If you are using the official geocaching.com app, I had that issue and neither restarting the phone nor updating the app worked for me. I was able to fix it by uninstalling the app, then re-installing it. After the removal, it all worked properly for me. Though as Keystone said, let us know which app you are using, it may make a difference.
  2. Hello all, I've just changed my avatar and it was a bit of a hoop jumping exercise. I set my original avatar with a photo from my phone via the app. My experience may vary from others, but here is what happened to me from my laptop: When I went to my profile here to update it, it kept coming back with an error and tried to take me to the home page. The error was "an error has occurred" with no other information. Then I went and had a look in the avatar testing and instructions thread to see what I was doing wrong. The instructions on the first post seem to be out of date and require updating. Unless I've gone seriously mission-blind (entirely possible) but none of the instructions listed on that first post matched up with the available options on the site today. Not a huge surprise considering that it's from 2007 and as far as I can tell, hasn't been edited since (mods might have an "edit without flagging as edited" option though). I had a look through a bunch of pages starting from the end to see if there was a newer set of instructions - if it was there, I didn't see it. I went back to my profile and updated the cover photo (yay!) but no matter what combination of format or image size I tried, I couldn't update the avatar. Despite there being an "update your avatar" option listed, along with some size guides. Finally, I emailed the new avatar to myself and updated it via the app on my phone. Worked perfectly, straight away - and was then visible on the website via my laptop browser. Not sure if anybody else has encountered any issues updating their avatar via a browser, but if the system is fine and it's just me, I think it's still a good idea for the first post in the avatar thread to be updated. Or at least marked "correct as of August 2020" if it's right and I was doing it wrong.
  3. Updated information for Australian resellers list: Geo Stuff: business is active. Caching Supplies: business is active. 101 Geo: already identified as redirecting to Caching Supplies. Geo-What: I used their "Contact Us" option on 5 June, no FB or other way to contact that I could see. No response - possibly suspended trading? Australia Wide Badges: business is active. Ground Zero: business appears to still be valid from looking up the Australian business number, but website is down. May be having temporary issues, or may have closed up?
  4. I'm completely agreeing, with all your points. Poor wording on my part in my earlier posts, they read like I am advocating for charging a hiding fee. Just be clear: I am against charging the types of fees I described, though I do see how fees could be one argument in favour of trying to force people to be more responsible. As you have stated, the fallout of such an idea would be fewer new players and caches to the overall detriment of the game as a whole. I assume that is one of the reasons such a system has not been implemented.
  5. Or won the lottery? From my limited experience, the ammo can / shoebox size seems to be about the biggest which has ample space inside while still being small enough to hide in a relatively urban area. I've yet to wander off into the back country out here and check out the caches available where feet rarely tread. Might need to convince Mrs. 473 that an off road vehicle is a good investment. For safety... >.>
  6. As I said, I'm not a fan of "pay to play". Especially for something like this where if somebody wants to put out a nice gadget cache, there is the materials, time and as you said - maintenance. It all adds up. But in that same vein, the type of person that goes to the trouble of putting together a quality cache is also the type of person to keep an eye on it and take a bit of pride in it. I think that the idea of "paying a bond" or "buying a license" to be allowed to put out caches has some appeal to try and remove the "drop a pill bottle in the bushes" brigade... on paper. In reality, a game like this lives on new people coming in to replace established players as they stop playing (injury, illness, family issues, lose motivation, etc). Ah yes, good point. I knew that, thank you for reminding me. So if there was a situation where the cache was in an obviously decrepit state, multiple NM and an NA or two, a non-active CO and the Reviewer had archived it … that would qualify as abandoned litter? Stick it in the CITO box. Now I'm sad again.
  7. I propose a small amendment - that the mosquitoes and such be required to go munch on the jerks!
  8. As much as I'm against "pay to play" games, this is one of the arguments in favor of asking people pay for co-ordinates (either by a membership, or paying for the app or a fee per cache listed - which could be refundable when archived). If people have to put money up, then they tend to care a bit more. Personally, if there was a cache with multiple NM and NA reports and the Reviewer asked me to retrieve the remains for proper disposal, I'd be more than happy to do that. Much better to remove litter and poor condition caches from inactive CO's rather than discouraging old players and disappointing new players. The key is that people need to make those NM reports.
  9. Is that seven different trackables with seven unique codes for $25? That's a pretty decent price, about $3.50 per trackable. Cries in AUD
  10. Whoops. Hopefully not another six year hiatus!
  11. I'm having this issue, I thought I might have accidentally toggled a "hide caches" setting in the app but I can't find any way to turn it back on. And it wouldn't make sense to even have that as an option. I did the usual turn phone off then on again and then updated to Version 8.28.1 but it's still doing the same thing. :/ Edit: Thanks @Moun10Bike, that fixed it.
  12. I really wonder about some people. If they wanted to do that, why not just buy their own TB that they can carry with them?
  13. I had one cache that was in a relatively high muggle area where I was looking for about fifteen minutes or so (it only felt like two hours) and just as I was about to give up, I found it. Uh … I've never done that. Nope. Not me... I can see that happening a lot. So far, out my huge total of … uh … nine finds, I've had one that could have wandered up to a hundred feet (capped pvc pipe in woods) and one that had to be put back in the exact spot it came from, otherwise it would fall out (it is in a crevice in a cement overhang). The rest could all suffer from a bit of creep, but none more than ten to twenty feet or so.
  14. People like that make me sad. Why can't people just be nice?
  15. And here I thought I was being sooo original when I thought up of this! I made a few the hard way, went online to see if there was an easier way to do it and/or make them better. Then I found out there was a whole industry devoted to custom poker chips. Who knew? I'm still working on my aluminium etching skills, but I've put in an order to my local library to get some little coins 3D printed. They charge pennies for what I'd be getting (they have a $6,000 3D printer) and 3D printing would be perfect for custom swag items (especially if you make the extra effort to paint them) though I can't justify spending even a few hundred on buying my own machine (no matter how much I want one!) My opinion? If you have a technique that you like (one "easy" way to make medallions is to buy a bunch of coin capsules, paper print an insert and fill it with epoxy resin) that lets you make a handful at a time so that you can refine and improve your design to what you like. I plan on putting the month and year on my stuff, so if it somehow ends up in circulation for a while, people can see how long it's been in play.
  16. Edit: bad idea, ignore me. I suppose for the type 2 armchair / archeo logger types, that style of play could be good for people who either have mobility issues or used to be physically active but something happened and now they can't go out caching any more.
  17. At the risk of being bopped on the head for going against cerberus1: on the Premium members features page, it says Archived caches keep their Favorite points. You can choose to remove a Favorite point from an archived geocache to award it to a new one. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that archived caches were effectively "removed" from the system. So if a new player like me comes along because we heard about how awesome cache XYZ was but it's been archived - then I can't see it on the map, log it, interact with it or even find any information about it. Unless I was particularly motivated to specifically look for it. In which case, the favourite points (or lack thereof) wouldn't really affect me. Either I can't see it / know it exists; or I am already aware of it and specifically making the effort of looking for it.
  18. I have no skin in this, so I'll stay out of the main conversation. I just wanted to say that I'd love to be able to say "I have people to do that".
  19. Totally agree on that one, and not just geocaching. Everybody seems to be in a great big hurry to get to where they aren't and ignore where they are now.
  20. I was able to get out to a few rather old ones today, that had new logs in there but still had the old logs and were readable. Was pretty cool taking a moment to read back on some of the comments from so many years ago. Makes me wish more caches had space to write a thoughtful comment instead of just a name and date (not sure what the percentages are around here, just the 8 or so I've found so far had more micros and nanos than small or regulars).
  21. Maybe it's in the lead up to the next Amazing Race season, when filming starts again?
  22. I'm guessing he / she / it would just create a new account, assuming he / she / it only has the one account.
  23. I'm on Android as well. Main menu > Profile > Trackable Inventory > Tap "Log" for the trackable > Tap "Write Note", then in the note tap the photo icon in the corner. That's what I was missing when I was looking at my phone; I'd get as far as the options for what type of log to make, but didn't see an "add a photo" option. I needed to tap "Write Note" and add the photo from in there. Thank you!
