different ways to have them displayed, it's just so much easier for us to do the GC codes. Guess we are stuck in our ways! heehee... Again, many thanks! We truly appreciate it. Lexie aka the "Mrs" of the Mr and Mrs Hydrogeologist
  2. Now that we can finally download waypoints to the GSPr from GSAK, I have a question. We want, on the GPSr, to have the GCXXX names as the waypoints; I keept getting the names. What do I need to do to correct this please? Thanks
  3. Clyde, Help! We have a problem sending waypoints from GSAK to the GPSr. We have a Magellan SportTrak Map Compaq computer running Windows XP Professional Purchased copy of GSAK and downloaded version of EasyGPS We have never, ever been able to download the waypoints from geocaching.com to the GPS on this computer. We have both programs, EASYGPS and GSAK and can't get it to work. However, I have EasyGPS loaded on my work computer, which is also running Windows XP Professional, and I have no problem downloading the waypoints to the GPSr. I know that the COM1 port works on the home computer. I performed the firmware update for the GPSr without any problems. I have check, double checked and triple checked the following settings, making sure that they matched on both the GPSr and the software: 1. Longitude/Latitude 2. Coordinate settings 3. Baud Rate 4. NMEA off Here's the error messages that we receive. First one from EasyGPS: ______________________________________________________________ No Data was received from the GPS! (Error #22) You should quit this program and turn your GPS off before proceeding. If you need technical assistance, please visit http://www.easygps.com/support.asp Details of this error have been logged to d:\program files\EasyGPS\EasyGPS_Message_Log.txt ____________________________________________________________________ Here's the error message that we receive from GSAK: Error sending waypoints: MAGPROTO: No Data Received from GPS ____________________________________________________________________ Needless to say, I have become extremely frustrated beyond belief. Yes, I could continue to take the GPSr to work and download waypoints, but that's not what I want to do, nor should I be doing. Can you give me some advice before I toss the GPSr and the computer out the window in a tantrum? I would be most appreciative Sincerely, "The Mrs" of Mr and Mrs Hydrogeologist
  4. We do have a PDA set up, and I will unhook the USB from the computer to see if that works, but I really don't think that it will. We still had the problem well before we started using the PDA to geocache. Will try the other COM ports to see if that will help as well. Right now, I disabled them to see if they were interferring with the COM1 port. We don't have MAPSend as far as I know. Again, thanks. Will report back with what I find.

  6. Thank you so much for the information. We will definitely get the PDA and see if we can get it set correctly!
  7. I am sure that this question is probably somewhere amongst the 11 pages of this thread, but I am getting lost in reading. Quick question. We have downloaded GSAK, and we have it working! (Great program, by the way!). We can get the dababase over to Cachemate and hotsync it to the palm. However, when looking at Cachemate, it lists all the waypoints by the Cache title and not the GCXXX, which what we like to use, or actually a combo of both. To get it to the GC format or a combo thereof, is it a configuration that we need to set throug GSAK or is it Cachemate? If it's GSAK, then how do I do it? Again, GREAT program! We are so glad that we invested the money in the software! Beats all the paper we kept dragging with us, leaving in car, etc. Now our next task is to figure out how to get maps to the thing.. but of course, one thing at a time. Thanks in advance The "Mrs" of Mr_and_Mrs_Hydrogeologist
  8. Thanks everyone for your responses. We went ahead and logged the cache as a find; and we wait for that ever elusive response from the owner. ____________ 39 days since we started caching and we have 52 finds! What rush! What a great sport! I am SO glad that we got involved
  9. I have a question that's probably been asked and answered before, but I can't seem to locate an answer. We went out this past weekend and one of our cache's was a virtual. As part of the cache, the following was posted in the description: In order to log this virtual cache, please email your answer to this question - Please do not include your answer in the logs, even if it is encrypted. Our question is: We answered the questions via email as requested, now, do we wait for confirmation from the cache owner before logging, or just go ahead and log it? We are not sure what we need to do. Thanks The "Mrs" of Mr and Mrs Hydrogeologist
  10. Well, technically, we are not married yet, so Mr. Hydro lives on the West side and the soon to be Mrs. Hydro lives up in Tomball. But Mrs. Hydro grew up on the West side of town (West Oaks area). And we are VERY new to Geocaching!
  11. Thanks for the info! My orienteering skills are rusty (at best), but I guess it's time to break out the ol' Brunton and see what happens.
  12. Hello Everybody (and upfront, I apologize if this is a redundant question), Mrs. Hydrogeologist really wants to give this a go; and yes, I'm game. I have a receiver, etc. My question: Are there folks out there that do this without a gps? And if so, a discussion group? Many thanks for any insight! H2OGeo
