  1. GeoWoodstock VI Last count posted about a week ago shows over 2100 registered!
  2. When all else fails, read the manual I just checked and I can save as many tracks as memory allows. Base memory on my unit is 24mb - BUT, I have a 2gb card in it for my maps. There is an option to save my tracks to the card. Currently I have the entire North American Map Source loaded to the card but I still have over 300mb unused. That should take care of my three weeks of hiking
  3. Oops! double post but that's OK I can edit it for a question that just popped into my mind. I notice that you can save tracks on the GPSr (Garmin eTrex Vista Hcx). Is there any sort of limit? In the next couple weeks we are going to be hiking on the various Hawaiian Islands and it would be cool to see the tracks for each day when we get back home to the mainland.
  4. Cool idea! I always start the hike by waypointing the Jeep. After the hike I download the tracks and put them on MapSource to see where I went. It also tells you the distance and time it took. For the altitude I use the profile. BUT next time I'll do what you mentioned and overlay Google Earth.
  5. My log from yesterday's caching: April 25 by geospyder (2413 found) I drove over from Pole Line on the dirt road NOT the gravel/paved one. I parked the Jeep next to one of the power poles and then started hiking over to the cache. I heard a number of gun shots and saw smoke from the house to the south. I was hoping that they weren't shooting in my direction. Out comes a guy on an ATV and he suggests that I leave the area because the owners of the house to the south like shooting into the federal land and they don't want to hit anyone. Sounded like a veiled threat to go away even though it wasn't their land. I told him that I'd be out of there within 30 minutes so just hold off shooting. That was a strange encounter - just beware. Took nothing - left nothing. Thanks for the hide and the excitement.
  6. I carry this in my Geopack... Here are the specs from Craftsman: Lifts 16 lbs. and telescopes from 9 to 34-1/4 in. Goblet-shaped head shields sides of magnet from attaching to unwanted surfaces. 2-1/4 in. diameter mirror with metal base mounts in seconds. Cushion-textured pistol; grip will not slip in wet or oily hands. Double-angle ball joint adjusts 360 degrees and holds mirror in a desirable position.
  7. Head a couple miles west from my house and bears have been spotted. Head east, north or south there are no bears but there are two other dangers - rattlesnakes - no gun needed, just give them room. The second and by far the most dangerous are meth labs. In that case you better have a gun and hope that you aren't spotted because most likely you'll be outgunned. Yes, I have a CCW permit and I do carry in the desert.
  8. Thanks for the picture. It reminded me to put my binoculars in mine. One of those things you remember at an inopportune time and then forget again. Heading to the garage now!
  9. How do you hold the ticks? Tweezers or fingers?
  10. Started with a pair of Sam's Club special Yukon Charlies. This year we decided to upgrade. I ended up getting Tubbs Men's Mountaineers My wife got the Tubbs Women's Mountaineers. We are very pleased with our choices.
  11. I used to leave a small ziploc baggie of foreign coins but I've run out (note to self - take another trip). Now what I've been doing is bringing a small bag of Golden US Dollar Coins (get them at the bank). If I do take anything I leave the equal or greater value in "gold coin" in a small baggie.
  12. Warning - Slight thread drift. In my Geopack I have waterproofed matches in a waterproof match container. I also have a wad of 0000 steel wool. Strip out a little of the steel wool and place it between the poles of one of your spare AA batteries (you do have spares?) and that is also a good fire starter. Can't see anyone complaining about steel wool and batteries in a cache
  13. We are day hikers. In eleven more wake ups we are heading to Hawaii for a seven day cruise, three days post cruise in Honolulu and then another seven days on Kauai. Instead of flip-flops and snorkel gear we are bringing our hiking boots and packs. Especially looking forward to Kauai. There are a number of semi-remote caches we hope to snag hiking through the jungle.
  14. I put in my vote for the Wal-Mart pole. It is a staple in the back of my Jeep. Help the knees on the down hills and warns the rattlers ahead that I'm coming
  15. Furthest cache we've found from home was "Oh" No Darling in New South Wales, Australia. That cache is 7606.83 miles from home. Currently we have 241 finds that were over 1000 miles from home. 109 of those caches were over 5000 miles away.
  16. Two weeks from today we are flying to Hawaii and taking a seven day cruise between the Islands. After the cruise we are spending a couple days in the Honolulu area and then hopping over to Kauai for another seven days. We have absolutely nothing planned during all that time. We do, however, have a short list of 395 caches and have cars reserved at each port. Our sightseeing will be determined where the caching leads us. Seems strange to be going to the Islands and instead of flip-flops and snorkel gear, we're bringing hiking boots and backpacks. We get back home on a Wednesday. Thursday will be for washing clothes and Friday we head to California for GeoWoodstock VI. ....and it's not even summer yet!
  17. Costco is having a coupon sale 11/23 - 11/25. The Sanyo Eneloop kit described above will only be $19.99 with the coupon those three days. To give an idea how good that is, Amazon sells the exact same setup for $32.50.
  18. Now that is funny. When my daughter sent me the picture this morning, that is all she sent. She had no idea where it was or what it was called. Ends up it's just down the road from me (312 miles as the crow flys). I was within a mile or two of it last month but it wasn't on my list. It must be more than .5 miles from the highway we were on. Oh well - on our next trip to Las Vegas area this one will have to be on the list. That is definitely a unique cache.
  19. My daughter sent me this picture but there is no info other than the picture. Anyone know this cache?
  20. I second the poles from Wal-Mart. Inexpensive, collapsible and they are 'spring loaded' which helps the knees.
  21. GBES (Great Basin Eastern Sierra Geocachers) pin will be in the mail tomorrow.
  22. Spotted this quote in an article about the fires. Interesting concept if you have an answering machine in the house - presuming the phone lines are still alive in the area.
