  1. Talking about geocaching now! Even though he didn't do it himself!

missed it - what was the jist?

They spent about half an hour building up to what he'd done at the weekend, which was "really geeky" and his co hosts had to guess what he'd been doing, and that it involved "finding something"

Their guess was that he'd been geocaching as Dominic had found some people looking in his hedge a little while back and when challenged their response was "We're just geocaching!". Then Comedy Dave described it as a "Treasure hunt".

But Moyles then responded "Why would I want to do something like that?!" and went on to describe something else, I know not what because I had to switch off at that point as I was late for work!

It was just after the 7.30am news so I guess on iPlayer it would be about 1 hour in. Note that the iPlayer version is different from the podcast which is a weekly edited highlights program.

  2. Walked up to a restaurant in Madiera where a cache was hidden outside and the waiters immediately called out "GEOCACHERS!!" talk about being rumbled

I agree, internet treasure hunt is the best description, as only cachers actually know what geocaching is IME!

  3. I always use my Tom Tom to get me to any drive by, every parking waypoint and even as close to GZ.

It's fool proof for the two former but hit and miss for the later.

I would be lost without my Tom Tom..... REALLY!

As been said in other posts ... navigate to: Long... Lat.

i even know a few cachers that rely on Tom Tom to find a cache.... how do they do that?

Unfortunately the navigate to Lat / Long isn't available on some of the first generation of TomTom units. But these can usually be fixed with a software update.

I used my TomTom to find my first caches and it's difficult to use off road and difficult to read what the screen is telling you. You can only really find something in relation to a road!

  4. Thanks. So you are saying that the first stage can be as close as I like to other existing caches? If so, great!

PS. I only want to put it in that location as it's the main square in the town and hence a logical starting point since it's very well known and close to parking etc.

Any 'non physical' part of a cache, such as 'Question to Answer' can be as near to another cache as you wish. Even at the same co-ords...

There was a discussion on the US side of the forums, and given the right conditions 'Question to Answer' 'Reference Point' 'Bogus co-ords' for a puzzle cache etc., you can get around three or four icons all posted at the same spot on a map! :)

Cheers. I think my coords won't be exactly on top of the existing cache, just a bit closer then 0.1 miles.

  5. Thanks. So you are saying that the first stage can be as close as I like to other existing caches? If so, great!

  6. Hello!

I'm thinking of setting up a multi-cache in my home town. The place where I'll be hiding the final cache is well away from any other caches.

However the place where I'd like the inital coordinates to be, would basically be right next to an existing physical cache; although the task for the cacher at this point would just be a visual one (e.g. counting the number of letters etc) and wouldn't involve this cache. Would this be ok with the guidelines?

Additionally is it acceptable in the description of a multi-cache to suggest other caches people can do along the way? Ones which are not owned by me.

  7. I don't know if it is available for your phone but you could try Trimble's Geocache Navigator, thats what I use on my Nokia in the UK HTH

I've found it no problem to just use the standard website on my Nokia N97. Even though it can take a while to load with it being very graphics and data heavy. Why they don't have a proper mobile version, I don't know..

  8. Developing applications for each indiviudal phone is a crazy strategy as it requires WAY WAY WAY more effort than just producing a mobile friendly stripped down version of the website.

I certainly agree a mobile version is needed, while I do load geocaching.com on my Nokia when out caching, it takes an age to load each page due to the weight of data which needs to be transferred. Geocaching is an outdoor hobby and access while you are out and about needs to be catered for as the first priority, not the last!

  9. Is it possible, or could it be possible in the future, to be able to filter geocaches on the google map view according to what language the description is written in?

This would be especially useful for me as I enjoy geocaching when on holiday abroad, but a look through some of the caches in Madeira for example are written in Portuguese, as you would expect but there's also quite a few in English and quite a few with translations of both.

It would be nice to just see caches in languages I can read and hide the rest.

  10. I'm putting together a cache which I'm planning on putting next to a public footpath that runs around the back of a pub.

Now I had assumed that in my description I would put something like "Please don't park in the pub car park! Instead you can park on the road at xxxxx".

But I noticed on another thread at least one cache description has "Park in the pub car park".

But am I right in thinking such advice would be frowned upon?

  11. A caching friend of mine (and this one really wasn't me, although it easily could have been) spotted a cache on his GPS near where he happened to be. So he went to the coordinates, which conveniently had a park bench there. Hunted high and low, not knowing if he was looking for a film pot or an ammo can. After about half an hour he gave up and checked the cache when he got home only to find it was...

    ...

    ...

    a webcam cache.

On my recent stag do we all went geocaching, Using a list of caches provided by my wife to be. We spent ages searching around Honister slate mine in the rain, for a cache with no sucess, until when I got back I read the details and it said it was a virtual cache!

  12. I am planning a geocaching event at my school. Since I am a former land surveyor, I plan to incorporate some survey history practice and lingo in the exercise. --I am, however, new to geocaching.

I have decided to run two groups of 18 students, at two different sessions, to search for 6 caches. I have also decided that each team of 3 within the groups will start at 6 different "points of beginning" for which they can check coordinates and gather satellites. I also plan to send each group toward a separate end point from which they will find a cache after solving a puzzle or using horizontal or vertical distance etc.

If anyone has any ideas about organizing the logistics, please advise.

Are you going to use caches already listed on gc.com or place ones on the site?

There's no need to do either of course. You can hide the 6 caches and get the coordinates yourself gc.com need not be invovled!

Sounds like a good way to do a multi-cache. e.g. Each cache will contain part of the coordinates to find the "big" cache at the end. Then the winning team gets a little prize :P

  13. hi there

have just found my first cache and well excited!!!! lol

i have a question though......the only reason i found this was because i knew the area because when i tried to input the co ordinates into my phone they wouldnt register......my phone is asking for 8 digits and all the coordinates on the site are 7 digits long...can anyone tell me why this is?

Applications > Location > Positioning > Notation Preferences > Coordinate Format.

If none of the listed formats are any good, you can just whack a zero on the end of the coordinates on this site, it won't affect the accuracy.

is it that my phone is no good as a gps. its a noika 5800

I've got a Nokia N97 and GPS reception sucks. I've paired it with a Bluetooh GPS and it now rules!

also i have a tomtom sat nav for the car...is this any good for geocaching>?

I've done it, and it's great for getting you close to the location by car. But it's difficult when you're on foot to make out which direction you should be going etc. Not impossible, just more difficult that a proper phone. The most annoying part of the TomTom is it's fairly large in size but if you put it into your pocket to get both hands free you'll end up toching the screen and going into all sorts of menus, so when you get it back out again it's probably navigated you off to Australia or something.

  14. Same here. I've known about Geocaching for years but never tried it until last weekend when I thought it would be a good idea as a daytime activity for my stag party. And it was! Good fun driving around the mountains in the Lake District. Although we only found 2 out of 5, that didn't matter
