  1. If you look for the caches by "Name" instead of by "Nearest" you will see that the caches are in your GPS unit.
  2. Here is a recent thread asking the same question. Edit to fix link . . .
  3. I have the Topo and City Navigator on the same card. Since I don't travel much anymore, I only got a 1 GB card. My Vista HCx makes route calculations quickly, as long as I don't request a very long, complicated route.
  4. This cache hasn't been found since November 2005 . . . This cache hasn't been found in more than two years. Both are located a long way from me and with the price of gas here, more than $4.40/gallon, I won't be heading either place anytime soon, however, there is a cache just three miles from my place that hasn't been found since December 2006. I guess it's time for me to finally look for it . . .
  5. There was a problem today and it was discussed over in the Web Site Forum. The PQs were held up, but they have just started working again.
  6. Whoooo Hoo! I just got the one I requested this morning. Thanks!
  7. I Export a .gpx file, using different "smart name" codes from those I use for the Waypoints, and use Garmin's POI Loader to send all the caches I have not Found, all the caches I have Found (divided by those that are Active and those that are Archived), all the caches I Own, and nearby Benchmarks to my Vista HCx. I put each of those separate .gpx files, along with a corresponding .bmp file for each, into an Update folder I point the POI Loader to.
  8. Welcome to the Forums! What kind of GPS unit do you have? What program are you using to send the .loc files to your GPSr? If you become a Premium Member, you can get "Caches Along A Route" with the exact criteria you want for specific roads you are taking.
  9. The PQ I requested this morning ran at 10:46:02, but as of this hour, it has not arrived in my Gmail InBox, although I am getting other GC.com mail just fine . . . Whasssup . . . ?
  10. Check out Garmin's "comparison page" for the new 'H' models that have the High Sensitivity receivers. You want to get a handheld GPS unit that connects to your computer with USB. I recommend the Venture HC, or Legend HCx. I have the Vista HCx and am very happy with it. Having the 'x' model so I can load it with thousand of POIs is an option I use a lot and might be something you want to consider. These won't have a "world-wide" basemap, but you shouldn't need that.
  11. Who is your ISP? If the PQs ran, they are probably being throttled or blocked by your email provider . . . Since I changed to Gmail, I have not had a problem getting PQs that run. Edit to add appropriate quote and to say I'm requesting a PQ . . . we'll see if it arrives in my Gmail account.
  12. Welcome to the Forums! The comparison page on the Garmin site is a good place to start. I recommend getting an 'H' unit that connects with USB if you are on a budget. The best, least-expensive unit in that group is the Legend HCx which sells for around $185.00 online.
  13. Welcome to the Forums! I would recommend the Garmin Venture HC. However, you could check out Garmin's comparison page to see the various options available on all their new 'H' (High Sensitivity) receivers. You want to get a Garmin that connects with USB. The one with the most options is the Legend HCx and it sells online for around $185.00.
  14. I have the same GPS unit and have the older Topo maps and City Navigator on it. As already stated, once the maps are installed on your computer, you can easily switch between them. Before sending them to the GPS, you select all the maps using the 'Maptool.' If you use Road Navigation to get to a cache, do a second "Go To" using the "Off Road" option before searching for the cache. If you aren't being Prompted for "Follow Road" or "Off Road" when you do a "Go To," you can change that in Menu/Setup/Routing. If you change to Topo maps for a hike, make sure you change them back to City Navigator when you return to your vehicle and before you ask the GPSr to "Follow Road." If the Topo maps are showing, the poor GPSr is going to try to route on the basemap roads, which can be a problem if you are a long way from a major highway . . . Welcome to the addiction!

    TFTC?

liar. @ flask, I am so glad you are back. On topic, I agree that people should really try to write more than TFTC in their logs. If they are not much of a writer, a simple "Thanks" is better. Recently, someone found several of my caches placed in a series along a rural road that offers fantastic views. I'm sure they had some sort of an adventure while making that drive, but each log was just "TNLNSL."
  16. Unless the scratches are really deep, getting an Invisible Shield and putting it on your GPSr, should make them almost completely disappear.
  17. I have three "challenge-type" caches and, although someone can go to the final container prior to completing the requirements, I haven't had the problem you are having. If someone did log a find without completing the requirements, I would delete their Found it. If they continued to log false finds and disruptive statements, I would continue to Delete their logs because, as in your situation, two of the three caches have had "successful achievers, as well as other ambitious cachers in the process of completion." It is not fair to them to allow a false find.
  18. When you load a new mapset, it deletes the previous mapset.
  19. I wish I could help, but I have a lowly Vista HCx . . . Over in the GPS and Technology Forum you'll find lots and lots and lots of info about the Garmin Colorado. Welcome to the addiction . . .
  20. The new "Hybrid" type batteries work very well. They are charged up when you buy them and they hold a charge longer when they are not being used. I bought four Rayovac NiMH batteries at Target for less than $9.00. A charger with two AAs and two AAAs was less than $10.00. Other people also recommend the Sanyo "Hybrid" batteries. Sometimes Costco has those on sale.
  21. I have put the "Invisible Shield" protectors on two GPS units and haven't had a problem getting those on "straight & smooth." Using a PDA screen protector, cut down to a size and shape to fit, is a less-successful venture . . . I highly recommend the "Invisible Shield." It is worth the extra money to avoid the headaches.

    Pocket Q.'s

When you create the PQ, do you Preview it before checking the day for it to run? If you Preview it, are you getting the results you expect? Does it show that the PQ has run? If so, your ISP could be blocking the file. My previously-reliable ISP started blocking all the Groundspeak domains, so I had to change my GC.com email to a Gmail account. Since then, I haven't had any problems. Check out Markwell's excellent tutorial for more information: Pocket Queries
  23. Whoooo Hoo!! :D Look who got on the Home Page:
  24. When I started caching, I had a bamboo walking stick. That worked okay for a while. Then I got an REI walking stick, but it would not stay extended if I had to really lean on it. So, I got a Leki walking stick that doubles as a camera monopod. I got it on eBay for a reasonable price. Finally, after completing a very challenging hike going up and down a lot of elevation changes, I bought a pair of Leki trekking pole at REI when they had their 20% off sale. Now, I don't go for a hike without those trekking poles. They are much better than a single hiking stick on lengthy hikes, or hikes up and down rough terrain. A friend who had a wooden hiking stick for 20 years now has a pair of Black Diamond trekking poles. He accuses me of making him "Bi-Polar."
  25. Current threads about Earthcaches that could be moved to an Earthcache Forum, if there was one . . . #1 #2 #3 There are probably more. These are just the ones I saw on the first page of other Forums . . . I bet an Earthcache Forum would generate a lot of interest.
