  1. i just got a 62s and wanted maps for it. www.gpsfiledepot.com for some garmin maps most maps come with installers. but first you need mapsource installed. went here http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/ and watched the videos on how to get the ibycus maps on my 62s. bottom of page. there are 3 videos that are 8-10 minutes each with lots of good info. kept seeing so many ppl using this that i knew it had to be easy to do. i just had to set time aside to do it. in a quickness you need to install garmin training center. http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/us/intosp...training_center then do the mapsource update http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 grab the maps and run the installers. do this after you install training center and the mapsource update. how to put maps you grabbed onto your gps http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-...armin-gps-unit/ there is a learning curve, but its not too bad. 2. i like to read the logs. wish i was better with the typed word so i could type some longer interesting logs. Monty
  3. heading to post office now to drop ours in the mail. Monty
  4. our GC doesnt always beep when getting close to GZ. Monty
  5. since i have no experience with the 60csx i will have to get with a local who has one and compare the 62s to it. from my outting on saturday i am impressed with the 62s. yes a learning curve, but so far i have found it to be a much better unit. yes it cost alot more and for some ppl that is not worth it. 200 for the GC and 400 for the 62s. today i figure how to get maps on it. i hope to get out tonight and see how the maps are in the real world. i have read that many a time on the forum here about the love and support Garmin gives its customers. have read some about Magellan, but it is not as often. seems alot of frustration for Magellan customers. i haven yet to pay attention to the mileage on either the GC or the 62s yet. well for caches i have, but not for traveled distance. Monty
  6. i did the seperate database thursday night. my gf was headed outside our home area for the weekend so i did some pq's for that and made a seperate DB for those. figured it would be easier. it was Monty
  7. isnt printing maps out defeating the purpose of paperless caching though?
  8. will have to find more time in the day then to do things i want to and need to do. i have been using GSAK to filter out things, but not near as detailed as yourself. i do need to figure out the filter to a shape too. that would come in handy for a trip. can pick out a path between places and filter that. looked easy so i tried once but i just couldnt get it. i am using the latest firefox if that makes a dif. dont care for IE. tonight i picked up a 62s so now i get to learn that too.
  9. with this being my first GPS i dont have previous models to compare it to. i just know that previous cell phones i have had are more responsive at times when compared to the GC. i have had a few hundred to 8000 caches on it and it doesnt seem to make much difference on how responsive it is. mayb some one on one time with it would help alot. specially to those who are interested in it. then they can compare to previous models on this aspect. i know last night i was so frustrated with it as we were driving around and by the time i had any info on the cache we were long past it if i didnt speak up before hand and let my gf know there was one coming up. to me that is not acceptable. then again mayb i am asking to much from the device? tonight i went to bass pro shops and got some time with the demo units they had. the delorme ones were not wrking so i was disapointed. and they didnt have magellan hand held units. so i got some time with the dakota 20, oregon 450, 450t, 550t, 62s, and 62st. the touch screen was ok, but i liked the buttons better on the 62's. i ended up leaving with a 62s. though if i had played with the delorme 60 i might have had a tougher choice. i know they are both new and have seen issues with them as with the GC in the forums....so will see what happens. now me and my gf have our own gpsr's. 10. i have an explorist GC and i started using vantage point, but quickly found it to be useless. then i decided to give GSAK a go. however there is only so much time to learn it. i have wondered time and again if i can do this or that or make this quicker... i am sure in time i will learn more. in the meantime i am using features as i learn them if they work for me. i want to know if there is an easier/quicker way to mark finds and dnf's in gsak? besides manually entering them. is there a way to get gsak to update its info on caches? is there a way to take the cache info and put it on a map with caches in the area showing up on the same map? i am sure there are many other things i have wondered with gsak. Monty
  11. i too will have to try the vertical position to see if it helps or not. slow refresh on maps as well as slow update location are prolly my biggest issues with the GC. batt life is ok, but not as good as i hoped it would be considering it claims 18hrs. i do know the lithium batts are alot better then the alkalines. thinkin i might want to give rechargeables a go due to the one time expense and then recharge them after that. will see. Monty
  12. i have always considered IA to be midwest. i grew up in ia then moved to CA then to MN. just getting back to IA recently. when i got into caching recently i found it odd that IA wasnt in the midwest Monty
  13. we are on GC #2 right now. the first one bricked a cpl days after i did the 1.4 update. at that time we had had it less than a week. had this one a week and decided to give it a go and updated it to 1.4 last night. worked ok today. hope it works tomorrow as well. slowly i am learning things about this GC. too bad there isnt a way to get first hand play by play on how to do things with it. for now it is learn as i go. prolly doesnt help much that this is our first gpsr as well as are new to caching... however this thread is useful as i would like to give multis a go soon Monty
  14. i too have wondered about this. any help is appreciated. Monty
  15. http://www.iowageocachers.org/ specifically the event page http://www.iowageocachers.org/content/event-info idk how keen you are on driving but there is this event that is to have a 101 and 201 class http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...28-432fa61e8e4f there might be others closer. say in IL. we have been at this just a short time now. what we have learned is by reading the forums and geocaching.com alot. as well as getting out and about. we have some finds and some dnfs and a cpl that we know are there but have not given up yet. not to the dnf point yet on them good luck Monty
  16. thanx for the words on this. i just hope it gets better with time. as sometimes it is verry frustrating. Monty
  17. subscribing to this as i find it great. i like working with my hands, but idk if i have the skills to do something like this. heck idk if i could even solve one, but i still like it
  18. so any gpsr that doesnt have electronic compass doesnt need calibrating or anything special done to it? i have an explorist GC and sometimes it is close (under 15ft) other times way off (50+ft). granted i have only found 15 so far, but i have logged 6 dnf and 2 others we ran out of daylight as we kept getting dif readings from the gpsr. gets frustrating at times when you are going to it and well you dont see anything close that it could be. or all the sudden it is behind you or off in a dif direction then what it just told you. is there any best speed to be going to get the best readings? Monty
  19. bricked huh? we returned out explorist GC this past saturday to best buy as it froze on us friday night. tried and tried and tried to get it to do anything besides nothing. did the fancy key combo i read on the forums here and it took me to the grey screen that give you options across the top, but did nothing. it was less than 10 days old so we took it back and they gave us a new one. i had done the firmware update on within the first wk through vantage point software. and it seemed ok. then i signed up on magellans site and grabbed the firmware that way when it froze on us. so far with the new one i am on the firmware it shipped with. i dont wanna freeze this one. scares me alot.
  20. verry creative and it looks like it works Monty
  21. hmmmm guess i hadnt thought about mounting ours to the bike....
  22. so we stopped into best buy today and they said yes we could bring it back to them. i so got the impression i had to get in touch with magellan. so we went home and got the GPS and headed down the road to the one we bought it at as they had another one in stock. we were also going that way for roller derby so it was a win win i think. anyways they had no issue exchanging the GC that was frozen for a new one. will set it up in the AM so we can get back to caching tomorrow. the girl we talked to at the one store and the male we talked to at the other store both are cachers. which was cool. i so hope we dont have issues with this new one. as it was a great day to get out and cache today, but we were unable to. since i installed GSAK i am gonna go with that to put stuff on the new GC. now to do a few more PQ's and call it good. Monty
  23. well i was hoping to not have to come back to this thread and say i have this issue, but here i am and i have this freezing issue. had our GC since 7/29. getting going was a breeze. installed vantage point got the new firmware. ran many PQ's got them into VP and onto the GC.... 3 days ago i had the freeze issue and having had a BB 8330 i know all about battery pulls to get things working right. so i did that and all was good. 2 days ago i decided i wanted more flexibility and got GSAK yesterday after getting many PQ's into GSAK i decided i wanted to load the GC from GSAK.... so i loaded caches onto the GC with GSAK. seemed pretty painless. last night late it froze again on me. i have tried and tried and tried and am now frustrated. following along with the update instructions it says to unplug and boot the GC then plug in....well if it will not boot then that is not an option. right? so i did the menu+up+power to get the grey screen for developers. then i tried the update. well it appears to be good, but again in there it says to unplug boot then plug in....whether i unplug or leave plugged in i cannot get it to boot at the end of the update process. so now i sit here wanting to cache as the weather is to be ok today, but unable to as my GC either is off after a battery pull. or it is on the boot screen with the compass going in cirlces and it not booting. guess i call magellan on monday and see what the next step is.... grrrrrr Monty
