  1. Yep, that was my hope. I realize it's not perfect, but it might produce a list of interesting caches that could be manually whittled down...
  2. Would it be possible to add the ability to sort PQs by the number of times caches appear on watchlists and/or bookmarks? That is, create a PQ where caches only appear if some minimum number of watchlists or bookmarks point to them.
  3. I am not sure I follow the reasoning above. While it is hard to give credence to a person with zero hides just because a person has only a handful of hides does not make that person less valuable to listen to. To defend my "credibility" I'd say the issue is not the total number of hides but rather the ratio of number of hides to number of finds and the time involved in caching. I've hidden 5, found 100, and been doing this 5 months. Not bad compared to most. But certainly not in SixDogTeam's league... My remarks were lighthearted and pitched more to poke gentle fun at the micro in 10 acres of woods crowd rather than micros in general.
  4. I was back in Chicagoland for my brother's wedding and was appalled at the density of micros in the suburban parks! Geez, there are more traditional tupperware containers in the City of Philadelphia than within 20 km of my mom's house in Arlington Hts IL, which is 25 km OUTSIDE Shytown. Now, I understand urban micros. But suburban micros in places where a tupperware container would do just fine? What gives?
  5. Congrats Ben! Why didn't you tell me? We could've had a celebratory Frosty Jr, but now it's too late...
  6. Well, worst fears confirmed. The USB port appears to be bad, so the unit's going back to Olathe...
  7. Thanks for all the replies! Tried to get my GPSr to talk to my PC at work. No luck there either, so I called Garmin. After a 35 (!) minute wait, I spoke to Rick who was very helpful. He tentatively concluded the USB port on the unit is kaputt. I'll doublecheck with a friend's cable and computer (which he claims is functional).
  8. Has anyone had difficulty getting their PC to talk to a Garmin unit over the supplied USB cable? If I let the Found New Hardware Wizard run, it ends by saying: an error occured during installation of this device--the installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance. Also, the Found New Hardware Wizard calls the new connection an Unknown USB Device. If I specify the device to add, Garmin USB GPS, and tell it where to find the drivers (I've got the latest download from Garmin), device manager says "this device cannot start (code 10). I noticed on Garmin's USB FAQ that some Advanced USB Host Controllers are not compatible. I have a plain vanilla host controller manufactured by VIA, one of the offending vendors. Any ideas on a workaround, short of just buying a serial cable? I'm waiting to hear from Garmin, but that could take days... Thanks, Jim.
  9. For Sale: used Garmin eTrex Legend and PC serial cable (asking $75), MapSource MetroGuide North America V6 ($80), a car bracket ($15), and the car charger cable ($20). I'm willing to sell them separately, if need be, but I'd prefer a package deal (say $175 for the whole schmear). I'm willing to entertain any reasonable offer...prices are before shipping. You can email me at mccambridge@ieee.org to place your order or ask questions.
  10. My family just started recently. I have owned an eTrex Legend for a couple of years--I like gadgets and there are few gadgets out there with a higher coolness-to-cost ratio than a GPSr. Initially I think I rationalized it as a tool to avoid getting lost or to find alternate ways between work and home when the highway's jammed. Anyway, my mom sent me an article about geocaching from the hometown paper. She wanted to know had I ever heard of such a thing? A few weeks later, we got on a plane to visit her and I brought my eTrex. With nothing better to do one night, I got on the web on my Treo (yep, another gadget) and looked up geocaching.com. I was hooked! I found a couple of local caches, stored them in memory and announced the next morning we'd go out geocaching as a family. Mom, sis, wife, two boys (4 and 1), and me packed into the car and headed out in search of N42 04.487 W87 56.648 "Where's the Hill?" We drove ~ 4 km, parked, and found the cache in about 20 minutes. Nothing special, except a light went on in my head: my wife and kids seemed to have fun, we were outdoors, and I was actually putting my 2 year old investment to good use. A winning combination! I've taken the boys out the last few weekends to find easy local caches--so much easier on my conscience than sitting in front of the TV...
