  1. I am using a Zire 72 with a GPS for Palm with Tom Tom software. When transfering an .ov2 file to my memory card using a card reader, I know that all the caches(300) are getting there cause I viewed the OV2 file and saw them all. The software only will place 100 cache icons on the map in the POI category. I have used filters to make different POI categories from diferent home points, so I know how to do that. Do you know of anyway to overcome the 100 POI max for an individual POI Category? Keyman121
  2. I have a Palm Zire 72 and I love it. I bought a Palm Bluetooth GPS with Tom Tom software included and it works pretty good. It's the only unit I have for Geocaching. The Palm and Tom Tom combo is comparable to Tom Tom Street Mapping hardware units that sell for $1000! I had to get Geocaching.com membership, GSAK and Cachemate software also. alitlle added expense but not much. the bluetooth works fine. I have to set it default to off and then start it when I am ready to cache, otherwise it uses to much battery power being on at all times. I sometimes have had a problem losing the bluetooth connection when switching between software on the palm, but nothing that can't be overcome. check out my posts under GPS Units and Software and also check out posts by "Marky" Keyman121

  4. Did you get mapping software with your bluetooth GPS? If so, there is probably a way to add waypoints (Points of interest) to your maps. I do that with my TomTom software, and have icons of all loaded caches right on my maps in their exact location. It is a big help in driving to a cache.
  5. Probably a little more info than you need, but here is all my posts on the subject in one thread: My posts on using Palm Zire 72 / GPS Combo to Geocache I love my Zire 72/ GPS Combo. Some posts have dissed it because a palmpilot is not a hearty outdoor unit. I have had to protect it from wet snow. and I have even dropped it in the snow a couple times. but so far so good. The Tom Tom software compares with other GPSr units of $1000! The Road Mapping software is excellent. Of course at this point the T/T software is pretty worthless for off road, but they may have a software upgrade sometime down the road. I had to upgrade to the latest software version to load Waypoints into T/T maps using GSAK, but now i can nav to them and see them everywhere on the map.(Thank God for Marky!) When I get off road, I switch over to Cachemate/CacheNav Software (only $8 at smittyware.com) and it works great. I have found this unit to be pretty accurate. You will need an SD Card. The Combo comes with a 64MB (enough to get you started). I bought a 512Mb SD card(around $50) and have room for plenty of maps(all of Ohio is 30MB), Pics and MP3s. I also bought a Card Reader Writer(around $20). It is a lot faster for MP3 downloads and is required to write the GSAK exported GPX files to the T/T software. It is not required to write the GSAK exported GPX files to the Cachemate/CacheNav Software. Check out my other post: Considering A Palmone Zire 72 / Gps Combo? Battery life and Memory card info. Best price I have found for the Combo is at www.pagecomputers.com Do a search on "Zire 72 GPS" to get to ZIRE 72 GPS NAVIGATION PACK for only $387.33 plus shipping PalmOne has a deal right now for $400 after rebate w/free shipping. I use my Palm ALOT. Am never without it. Address Book, Calendar, Games, Bible, Still and Video Camera(the quality isn't that great, but you always have a camera with you),MP3 Player. Well, I guess you do need to be somewhat of a TechnoHead to productively use this Combo for GeoCaching. But if you can live with that, it is by far the best bang for the buck. You cannot add POIs unless you have the latest software. Tom Tom support isn't very good. They have so many things in the installation process that they don't tell you, that it is almost a requirement to call tech support to load it. They have many versions of software because of US vs European differences, so it is a little confusing on what upgrade to get. Even though I bought a separate GPS Pack for a Zire72 I already have, your software and upgrade needs should be the same as mine. In Navigator, go to Preferences/About Navigator. I'm guessing your App version is 4.00. If so, you need to upgrade to V4.40. If you already have 4.40, skip the following paragraph. If it is lower than 4.00, the following method may or may not work. Otherwise do this: On the www.tomtom.com website, click SUPPORT on the top bar. Then click UPDATES on left. Under Tom Tom Navigator for Palm , Click "Update September 04 TomTom Navigator 4.40 for Palm" . Follow download and installation instructions. Check Preferences/About Navigator to verify you now have 4.40 Software. You cannot Upload GSAK POI files using Hot Sync. Make sure you have the Maps you want loaded on to the Memory card. You should now be able to go into Navigator and choose: Change Preferences;Maintain POI. Choose: Add POI Category. Type in the name exactly as you called the file you exported in GSAK and click "done". (Example, I have a Gsak file "My First.gpx" which I exported as "My First.ov2". I enter a new POI category,"My First")(ignore quotes). Select an Icon of your choice on the next screen. You are now ready to put the mem card in your reader. One of the folders is TomTom xxxx Map(in my case TomTom Ohio Map). If you have multiple Maps, open the appropriate map folder for the waypoints in your export file. You should see "my named file".ov2" in that folder. Copy the Exported GSAK file from you hard drive to the file in the card. OK to overwrite. Put the card back in your Palm, start Navigator, Change Preferences, Maintain POI, Enable/Disable POI, check "my named file". Go back to main page and select Option "Browse Map" Zoom out and you should see your Cache locations as icons. Click on an icon. The Cache's name will appear. To Navigate to a Cache, "navigate to...", Point of Interest, "my named file" and choose a Cache to dash to. Now wasn't that easy? The Zire 72 and PalmOne GPS units have no easily replaceble batteries. (Not really sure if they are user replaceble at all). Rechargeble battery life is good. I think close to 2 hours on a charge. Never used it up in one shot. I plug the palm in next to my bed every night by habit. I think it only takes a couple hours to fully recharge. Not sure about the on time and recharge time for the GPS unit, but probably similar. Since they are lithium ion batteries you don't have to wait for discharge before recharging them. True, you can't recharge or replace batteries in the field, but the package comes w/ a car battery adaptor that recharges both the palm and the GPS unit while driving from Cache to Cache. You will find that most caches only require constant "on" of the GPS and Palm while on the trail when you get close to the cache, so I don't think it is a problem not being able to pop in new batteries on the fly. Also be aware, to store MP3s, movies and GPS Tom Tom Maps, you will need an SD Memory card for the Zire 72. I bought the max that PalmOne recommends - 512Mb. Got a Kingston for $32 after rebate from Tigerdirect.com. There are more expensive cards with faster write speeds though. The program shell is not too big, but the maps of all of Ohio take up about 30Mb. So if you want to keep several states loaded all the time, you can see how a 64Mb card wouldn't be enough. I max the rest of the card with mp3s. Oh another thing. if you want to upload many megs of songs or anything else to the card alot, you should consider getting a USB card reader/writer(r/w). For some reason, the larger your card, the slower the download is from your PC to the card during a sync. Has to do with processor speed of the palm or the way memory cards work or something. You can get a multiple format card r/w for $10-$20. This speeds up the transfers considerably. This also allows you to use the card as a movable storage device if all PCs you are transfering data to have the card r/w's drivers loaded and you take the unit and card with you from place to place. The PalmOne software only allows you to transfer programs and files that the palm can recognize, So you can't transfer .exe(s) or .doc(s) for example with a sync. The card r/w allows you to do this. See my other posts or posts by Marky on the topic. 1. I did use it for finding a cache or two using only the Zire last week, worked okay, but I found it isn't as acurate as the vista. I read something about mile settings in a thread last night and wondering if I need to set it differently. Make sure CacheNav Preferences is set to Statute miles, not Nautical. I don't think that would affect accuracy thou. 2. Whenever I look for POI on TomTom, no matter where I am, it looks for the closest ones to home. I'm also unsure as to how many POI you can have on a file? It doesn't show them all when you scan through them, only shows those within about 30 miles. Have difficulty locating the one I want. You are correct that TomTom shows you the list of POI's by closest to home. To get around this problem, I create a few different Pocket Queries with different names and different waypoint origins. You can set total caches(I use 100), max miles(I use 100) and other filters. Set " From Origin" to your choice of type. Have each query run and mailed to you on different days if you want. I create different GSAK pdb and ov2 export files from each query with names like My First, Brecksville, Downtown. etc. and load them all onto the palm. (GSAK can be a little hard figuring out how to keep all those data bases seperate, but hang in there.) I don't know the max POIs that are allowed but I think it is alot. When you add a new POI category and create a new name, use a different icon for each category. Then when you look on the map, you will see different groups of waypoints that can overlap. I only have 3 categories of 75 right now, but I bet you can get a lot more. ......Just checked my Palm and tried to navigate to one of my POI categories and only saw 6 in the list!!!AAAghh. They were all on the map, but not in the list. Is this possibly what you are experiencing. I went to Maintain POIs, Add POI, picked the Category in question and added "home". POOF, all my caches were now back in the list. Maybe I solved your problem by accident. 3. I can't get cachemate to find the nearest caches. It tells me I'm lacking a plugin required. Yet, I've been through the lists of plugins and can't figure out what I could be missing. It looks like some PDA's have had trouble with that function so there was a lock put on it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with that. I have the same problem. I go to the Info page of the cache I'm at or nearest to and copy the coords of the cache waypoint. Then I just do a search, nearest caches and paste into the line. hit OK twice and that gives the list in order starting at closest. Click on a cache and you will see it's distance and heading from the origin. To come back to the search list later do a search, last search. I see where that may be a good idea. Seems like you are using the GSAK filtering to create different databases, where I have been filtering, using multiple PQs. I have to constantly load several updated DBs into Gsak, which is a pain. If I do 500 closest PQ, then thats only one update per week(or however I choose)(as long as I'm near home), and I'm asuming GSAK will filter the new Caches for me appropriately. Maybe I will try that. Also try while navigating and while in Browse Map Mode: Click on the map where the arrow is.(your current location). Or you can click anywhere on the map you want to make an origin point even if you are off line!. The Cursor(little blue octagon) will move to that point. Then click on the Cursor option along the bottom of the screen. Click on "Find Nearby POI", pick a POI category and....voila! The list of closest caches from the point you picked. Some people get obsessive about seeking caches. I go for the technology. I have alot to learn about finding Caches. But its cool cause I can already feel my GEOSense starting to grow. Bad time of year to start. I live in what they call the Snowbelt where we get Lake Effect snow. But more of the problem is, by the time I get out of work, it's dark. That is changing finally. i'm not in the greatest shape and I figured this is a good way to get me off my butt and do some hiking. It's the aerobics of the Aughts: Walking around in circles with your head down. LOL
  6. Clyde, I just upgraded to the latest software version and it tells me I'm not registered. I enter my name and S/N and it tells me I am now registered. Then it look like another popup comes up awith a 120sec countdown and says I need to register. If I wait till it times out and press OK, I get an error message as shown below. I've tried rebooting and uninstalling and reinstalling the software but no luck. Any ideas? 7. I just upgraded to the latest software version and it tells me I'm not registered. I enter my name and S/N and it tells me I am now registered. Then it look like another popup comes up awith a 120sec countdown and says I need to register. If I wait till it times out and press OK, I get an error message as shown below. I've tried rebooting and uninstalling and reinstalling the software but no luck. Any ideas? 8. The Tom Tom software that comes with the Combo, currently has no way to enter Coords in the field. You need a third party software to do that. You also need a 3rd party software to have a compass style viewer to let you know how close you are to the cache. I use Cachemate/CacheNav for both these things and GSAK to export Cachemate PDB files and TOm TOM OV2 files to the Palm. To add a coord in the field, I open any Cachemate Cache, copy the coord text from the info page, open a NEW Cache, paste into the coords line at the bottom, modify the Coords text appropriately, and Name the new Cache something like Temp1 or "Cachename"2, etc. Another 3rd party software is GeoNiche, but it is kind of complicated and also a pain to work with unless you buy the full version. It can be a hassle to switch back and forth between TomTom Navigator and Cachemate and sometimes the GPS won't connect unless I soft reboot the PDA but the excellent Tom Tom Street Mapping Software makes this Combo great for the money. Mike
  9. Had fun over a month's time, picking away at the blue stuff. Already had the Zire when I bought the Palm GPS. I left a jagged edge strip at the top so I can still see the PalmOne Zire72 names. Looks kinda cool. I never touch that part so the acid in my hand can't eat away at it like it did the rest. Betcha it looks just like the Combos they are selling now. All silver. NEOGEO (NorthEast Ohio group) is having a Paperless Cache 101 get together and I am looking forward to showing off this combo.
  10. I love my Zire 72/ GPS Combo. I had to upgrade to the latest software version to load Waypoints into T/T maps, but now i can nav to them and see them everywere on the map.(Thank God for Marky!) When I get off road, I switch over to Cachemate/CacheNav Software (only $8 at smittyware.com) and it works great. I have found this unit to be pretty accurate. You will need an SD Card. Get at least a 128Mb. Best Price I have found for the Combo is at www.pagecomputers.com Do a search on "Zire 72 GPS" to get to ZIRE 72 GPS NAVIGATION PACK for only $387.33 plus shipping I use my Palm ALOT. Keyman121 PS. E-mail me if you have any questions. Glad to help.
  11. The following were answers to questions from Freezejeans. Thought I'd post them for anyone considering this combo.
  12. I put a strip of Velcro along the top front of my Zire72. Yea, it looks funky but all the blue coating is coming off the unit, eaten up by the sweat in my palms anyway. I am slowly picking it off so eventually it will be all silver. Anyway, I then attached the matching velcro to the lower bottom of the GPS longways. I put 2 strips next to each other to get maximum grab. Then I slap the GPS on the blue tooth. It has a tendency to wobble and not grab tight so you have to move it low enough on the palm so that doesn't happen. It blocks the top of the screen but I can usually live with that. You have to be all ittle careful with it so it doesn't fall off while you're not looking, but so far it's worked for me.
  13. Decided to start a new topic: Geocaching Topic: Is Autorouting Cheating? Check it out.
  14. Well, went back to work and encouraged to see all diiferent views when I got back. I should probably detail what I do. Have a PalmOne Zire 72 with a Palm GPS Bluetooth. The Tom Tom Software included is excellent for Autorouting but lousy for Geocaching. Using GSAK on my PC, it will let you load waypoints as Points of Interests(POIs) but it will only route to street addresses. Therfore, what I considered as "cheating" was just looking at an overhead map view and seeing where the closest parking would be to the waypoint. I then have to switch over to Cachemate/CacheNav software for the Palm to navigate to the cache. I see how I could run into a problem that way. I also see how it definately takes some of the adventure out of it. Will probably try to use the CacheNav Software from scratch some time and see how I like it. It's hard not to use the technology at your disposal. Since half of Geocaching is GEO, it's part of the deal. Keep the topic up. Interested in some other views.
  15. I have a unit that has street routing software. Downloading waypoints shows me the exact cache locations on it's map. This allows me to easily find the street or parking area that is closest to the cache. I don't have to use this feature but as a newbie I didn't think of not using it. Then it occured to me, if you have a unit that only shows heading and distance, finding the cache would be more challenging. Do you purists out there think it is cheating to use street map routing software with marked waypoints. Let the discussions begin.
  16. Here's a possible forum topic (Imagine it's been done before) Do purists think it is cheating to use street map routing software with marked waypoints to find the closest street or parking area to the cache?
  17. Thanks all for the info. Will count multis as one find if from one cache posting or unless the owner shows differently.
  18. Is it appropriate to log multiple finds on a multicache?
  19. One nice accessory that comes with the pack is the car power adapter. From cigarette lighter to both the Palm and the GPS, while driving from cache to cache you are recharging the batteries in both units. Set the Palm in the included car mounter and toss the GPS on the dash. Works great. I took a piece of velcro and put it allong the top front of the Palm. Then put a couple strips together on the back of the GPS unit. When I'm in the field I just attach the GPS to the top of the Palm and I have an all in one single handed unit.
  20. Had my Zire 72 about 4 months now. Use it alot. Bought PalmOne Navigator two weeks ago. Street routing is fantastic for the price. Not very GeoCaching friendly though. But using Marky's suggestions, it's worked out pretty good. See Marky's posts on the topic. Do a "Zire 72" search. Also see my recent post in this forum, "Palmone Navigator & Garmin Gps V Deluxe" Found the PalmOne Navigator cheapest at http://www.pagecomputers.com/cgi-bin/page/M1409532.htm.
  21. I had a PalmOne Zire 72 and wanted to get into Geocaching. Bought the PalmOne GPS Navigator Bluetooth. Found out it is a great solution for road mapping. The Tom Tom Software stands up against much more expensive units. Excellent detailed maps that load into Palm memory card an entire state at a time. Audible Voice directions ("In 200 yards, turn left"). 3D real time route progress. Saw Tom Tom Hardware unit that looked like it did the same thing for $950. My Palm cost $250 and the GPS unit cost $250. Not bad for $500 and I have a Palm that plays MP3s, takes photos and movies. Not designed for Caching though. Member Marky was a life saver. PalmOne GPS customer service was useless. Had to upgrade the software from the web site which allowed me download GPX files from GSAK software to Points of Interest(POI), which allows me to see a bunch of caches on a city map with pretty good pan and zoom cababilities. Can only do route navigation to an Address so when I get close I must use Cachemate and CacheNav($8 Shareware) to home in. Have also looked at Geoniche as a more powerful compass type software solution. My wife gets lost easy so she said she wants one(Can't have mine! ). Did some research and just bought her a Garmin GPS V Deluxe. Doesn't talk to you but beeps before turns. Includes City Map software for US. Also looks like it is a decent Geocaching solution. Black and white but found it online for only $250. Have not tried it yet but will report more after I do. But it looks like an inexpensive solution for Geocachers who also want road mapping and routing capabilities. Well that's my rant. Post back or e-mail if you have questions.
