  1. I just pulled out and started fiddling with my venture cx a few days ago.. unfortunately, it's freezing outside, and the darn thing won't pick up any satellite signals from within the house.. I have read the manual, but I gotta tell you, for a newbie, this thing seems complicated, and the manual doesn't seem to spell things simply.... Let's say I drive to a park, park the car, and get ready for 3 hour hike.. I want to start recording and saving the whole hike starting from the parking lot and ending at the parking lot on my return. Would I need to zoom in all the way first? What would I do on the gps to accomplish this??? and what if on my hike I found a landmark I wanted to mark? I appreciate all the help I can get.. Steve
  2. Just got my Venture CX gps today in the mail....Since I do alot of hiking in the woods of Ohio and Kentucky, I figured a topo map of these regions would be necessary, and have been told on here that I would want the maps... But I am having second thoughts.. Do I really need to spend $60-$80 for this? I really don't know what to expect if I order one.. I figure it will color the background on the GPS indicating wilderness, rockiness, etc.. but this seems useless, since I can determine that on my own in the woods ? Is there something I am missing? Maybe someone can explain to me what a topo map will provide and how it would be useful to me, if it is believed a topo map would be beneficial... thanks for the help... Steve
  3. Received the gps today... It was the Venture CX adventure bundle that I received for $151.00 total..... It comes with the venture CX gps, carrying case, and a northeastern Topo map on an SD card.. so it wasn't the entire topo 2008 I was hoping for.. But, I really don't have a need for the northeastern topo, I needed midwest--ohio kentucky, etc.. It's still about $30 bucks cheaper than these bundles are going for anywhere, including ebay.. Wasn't extremely impressed by thenerds.net customer service.. Never received any response to any email I sent them, and when I called, someone put be on hold (with music playing) cutting me off while I was speaking to them.. etc... Steve
  4. thenerds.net has the venture cx with topo bundle..Using a coupon code I found.. it was actually $150... I hope it's not a misprint or something... No real description or pic to go along with ad.. so needless to say, I have no idea what topo map I getting..I have seen it on other sites with topo 2008( complete) and I have seen other sites that bundle it with just the northeast portion....
  5. I have made my decision... I think I am going with the venture CX... It has glowing reviews, and I too also read it gets great signals in deep woods, even though it's not an "H"... I found it for $160, with shipping, and with topo maps.. which actually makes it as cheap or cheaper than the venture HC... I am only confused by one thing.. if the sd slot on the venture cx is only for loading, and not saving (which I think I read), and I don't see any internal memory listed.. how does it save routes, etc..?? I hope I am making the right decision, but due to it's reviews I should be alright.. Steve
  6. Narrowed it down to 3 GPS's... but as novice, can't decide.. This will be used for mostly hiking in the woods and storing data about hike, etc... like marking where I find mushrooms, or other stuff... you know, recording hike.....maybe some geocaching... Turn by Turn directions might be nice, but not important at this time....I am leaning towards the explorist 500 because of features and price ($120).. Venture HC would cost about same, but should the limited memory in it concern me? and it seems more limited overall? Venture CX seems good, but seems overall like the explorist, just more expensive? I need help considering these three...! P.S.. As I will be hiking, I will be buying Topo maps for whichever one.... Thanks, Steve
  7. Sounds good.. But you can't upload the Etrex H with topo maps, right? After doing more research, I guess I am looking for a hiking GPS, like the etrex H, but that can hold topo maps and has some sort of expansion memory slot so I can upload large portions of topo, and is good under heavy cover... what would be the cheapest GPS that is suitable for serious hiking, and has expansion slot for topo maps... Thanks Steve
  8. I am new to this.. I am going to be doing alot of hiking this spring, summer, and fall... While I hike, I look for things such as mushrooms, berries, etc.... and would like to keep track of my hikes on a GPS, be able to recall this info for years to come, and also mark spots of my path on the GPS where I found mushrooms, etc.. and be able to find my way with it, etc... Can someone recommend some GPSs that would accomplish this for a decent price (money is tight)?? I would also like to know if there is anything else that I would need in a GPS for serious hiking.. steve
  9. I want a GPS for serious hiking through the woods around home or back in the holler in KY, and maybe some goecaching, etc... I researched these awhile back and found the meridian gold/platinum or explorist 500 to be great GPS's for hiking.. Hopefully these have come down in price (probably discontinued by now?)...maybe a etrex legend c(x)... Anyways, anyone out there have a deal on these, or one they can let go cheap? Can't find any deals on Black Friday for handhelds (just autos).... Any good websites that have cheap prices on this stuff.. Amazon.com isn't cheap enough.. Thanks Steve Vandalia, OH
  10. Okay.. Ihave been reading alot of reviews of GPS, etc.. and I am still hesitate to buy... My main use is going to be just hiking through small mountains and unexplored woods, BUT I want one that will have no problem with maps, as in, complete driving directions with an add on CD... So my conclusion is : !) need one that has good outdoor features (do all have this, for instance, the Emap gps by garmin? is it an OUTDOOR Gps???).. Do all GPS have same outdoor capabilies besides a compass, barometer??? 2) need one that accepts memory cards of some sort, seems the way to go... 3)one with mapping ability for driving directions, etc.. Now, what is the cheapest that will accomplish this? From my research, it seems I would want the Meridian Gold or Platinum, because it take SD cards..but they are expensive (I am on budget)... Is the Garmin Emap an option? the product description never mentions anything outdoor related with the Emap.. Please help.....I need guidance, and want one by christmas!! Steve
