  1. Dang - now I really feel young at 62.
  2. The basic yellow eTrex... Is it true that you can only manually load coordinates? What is behind the flap on the back?
  3. Taurus 605SS .357Mag. It's always in the Jeep. Have a CCW permit but have no real need/desire to carry unless I'm out in the desert alone. Just part of the survival gear.
  4. I've been helping a friend and new geocacher try to straighten up a mess where he ordered City Select and the dealer (not Garmin) sent him City Navigator. He has a Vista C and needless to say the City Navigator is not too friendly with the limited 24 meg that the Vista C has. Long story short, here are two sentences (with permission) from an email he received from Garmin today in response to his questions about City Select and City Navigator. "The City Select has been discontinued, and for that reason a lot of dealers are not carrying it anymore." "Now to let you know, next summer when version 8 is released, it will go back to the original map sets not larger than 5mb each, and all City Select customers will be transitioned over to City Navigator." BTW - the email also stated that they, Garmin, still have 1800 copies of City Select Version 7 in stock so it is still available for a short time.
  5. I'm too stubborn. Here is a log from one of my FTFs
  6. FTF? You get to really find it. There is no geo-trail to follow.
  7. OK - I'm confused. I chose two caches, neither of which I found. One was a 5/5 and the other was a 1/1. I ran these through the fizzymagic thing and here are the results: What are the following? 9 finds logged 2 multiple finds (22%) Multiple Finds: 5 finds claimed on GCG62F 4 finds claimed on GCQY40 Analysis of file C:\Program Files\fizzymagic\FromGSAK.gpx 2 unique caches. 9 finds logged. 9. My daughter, Microtaz, did Wait Until Dark as her number 100. I did my 100th while visiting my wife's family in the Netherlands. Number 100 should be something special.
  10. Don't know if it has already been posted, but I just spotted this in the news. High-Tech Hunt Gets Mixed State Response
  11. Just spotted this in the GPS Garage Sale forum Yellow Extrex Sale
  12. Check out Holiday Get Together & White Elephant GiftExchange happening this Saturday in Carson City. This way you can meet a number of the local cachers.
  13. I did a few caches in south west Reno area yesterday and was surprise to see a bear notice in one of the neighborhoods. It was a printed notice on the trail head (jogger/dog walk type trail) that said for two days now a bear has been spotted in the neighborhood. This is the Eastern Sierras and it was a good reminder to me that yes there are bears here. In a few minutes we'll be heading further up into a more remote area of the Eastern Sierras to snag two more caches. Hopefully no bears.
  14. Way simpler that I expected. Downloaded a couple local caches. Re-found a couple that I had already found just to check things out. Right on. Even beeps at you when you are close. Yah-yah – you Gramin people knew that but it’s new to me I then went for one I hadn’t found – again right on. Tonight I’ll be planning for tomorrow’s caches. Withdrawal is over!!!
  15. Here are two that I enjoyed last May. Both have English translations: Deja Vu Vesting - Cache
  16. Yep - read it all - thanks. My City Select v7 is scheduled to arrive Friday. I'm looking for any hints as to what settings, if any, to change that would make things easier on day to day usage. I've downloaded a number of caches and will try my luck tomorrow. Been going through withdrawal since I lost my GPSr last week. Only need 33 more by the 13th of next month to reach my 500 mark before my one year anniversary. Bad time to lose my GPSr and try to learn a new one
  17. I just received my Vista C today. Like Beefiness, I come from a Magellan Meridian Platinum. I can see that there is going to be a learning curve switching between the two. Along the lines of the original post, "Tips and Hints", any tips/hints/shortcuts etc. that you Garmin users can pass on to this Garmin newbie to help him get up to speed using the Vista C? I'm specifically looking for any setups that I should set to make things easier. I tended to use the compass go to funtion on the Magellan the most and hope to be able to do the same on the Vista. The use of this unit will be 99.9% Geocaching.
  18. When lost in the woods (or desert in my case) which would be more effective - three whistle blasts or three gunshots? I'm guessing my .357 might be heard farther than my safety whistle - both of which I carry along with other survival gear - just to be prepared.
  19. Very good point. That's why I asked for recommendations That made up my mind for the Gramin - thanks
  20. All four of our grandkids are into Geocaching with their parents. Was just thinking it would be neat for the two oldest (eleven and twelve) to have their own very basic GPSr for Christmas. But - which one? Two that come to mind are the basic Garmin eTrex and the Magellan eXplorist 100. Any recommendations?
  21. Since my Magellan Meridian Platinum literally bit the dust somewhere in the 15 miles between the last cache I found and my house, I no longer have need for the two MapSend CDs I have. I have placed them on eBay at a starting bid of 99 cents each. If interested, go to the following links. MapSend Europe Streets v4.10d MapSend Topo for the United States v4.20d
  22. I looked at the 60CS but I couldn't justify the extra cost...but had I known about being able to load both City Select and Topo at the same time it might have changed my mind. Oh well - the Vista C seems to have more bells and whistles than my Magellan Meridian Platinum had. I say had (past tense) since it is somewhere on the 15 miles of road between my last found cache and my house The Vista will be attached by lanyard NOT set on the bumper of the Jeep as I log caches
  23. I just ordered a Garmin Etrex Vista C and have started looking at the mapping software. This GPSr will be strictly geocaching. For those of you that have this GPSr do you recommend the City Select, Topo, both or none? If both, can you use both at the same time?
  24. So did mine - literally. It is somewhere in the 15 miles of road between my last find and my house. It was the last cache for the day so I didn't miss it until a number of hours later and then remembered that I had set it on the bumper of the Jeep I just ordered a Garmin eTrex Vista C as a replacement. It seems to have everything the Magellan had but in a smaller package. This GPSr will be hung around my neck - not set on the bumper.
