I wish it didn't bring up the pop up box every time you loaded the maps, and I wish you didn't have to click on 'personalisation' every time.

Great! Except I go to the new statistics thing and find that the dates there are still in unreadable format.. close but no cigar yet!

The phone applications take considerable amounts of time and effort to develop, this has to be paid for, one way or another. Lets look at it the other way, if the apps themselves were free and funded out of premium membership fees people who didn't use the apps would be within their rights to complain about money being spent on something that's of no use to them.

Thanks for the info. I'll leave the cache as a 1.5 then as it's not accessible from a sitting position.
It does seem there are quite a few terms here, "handicapped" isn't usually used in the UK, with "disabled" being mostly used instead.
-
Like many I submitted my first cache with a terrian of 1 and the reviewer suggested that I move it to 1.5 if it wasn't wheelchair accessible, this was fine.
But how accessible does it need to be? e.g. I have a cache which is on a flat, public footpath and the cache is at the bottom of a bridge support - slightly below the ground level. A cacher in a wheelchair could get right to the cache location, but could they retrieve the cache? Or do Terrain 1 caches need to be grabable from a sitting position?

The thing you eventually learn is that with the exception of magnetic caches you are very rarely looking directly for the cache itself, you are looking for the item which is hiding the cache location. Quite often a nicely placed rock or pile of sticks. For a geocacher it sticks out like a bright shining beacon, for a muggle it doesn't look like anything!
I too am still guilty - even after a year of getting to zero metres on the GPS and going "well where is it?!"
-
For me, never straying more than 20 minutes from the car, the iPhone 4 is ideal, I've done several hours of caching and it's still been on 50% battery. But if you are going on a long hike then consider something that won't run out of battery so fast.
-
I used Viewranger on my N97 and found my first dozen or so caches with it, it's not bad considering it's a mapping, and not geocaching application.
-
Not sure, but they can't really shut it down now, there are too many critical applications that depend on GPS working.
-
I quite like the fact that I only *discovered* caching recently. It means that all the places I've been on day trips to with my wife - I can go there again and enjoy the trip as if I'd never been there before!
-
I had been considering a multi-cache where the stages would be spread out over hundreds of miles, but would probably be road signs, the trick being that you could use google street view to get all the clues if you wanted. I wonder if such a cache is permissable.

40MPG? My car does better than that even if I deliberately drive it trying to waste fuel.

Knowing the size of the container makes things much easier, I think if you know you are looking for a nano vs a film pot then it makes things a little too easy.
I like the idea of size 1 just being anything smaller than a tupperware box.

Well there's Favourites and My Souvineers, I don't think you can add any more.

I nearly wet myself when I read this bit:
"Why are you doing it?"
"Well, someone has to."
"Why?"
"So that we know how many there are."
Talk about a question that invites a blindingly obvious reply...
Answer: That's confidential information!

But of course GPS can only determine your heading by comparing your location to your previous location so is only of any use if you are on the move. If you've stopped or walking slowly, this doesn't help at all.

Depends on your point of view. As a finder, the online log may be looked at as a logging mechanism for a smilie. As a cache owner - you see the emails as a notice that your cache has been logged and found. With 150+ active caches - I do not peruse them regularly to see if anybody has edited a previous log - and I am not notified of changes anybody makes. Thus, as a courtesy, I should strive to make my first 'find' loga note to the owner and as complete as possible.
It would be a good idea if you could also get emails if someone edits their logs. Not just for the reasons you cite but also they could post a reasonable first log and then edit it to include spoilers.

I've been spotted once so far, maybe not a good average with only 10 finds. My son and I were looking for one in the brush off the side a grocery store parking lot when a young man walked by and simply said "that's a tough one, but I found it!" and he continued walking away. He was right. That's on my DNF list for now...
hehe! I got caught like that once too, I was looking for a cache with my wife and a guy came up to me and said "You're looking in the right place!", and handed me the cache, seems he'd been in his car, signing the log!

From what I can see caches are marked as 1.5 terrian by default now, to avoid that issue.

I use an iPhone 4 and love its "grab and go" functionality. I also have an eTrex but don't use it very often and usually use it as a backup to the phone.
Yep, I always have my phone with me, so I can always go caching. As long as I have a signal, which can be rather problematic at times. Of course if I know where I'm going in advance I can download a pocket query to use offline.

I don't see why it should be free. Groundspeak put a lot of money into running all the servers for us, servers don't run on goodwill alone, they need cash, and lots of it. Plus the people working on the website and looking after the servers need to pay their mortgage etc etc.
So £20 a year for a premium membership and a one off £5.99 for an app seem excellent value to me considering how much time I spend on the hobby.
-
Yes, but you don't need a compass (or working compass function) to geocache. The GPS signals don't use magnetism.
I don't know about that particular unit, but a lot of them do.

Hi
I Hid my first cache yesterday, im not sure if i did something wrong but it's not showing up on the map.
It says this on my profile
Cache Issues:
* This cache has not been reviewed yet. Once it is published, it will be listed on the site. Check the logs to see if the reviewers have left a note for this listing.
does this mean it has to be reviewed by a moderator before 'going live'? If not, what have I done wrong?
Kind Regards
I'm struggling to think in what way the message on the cache page was not entirely clear?

I still want the old maps. Not real impressed with the new mapping except its shows more than 500 on the map. Just like the old one better. Wish they could improve that mapping instead of the Beta.
Not sure what's wrong with the new maps? I've seen a lot of people say they don't like them but no indication as to why?

On the beta maps I really loved the smilies they used on there on the medium zoom, now they've replaced them and they look completely horrid. The smiley face was one of the most iconic things on geocaching for me and definitely not something which should have been messed with.
I normally like change and new things but the new smilies are just horrible! Bring back the old ones!
