  1. if i am caching in the city or a park i know......... no gun. if i am going into a unknown area i bring my .45, i have been in some creepy areas and glad i had my gun with me. a dog came charging me, my son and a friend. turned out he was freindly and wanted to check us out,had he not been friendly and was going to hurt one of us his owners could drag him out and burry him. been in acouple other places where i heard adult voices in the woods of a urban area, i can't think of to many reasons to be in there so i found the cache and got the hell out. i feel it is like the old reagen election slogan if you are't as big as the bear should'nt you at least be as strong as the bear.
  2. i have gone alone to quite a few, but if i am going into the woods and it is just me or me and my son i bring my .45. i have my concealed permit and there have been a couple times i have un snapped but never un holstered.
  3. washington state dot uses a garmin gpsmap 76s
  4. it's all about getting outside with your family and finding new places you have never been before. besides you might just come across some piece of junk you migh actually need
  5. i really like GSAK it is very simple to use and can send the way points right to your gps . and can send the cords to topozone so you can get a better idea on the terrain you will be searching.
  6. i the permit and i pack, i have been in a couple creepy areas and glad i had my side arm. i have never had to un holster it but when going out into some of these urban woods with my son i would rather have the averages on my side.
  7. that would be my suggestion of a member only cache. 30 bucks a year is a small price to pay to help the site, and if you are willing to put out the 30 bucks you are most likely willing to place/trade better items if designated by the cache page, as well as putting a copy of the page in the cache as a reminder.
  8. told my wife about the GPSMAP 76S after i bought it, she tool it pretty well but she does say i am a geek.
  9. those are the best i have a pair of blunt nose a pair af normal and two of the 85's wich i use the most, between fishing and work the one handed opening action i love
  10. broken legs......... but how about those fingers. if it's going to be a month then shoot the owner a email and say hey i am going to a place in a month or so and will place it then or hey i broke my legs so it might be awhile. i would feel much better about that then it just sitting stagnant. i see it as a matter of courtesy, which is why if i know i can't move it in one to two weeks i don't take it.
  11. i luv my bronco it takes me whever i want to go even at 2.4+ a gallon but i don't care i am out having fun finding new places i have never been. besides i would rather spend the money on gas then siting at home, this way i only need basic cable so am saving money there
  12. i keep pens new batteries still in ther package a watch that works unregistered tb i just got some micro container to put in caches and usually some toys i placed a mini mag lite in a cache because i had a couple.
  13. I feel if you can't move it along in under one to two weeks don't take a tb.I picked up my first geocoin a little while back and by a week out a was pulling my hair out because i had not moved it along yet. boy did i feel better when i placed it.
  14. I agree that toys aren't a bad thing in this sport. I don't understand the desire to get rid of them in exchange for adult interest only items. After all, if we get rid of the toys...the kids will just be trading for the items you may actually want, rather then the toys you don't. I'm also rather surprised with the continual reference to newbies being targeted as the culprits of poor trading practices. I believe it's quite the contrary. I would think that newbies are overly excited about the sport and still willing to invest more. It's been our experience that mega-cachers (for lack of a better name), refering to cachers trying to crame in a mass out of caches in one day, are more likely the ones to trade quickly & poorly in a quest to get-in-get-out-get-on-to-the-next-one. If they're hitting 20+ caches in a short time, clearly they won't invest a lot of money in each trade item (nor want to carry an overly heavy swag bag filled with quality items). Twenty plus caches at $2.00 a pop...ouch! That could be an expensive way to spend a day. Reality is: (a sad fact I had to recently resign myself to as well) In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes...and cheap swag. -- Benjamin Franklin there has been more than one time where i would not let my son trade any thing because either i forgot to grab my back pack with trade items or we just have any thing that was a eqal to what we found. i think it all comes down to personal responsabilty as a cacher or change the web site to members only. so that there is a vested intrest in taking care of the caches. perhaps people should heed a cache page better when it has a theme to it , make a please no Mc toy cache. I try to put better trade items in the member only caches because those are the people helping to pay for the site which makes this not only possible but very user friendly. oh and i love the BF quote.
  15. given that this sport is family freindly then toys should be expected. what could really be in a cache that as an adult you really must have. toys are great for the kids even if it is a fast food toy. on the harder to find caches i try to leave better things, but on most caches i sign the log and leave a pen or a toy or nothing.
  16. if i find a tb and think that i can not rehide it in least a week i don't take it. i have two out there that have been sitting in a users hands for at least a month. i figure it wants to move so move it already.
  17. there have been many easy one it took me a long time to find and hard ones i found right off and it usually comes down to paintence.
  18. the thing that gets me is a micro that has a hint but it is some cryptic message. i try to make mine as plain as possible.
  19. i am 300 lbs and geocaching has gotten me out of the house alot more so hopefully the weight will come down............... hey i just weighed my self and i am 290 now so this is working.
  20. i have a geko 201 and just bought a gpsmap 76s from my uncle, and i love them both.
