  1. Amazing!! I know of a chain link fence near a high school that already has a plethora of locks locked to it. How I would love to add this one to it!! That lock is Awesome! You could sell those on Flee Bay!
  2. Pace yourself, it's only a hobby... It should be a fun thing. For me, this is one of several leisure activities I enjoy. The gas prices are a real concern. Geocaching usually gets worked in while doing other things (camping, hiking, canoing, working out of town) to help keep gas costs down. Only occasionally, do I make a day of it. Then I will plan on going to a area of interest, so even if I have a bunch of DNF's, I still enjoyed being out for the day.
  3. +1 Yeah, I get the glazed over eyes look too. Maybe one in ten sound interested on a good day. I'm not too worried.
  4. +1 That worked as well for me. I also printed out "Hard Reset" instructions and have it stored inside the battery door. Which are: >Press & Hold: Page+Mark+Enter+Power buttons, all at the same time. >Release all but the power button. >Keep holding down the power button for a few seconds more. >Unit should reset and then power up. Good Luck
  5. I'm using a Delorme, and have a long neckstrap with one metal D-ring on the end. Unit seems to work just fine. I think the D-ring is far enough from the body of the unit not to cause any havoc.
  6. I have purchased two refurbished pro cameras, and one Garmin GPS. Look like new, perfect working condition. I'd buy again in a heartbeat, if the price is right.
  7. The other night we were on the side of the road looking for a cache with flashlight. A truck stops and asks if we need help, I thanked him. said we're good, just looking for a mud flap I saw rolling off our car. My daughter bit her tongue, trying not to laugh, on how a mud flap "rolls" off a car. Now I've got a couple of better lines to use.
  8. +1 That is one of my pet-peeves. People need to realize there is some responsibility to "owning a cache" If your not willing to read the logs, check on it and maintain it, don't even bother placeing a cache. I'd rather find 5 well maintained caches, than 50 soggy log caches from a cacher that can't maintain them.
  9. Yeah, non working earlier today with me. I realize they get hammered on the weekend, but we are paying for this service and would like it working when we need it. Just my friendly rant.
  10. Yeah, gas prices are making me change my habits a bit. I drive small/mid size pick-up, and won't just jump in, and go for a ride to pick-up just a couple of caches when I have some free-time. I plan them into my trips when I'm in an area, or vacationing, or can park and walk and pick-up several at a clip. Another option is team up with another cacher for a afternoon and split the cost. Did that this last weekend. Went on a afternoon power park & grab run of newly placed caches in our area.
  11. Just a heads-up for cache owners in small towns. Make a friend, and report your hide to your town L.E.O. Don't assume that most law enforcement are aware of Geocaching activities. I stopped in today at our local law enforcement to double check, and see if they knew about Geocaching. They didn't have a clue what it was. I explained it, dropped off my downtown cache hide page description, and left him a brochure (available on the geocaching.com site) that explains the sport. He was super nice, and was really appreciative of the fact that I gave him a heads up of what and where caches are located in our community. I explained it brings people/families to an area/town that might not otherwise come to the area. They thought it was a pretty neat/fun hobby, and was very positive about the whole thing. I realize not all L.E.O.'s may be as open minded, but this was a very positive meeting for our town.
  12. I've had the older Delorme PN-40 for about a year now. IMHO, the maps that come with this unit are exceptional. Hard to beat for the price. I bought this unit with NO prior GPS experience. And had zero problems figuring it out. Very intuitive, and found my first cache within an hour of playing with it. I know Garmin and Magellan get a lot of attention, but don't rule this company out. Customer service/tech support is top notch.
  13. I was doing some web reviews on what automotive GPS to buy. I kept seeing info/features on "geocaching" and did a Google search on it. I knew a little about it already, and first thought it was things hidden in the deepest most remote parts of the back country, out in the puke weeds. I was blown away when I found the geocaching site and did a search in my area! Tons of geocaches! I went out that day with my automotive unit and found my first and was hooked. Two months later I had a hand held and was off and running.
  14. Tried to log into the web site in the afternoon and couldn't get in. The server was hammered. I entered my finds this morning for the 10-10 record. Not sure it will count.
  15. I use billion-dollar satellites to find tupperware in the woods... What's your hobby?
  16. Not sure if the low self discharge with the low capacity mAh are the best overall performance . The high capacity 2600mAh NIMH are only $1.59 Just buy a few extras and charge up before you head out caching. I can usually get a couple of weeks shelf life on a charge
  17. We use these batteries and condition chargers at our photo studio, they take a pounding and hold a charge a long time. Inexpensive, great service, and work very well in my Delorme PN-40. http://www.all-battery.com/aa2600mahhighca...blebattery.aspx http://www.all-battery.com/tenergyT9688uni...arger01127.aspx
  18. The Garmin 255W is a nice automotive unit with some pretty good deals around right now, new and reconditioned. Works in a pinch for pedestrian use and geocaching. It was my main geocache unit until I upgraded to a Delorme hand held.
  19. I created a pocket query for the destination of our vacation with a radius of 25 miles. I also just made a pocket query for the route to our destination. What happens when you load them both into a GPS with duplicated caches where the route and radius intersect? I assume the unit will just combine both pocket queries and see the duplicated caches as one? And my total cache count input for the two queries to the GPS would be a bit less, as some are the same caches between the two queries? I plan on loading both queries into two different GPS'rs. Delorme PN-40 and a Garmin Nuvi 255W Thanks in advance.
  20. This happend to me once when I let the unit with rechargeable Nimah batteries run all the way down. From the Delorme web-site try: Press: Page+ Mark+Enter+Power all at the same time. Release all but the power button. Keep holding the power button for a few seconds. This should cause the unit to go into a "hard reset/power up".
  21. Another good option is this: http://www.all-battery.com/aa2600mahhighca...blebattery.aspx Very inexpensive, 2600mA, and they last. We use them in all our portable lights etc at our photography studio and that's some grueling conditions for a battery. I'd recommend their controlled charger as well.
  22. Must be defective... I can get a good day, to day and a half of Geocaching out of mine.
  23. Yes! You will recoup your money in paper and ink cartridges in a short time, plus it supports the the site.
  24. I just got started in this hobby a few months ago and was in the same boat on which unit to buy. I was trying to decide between the Garmin Legend HCx, 60 SCx, or the Delorme PN-40. I didn't know much about going "paperless" and didn't think it be that big of deal. After going out a couple of times with my Nuvi and printed pages, I thought this is going to be a real pain! I went with the Delorme PN-40. I've used it for about a month now and love it. IMHO it's a great unit. Best bang for the buck. The "paperless" feature is wonderful. I also like the size of the unit. Fits great in the hand, is waterproof, very rugged, accurate, and the screen is very easy to read in all conditions. As mentioned, the Ariel or satellite imagery that you can overlay on the topo map is fantastic! I've been a Garmin fan for a long time on automotive units, but didn't like having to fork out another $100 on top of the GPS price to purchase a decent set of maps from Garmin. Delorme gives you really good sets of maps right out of the gate. The annual $29. unlimited download of all their specialty maps also sealed the deal. Bought mine from Amazon for a bit above your $200. limit.
  25. Try a powered USB hub. Some issues with certain mother boards/USB ports and the PN-40. See this thread from Delorme: http://forum.delorme.com/viewtopic.php?f=1...97&start=45 I couldn't find any powered USB ports and had a PCI USB card installed and it solved the problem. This is the USB card I had installed and it works fine. This was added to a new computer only a few months old running windows 7. http://www.startech.com/item/PCI220USBLP-L...rnal-ports.aspx
