  1. Hi all, I've been really inactive for a long bit, and when I dug out my GM100 and put batteries in it, it powers on with a message "Waiting to download new program". Yes, I know it's somewhat of an antique as GPS's go, but it's served me well. I can't seem to get it out of that mode with any key sequence. I'm suspecting that the lithium backup battery inside has died, and the memory is wiped. Unless someone has a better idea, I'm going to crack it open and measure the voltage of that battery. Lowrance says nothing on their site any more about it, so I suspect they don't support it any more. I'm hoping they still have a copy of the firmware .bin file around somewhere, that if I can get it working again, maybe I can reload it. I am an electronics tech, so this is within my capabilities. I've moved somewhere finally that geocaching seems to be very active here, so I want to get active again. So, if any other GM100 owners out there know something about this, it may save me unnecessary surgery. Thanks all The Flying Dutchman
  2. /Lurk Off/ Hi, I've been interested for quite a while, but been unemployed/homeless quite a lot of the time. Have managed to find a few without GPS, typically 1/1's. I'm not sure, but this could be my first actual post. Have learned a lot from reading the forums. The Good Lord gave me two ears, and one mouth. I take that as a sign that I should use the mouth half as much as I use the ears/eyes. I've not felt strongly enough about most issues to say anything. There was a big hoo-rah going on a couple of years ago with the site administration changing things, and since I became unemployed about that time, I was gone from geocaching for awhile. I'm employed now, but owe everybody and his hound dog. So, it'll be awhile before I can afford a new GPS. Probably will be about as long before I can become a paid member here. Peace The Flying Dutchman /Lurk On/
  3. I used to have a cell phone until money got tight and had to drop the service. It used to be some years back that you still could dial 911 with a disconnected cellphone if you got into an emergency. Does anyone know if this is still possible, and if so, does anyone without cell service carry one with them. Especially on the wilderness/semi wild caches. My old phone is a Nokia 6120 that will do digital and analog. Should I carry it?
  4. Hooray, hooray, It's the first of May, Outdoor sex begins today. I'm not gonna say anything against these people, because I used to engage in such activity myself. Quite enjoyable to do what comes naturally out in nature, where my ancestors did it for hundreds of thousands of years. I'm getting a little old for that stuff now, but if the right opportunity presented itself, and if the Sig Other was willing....

  6. Another one of those places that are Garmin only. Wish some of you folks would realize that Garmin, big as they are, aren't the end all and be all of GPSr's.

  8. I beleive the problem would be called epidemic. Meth is Sooooo easy to make, it's become the speed drug of choice. Recipes are all over the internet. I wouldn't want to walk up on people 'cooking'. They're likely to be armed and in no mood for discovery.
  9. If you are out in the woods, and suddenly smell starting ether or ammonia, get out of there as quietly and quickly as possible. Someone nearby is doing a methamphetamine 'cook'. Very common in areas where anhydrous ammonia can be gotten relatively easy. This happened to me today, in Eastern TX, I won't pinpoint it any closer, but the county sheriff was notified.
  10. I'm pretty sure the EasyGPS program doesn't at this time support the GM100. We are definately in the minority here, notwithstanding that the GM100 is a very good GPSr for geocaching. I just print the cache pages I'm interested in, and manually set up a waypoint for them in the GM100 before I start the hunt. You can even name the waypoints per the naming convention used here. I may have read on here somewhere that the author is working on GM100 support for EasyGPS. At least when I try to use it, it does the same thing with my GM100 also [This message was edited by The Flying Dutchman on April 16, 2002 at 12:25 PM.]

I've never understood this 'drunken bee dance' everyone talks about in finding a cache. My Gm100 shows me graphically where the cache is in relation to me. Do you use waypoints and a zommed down map, or move the cursor to the coordinates and view a .1 or .2 map when you are close. I find for really close-in that waypoint names/numbers need to be turned off. My Gm100 walks me right to the direct vicinity of the cache
