  1. No offense, but wouldn't a cheap eTrex or even a Geko be more appropriate that spending the cash for a 60C? There is a used Legend CX on the forum here that might fit the bill. Just trying to be helpful.
  2. Thanks all for the input, I just uploaded the maps from MapSource directly onto the card, worked fine. Only one problem, the Legend doesn't recognize the maps on the card, only shows the basemap. Well, at least I've got the 32MB card to use...
  3. Ok, thank you, I'll try that. We're heading cross country tomorrow morning, so this was sort of a last minute thing. I'll remember to have my maps uploaded a week before next time!!
  4. Hmm. May be a stupid question, but can you tell me how that works? Is there a link to an article or FAQ on that? I wouldn't mind doing that for now anyway so I can get the maps uploaded I wanted to use. TIA-
  5. Thanks for the replies. The card was formatted in FAT32. I'll look at getting a SanDisk.
  6. Hey all. I recently purchased and have been trying out this new Legend Cx model, no problems until yesterday when I installed a new 128MB MicroSD card and attempted to load maps. I had previously used the included 32mb card to load some map data without a problem. Last night I went through the process of uploading about 108MB of maps onto the 128MB card. It failed every time due to a communication error or some other issue. I found the firmware update for the Cx and the Mapsource software update, installed them and tried again. I did a hard reset on the unit twice, formatted the card, etc. I even trimmed the maps down to less than 50MB with no success. Every time the Garmin still shows 'uploading data' on the display as if no error occurred. I was then forced to trim the maps down to about 29MB so they would fit on the original card, and they uploaded to the original 32MB card with no issues. Thus I suspect there is either a problem with this specific card, or the formatting on it, or something else altogether. The card will read on my PC when fitted into it's SD adapter card (so will the original 32MB). I did note that after the failure to write data to the Legend, I popped the card into the PC and it did show the 'Garmin' directory with a data file in it, so it is apparently communicating somewhat. It's a 'Ridata' 'Ritek' MicroSD card, if it matters. Anyone have any issues like this?
  7. I'll agree the Geko 201 is a great unit, but probably too small for the original poster to read..
  8. I'm quite sure they're talking about the original, B&W eTrex Legend. AFAIK, the Legend C & Legend Cx have newer better chipsets with much better reception.
  9. Depends on what you mean by 'case', but I like the Gilsson case I got, you can find them on gilsson.com or several vendors sell them on eBay.
  10. Currently own and use: Garmin Vista (looking to sell), Garmin Geko 201 Just got, have yet to use: Garmin Legend Cx I like the Legend Cx for all around mapping, driving directions, hiking, geocaching, but the Geko is great for when you want to be unobtrusive with the GPSr, I can basically hide it in the palm of my hand, and it works great for just taking along to check mileage, etc.
  11. They can probably retrieve the serial electronically, or like you said, it may be inside the case. The equipment I work on have redundant serial numbers stored electronically, this is how I recently came upon a stolen piece of equipment and was able to return it to the owner (well, the PD came and took it away, I assume it'll be returned to them sometime).
  12. Are you getting WAAS correction data when your LegendCx is leading you 60' astray? I.e. do you see the little "D's" on the signal strength bars on the satellite page? I'm with peter on this one; have you actually acquired a WAAS satellite, given the unit a little time to download pertinent data from the sats and then seen the 'D' on your signal bars? How many satellites do you typically acquire? Have you compared the number of and number on the sats with your friend's GPSr? What models are they working with?
  13. FOR SALE (1) Garmin eTrex Vista (B&W), used. Includes a combination 12v cig plug adapter & serial cable, and a nice Gilsson neoprene carry case. I do not have the original box or manual (manual can be downloaded off Garmin's site). I have taken very good care of this unit, it works perfectly. I just tested the unit with WAAS on yesterday (2-25-06) down to 7 feet. There are NO scratches on the display, there may be one or two tiny scuffs on the unit casing. Photos available on request, please IM or email. Will upload MetroGuide V6 maps, area of your choosing (within the allotted memory, of course). Asking $150. SHIPPED (UPS GROUND 48 contiguous only, air freight additional) For all those asking 'why am I selling', I just upgraded to a Legend Cx.
  14. Segerguy> You're absolutely right! And I agree that if someone knows of a good deal on something, I want to know about it. I just don't know that the rules can be made any better than they already are, without someone to police all activity and ensure that 'neighborly advice' is just that.
  15. Interesting thread; I'm of the opinion that a 'hot deals' thread is a good idea, but how can you monitor that the actual post is a 'geocacher' simply performing an altruistic act by posting a lead to a cheap GPSr or similar? In other words, whats to prevent a business owner or affiliate to sign up in the forum as a regular user and post 'hey I found a good deal over at...' once a week or so? What's to keep the same people from sending a PM to select users trying to find a good deal? Regarding eBay links, I think folks wanting to sell on eBay should do so, and not provide a link to their sale. If you want to sell to users on the forum, do so and don't simply advertise your eBay auction hoping to gain more bids. It is, IMHO, a commercial advertisement.
  16. From what I understand, you must not only turn on WAAS mode, but also lock onto a WAAS satellite (35 in my neck of the woods). http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=9
  17. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the Garmin, simply because I've only owned Garmin receivers and am most familiar with them. That being said, might I ask what the conditions are that you have the ability to get a GPSr through your husband's company? Are they giving you a GPSr or are you still paying for one? If you're not getting the unit for free, and if you can give us an idea of your budget, I'm sure we can all recommend a much more updated, better alternative.
  18. Alright, these have been out a month or so, can I get some opinions from you that have upgraded? I'm looking at upgrading my old eTrex Vista, was looking for a Legend C, but may as well spend a little extra for the Cx model. Any noticably better reception for those that have had eTrex models previously? Also, for those that have the C / Cx models, what sort of bike clamp does it come with? Is it the nice bike clamp they show as an accessory? (model 010-10267-00) TIA
  19. Depends on your definition of 'cheap'. Some of the early Garmin eTrex models that are very good for geocaching can be had for as little as $50 at various sources online.
  20. Any specific model or features you're looking for?
