  1. I just posted a "found it" log on one of my caches to test the CO email. Checked my email and it came through just fine. Try the same with your cache to see if it works. Perhaps its a setting or something.
  2. Ive been working on this 2 liter container. I took one 2 liter and cut the top off as it curves inward toward the spout. I then fitted a carpet tube down inside of the bottom piece, sealing it with glue. I then took another 2 liter and cut the bottom piece off, shorter this time. This is to be the cap. I used another size carpet tube that fits down inside of the carpet tube on the other piece. This is also sealed with glue. Even dry it looks a little wet, as you can see on the 2 liter. Im going to bring the glue down a little bit to waterproof the paper. The container comes together pretty well, but in order to make sure it seals tightly I am going to use an adjustable clamp that will fit around the whole thing and pull it together. I am about to begin a testing phase for the container to make sure it will work okay. I just like to tinker with stuff like this, never know what your going to run into... Anyway, thoughts? comments?
  3. I have seen the thread on these containers before. All I can say is...wow... The rusted ones are really what gets me. And even if they did want to use something like that, there are all sorts of spray ons you could have protected it with, of course you still have to get past the fact the thing doesn't seal well. I seen a peanute butter container in our area that works well. They keep an eye on it, not my personal favorite container though. I would have to do something interesting to it... hehe
  4. I was looking to perhaps use some of the things I would normally throw away for cache containers. While I realize you have no way of knowing all the things I would toss, I was hoping to fish for some inspiration, and would be grateful for any tutorials anyone else might have. Thanks in advance!
  5. My wife and I have been working on a geocaching kit for the kids for Christmas. Its kind of getting down to the wire though, and we want to make sure we can get our travel bugs in time to place within the kit. Does anyone know of a location around the Charleston WV area, or within 50 miles of, that sells travel bugs? Or anything geocache related for that matter? Thanks in advance!
  6. My only hope is that all this doesn't complicate logging a cache. Im not speaking for myself, I love the hobby, and I wouldn't personally mind opting in. However I do know quite a few who love the game, but think logging caches can be a tedious adventure, and should be allowed the option to opt out.
  7. I did a search and I know it has been talked about, but it would be really nice to have nano size as both a cache listing, and searchable option. Perhaps since you folks are working on quality of caches and such and revamping the system, maybe it can be added in as an option??
  8. So you mean if there are 10 people who add me to their favorite, my cache could achieve awesomeness??
  9. Thanks alot Dbreirley. Knowing these folks too, Im sure there will be some sort of fee attached to it as well... Im not sure about anyone else, but I have honestly learned alot today just by looking through alot of the material, and trying to put it to use. Just wanted to send out a thank you. Keep it coming.
  10. I have to compliment you all on your ability to find ownership so quickly. The technique would really help greatly when trying to obtain permission. I tried to check on my state's land deed or tax and came up empty as far as online resources. Im not saying its not there, only that I was personally unable to find it. So I tried to locate it via the Google maps option using the coordinates for Lost Scroll of Geo N 38° 13.663 W 081° 38.213 I came up with County Route 42 Alum Creek, WV 25003, which is just the name of the road, and not the individual lot. I suppose my state doesn't currently support using this method as to idividual lots or land deeds. I did however try to place this in a search, but came up empty. Perhaps its just not something I am use to looking at... maybe you will have better luck. If you do, please post, and the method you used to find it. Appreciate the good work. Just remember, no one is perfect, and not everyone has the same knowledge and know-how you do. Sharing is always nice though as we can all stand to learn something new every day.
  11. I just wanted to give my apologies. I know how sensative some people can get about identity. I had forgotten that these particular forums don't link back to the original profile on geocaching.com. So for the sake of identity, my caching name is TheArtisan, mainly because I like to craft many things. WAY too many hobbies. hehe Below are a list of my current cache hides. Microflux Georail Stabilizer Steampunk Geobox Lost Scroll of Geo My son's cache, which as I stated helped him place. Glitter and Shine My daughter's cache, which I also stated I helped place. Dino Cache So hope this helps a little. I appreciate everyone's feedback. Thank you for the helpful links and such. My goal is education. Water stirring, and mud can be used for other things. Hot chocolate and pies come to mind... hehe. My apologies btw if this isn't debating openly. Seeing this is a public area, free to open discussion, I thought I was... Anyway, back on subject. The Lost Scroll of Geo is perhaps the one in which I question as far as permission goes. The cache is located about 500 feet from the main road leading into the park. The cache itself however is not on park property. Thank you again for the duscussion, look forward to reading more. Sylven AKA TheArtisan
  12. Being an over-hobbiest, I usually place some of my crafted stuff in there. Wire jewelry, polymer clay charms, beads, or something else I have some up with along the way. Concerning the penny, I actually took a penny and hammered it out. Cut it with my tools to make an arrowhead. Then attached it to a carved shaft about 2 in long. Looked really interesting when it was finished. I put a tag on it expaining how it was made, and what it was. I love to craft what can I say... By the way, welcome to geocaching. I hope you find the joy in it, that it has brought to us.
  13. I wanted to begin a topic on cache permission; what it is, when it applies, is it something you practice on a regular basis. I suppose I will give my opinions first, regarding my three questions on the subject, and look forward to reading constructive criticism on the matter. I realize this matter has been discussed in variation. I however wanted to take differnt spin on it, in an open manner. Anyway...here goes. Queston 1 "What exactly is permission to place a cache?" I actually looked up the word permission from several sources. Im not trying to lawyer anything here, it was for my benefit, so I could have a deeper understanding of the word. The one I found I really liked is from 1828 Webster Ditionary. "2: [Noun] Allowance; license or liberty granted. You have given me your permission for this address..." I just thought it applied a little more. liberty=freedom So I suppose if I asked someone for their permission to place a cache on their property, I am asking if I have the freedom to enter their domain to place a game piece, and then have the same freedom to leave. I am also asking them to extend that same liberty to anyone else so choosing to follow the numerical path on and off said property. Question 2 "When does needing permission apply to a geocache I want to place?" I looked through the guidelines as to when you should get permission for a placed geocache. I really didn't have to look any further than here... The "Guidelines that Apply to all Cache Types" states that "...Your cache may be hidden on public property with permission..." If this guideline applies to a public cache location, then I would definately have to get permission to place a cache on private property, unless the property is of course my own. So what about areas in which no one really owns, such as "right of ways", etc...? So I suppose I have some basic understanding of permission needed to place a cache. But I would honestly like to hear your input, perhaps there is something I am missing... Question 3 "Is asking permission something you practice on a regular basis?" My kids and I have been geocaching for a couple of years now. We have had a really great time. There came a time however we decided to split up into our own geocaching names. I have since helped them place their own caches, and three of my own. Most of these areas, except perhaps one, were right of way areas, not truely belonging to anyone. None of which I, nor my kids, asked for permission to place. The one which is questionable is outside of park property, and authority, but close by. I have another cache placement coming up, and even though it is in an area that no one really owns, I stopped by the couple's house who lived near by and talked with them about what I wanted to do and asked for their permission, being that it could create minor traffic in the area. They happily agreed and said that would be fine. So pretty excited about that. This however, was the only time I even remotely (so far) obtained permission. So how about you?
  14. Don't mean to be a negative nelly, but I think I would probably skip something like this. Just my opinion. So, you really, really mean to tell me that if you had gone through whatever it took to find the cache, if you saw something like that you'd just turn and walk away? Well my thought of walking away, is alot better than the guy who would change the location of the log, and then report it as needing maintenance. But yea honestly, I would chalk it up as a nice hike, which I like to do, and leave it as is. Something like this just wouldn't be fun to me. This isn't really even creative. And again, just my opinion. If this is your thing, thats great. hehe

  16. This is our caching companion, Siraven, our 5 year old chihuahua. We have since dubbed her "Geodog". She loves getting out, especially long walks in the mountains. I try to make sure I keep her needs in mind while we're caching. I keep some sort of small water container for her to drink out of, like this mini thermos.
  17. Personally I love the inactive geocoin idea. I have come in contact with some online logs which stated they had done this. Would be a really nice FTF. I have seen another cache in which the CO left enough money for 1 gallon of gas, at the time the cache was placed. I placed a cache back in September that included a roman type coin, made of metal. It was a necklace piece which I found at a craft store. I thought it fit the cache I was planning on making. I was going for a "lost scrolls of Alexander" theme. The actual log book is a scroll I crafted from wood, and rolls up. Its been a tough find so far. In another cache I created, with a steampunk feel to it, I had crafted several items, and left the first to find up to the cacher. For the record, the FTF taken was an arrowhead I had crafted from a penny. I had fastened it to a shaft, and then wrapped the base to stablize and tighten it. It was only about 3 inches long, but turned out nice. In my opinion, I don't feel that leaving a first to find is a bad thing, considering the founder, when he started this whole thing, left a "cache" of items. My family and I have been caching for a while now, and just recently decided to split off into seperate caching names. (anyone else did this?) Its been really fun to go back and re-cache some of the previous caches. Some other ideas for FTF: Small wooden figurine (I have been doing some wood carving and such as of late, severe hobby issues...) Stone figurine or coin (if you have the means to aquire or craft one) Seasonal item depending on when the cache is placed. An item a cacher might use while caching (several options here) place a dog tag on the cache stating who the original FTF was. Just a few ideas. Leaving things isn't lame. The game started on that basis, and it keeps it interesting. I appreciate a good cache with items. That is however, just my opinion. Hope this helps.
