  1. Ha me and boy boy did this one and he insisted on taking his "Walkie-Talkie" so we probably looked even more dodgy ( didn't get stopped though) Slight aside to the above, when I was a nipper I used to deliver papers to Gatcombe house, because the round I did was all the outlying areas the bloke who owned the papershop used to drive me around,As we used to drive right up the drive of Gatcombe House I guess they knew his car so it was not an issue, however one day he was in a courtesy car and we got about half way up the drive before we were stopped by fully tooled up Police :-) turned out apart from us being in a different Car Mummy was staying as well so extra security also I used to have to open a back door to a kitchen and leave the papers on a table, one day as I opened the door a dog ran in and did a big poo on the carpet
  2. Always late to the party I can't find the codes online am I being super dim?

  9. i had problems today with logging in too
  10. I would get an iPhone they are clearly the best *runs and hides under desk* </tongue firmly in cheek>
  11. I already posted this in the chat room but for anyone that missed here it is again so you can laugh at me too Today I spend about 40 minutes looking for a cache before I realised the coords in my GPSr were in fact for the car park not the cache. what a muppet and then as if to confirm my muppet status, when I got home I stood on a rake, cartoon styleee and got it full force in the side of the head
  12. On the whole that is true, but I do have one WinMobile phone that has a better GPSr than any of my numerous dedicated GPS receivers. Regrettably, that particular phone is poor quality in other respects. I have purchased the iPhone app, but found it to be of limited use. I always carry an up to date offline database of about 2000 caches in my Oregon and 4000 in my WinMobile phone/GPS. On the rare occasions I find myself outside that area without having pre-planned it the iPhone app does let me see what is nearby, always assuming I am in radio reception which is frequently not the case when I'm caching. But the application is difficult to use to find a cache some distance away so you can navigate to it, and the poor GPSr in most cases makes it not very attractive to use when close to the cache. I'll keep this brief as some of it is not caching related. Email is crippled, especially attachments and even more so attachments that need to be transferred to/from a notebook. And that goes in spades if you are roaming (abroad). You can only run one app at a time. This may not sound too bad to you, but to an experienced WinMobile user it's absurd - I normally run at least half a dozen at the same time. It means if you are running, for example, MemoryMap, and want to make a phone call, or check emails, you have to completely shut down everything you're doing! And it's worse. If you just want to turn WiFi on/off, or adjust the brightness or other settings, you have to shut everything off first! Apps are forbidden by Apple to run in the background, and forbidden from co-operating with each other. MemoryMap is now available, and I've bought it, but this political limitation means it will not be possible for the most excellent MemoryMap/CacheMate combination to be implemented on the iPhone. Battery life is a joke, it only runs MemoryMap continuously for about 3 hours, and the battery is not replaceable! I have purchased a MiLi power case, which helps. My WinMobile phone runs MemoryMap continuously for 11 hours, and the spare battery would extend that to 22 hours if necessary. With the MiLi case, the iPhone is twice as big as any of my WinMobile phones, weighs twice as much, and it can now achieve a battery life of a bit over half what the WinMobile phone can do even without the spare battery! Communications with a PC generally are crippled, e.g. a file browser that just lets you copy files around over USB or even WiFi is forbidden. This leads to apps having to implement inconsistent and cumbersome methods to transfer data. MemoryMap and Stanza are 2 examples of apps that are unnecessarily awkward as a result. There is no external storage provided, e.g. uSD. Currently the 32GB on board is sufficient, but I'm sure I'll run out in the not too distant future and it's not possible to upgrade it. This also prevents the transfer of files to a PC, which most likely is why they did it that way. I'm acutely uncomfortable with the backup provided, I feel I have no control over it whatsoever and I don't trust it to work if and when I need it. The prohibition on proper file utilities, and on apps sharing data, makes alternatives impossible. Bluetooth is crippled. Initial entry of documents isn't too bad, but editing existing documents is extremely cumbersone. The ban on apps running interpreters means Java is forbidden, the only way to write apps is using their development system, and adhering to their licensing terms that leave Apple with full control over what you are allowed to do. This is only a summary, if you want more details I'll email them to you. Rgds, Andy but IT does look lovely I do love my iPhone ( as stated before) but I do agree with some of the stuff Andy said especially the fact you can't run stuff in the background although I hear this will be addressed on the next os update. Funny that with all their control Apple have become what they once stood against. A long time ago now, I know but their famous 1984 Advert rings a bit hollow now.
  13. no, because with other phones you don't have to pay $10 for a geocaching application, and also you're missing out on the "omg i'm so cool" factor. Much as I love it I don't need my iPhone to let people know I am cool, they know that all ready
  14. agreed there are plenty of other smartphone on the market but as I use Macs for work ( and home) it is easy to sync everything ( and plus I am a sucker for shiny kit )
  15. As much I hate the Apple control and Walled Garden of the iPhone, it is a great device, not saying it is better that standalone products, dedicated products are always going to be better but you can't argue at the convenience of the iPhone, in one device and used pretty much daily on mine... Phone, Diary, Memos, ipod, games, gps, video, guitar tuner, email.
  16. By Dip it Do you mean log it in then straight back out? Thanks MrsB
  17. sorry another question Today I wend to a local cache as it was meant to have a TB and I have not "bagged" one yet so off I go in the rain It is listed at being at GC1TZ2H but I get there and no TB but I had a look at nearby GC1TZ44 at there it is. So what do I do pretend I picked it up at GC1TZ2H where the inventory says it is or do I list it as being picked up from GC1TZ44/ thanks WD
  18. off topic but a good excuse for a bad joke ( I don't really need a reason for a bad joke) A World Renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps is browsing in a music store, when he spies an album titled "Wasp sounds from around the Globe". Naturally, being a World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps he is curious and asks the young chap behind the counter if he can have a listen to "Wasp sounds from around the Globe". A few seconds later the World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps is standing at one of those little sound stations with his headphones on and a puzzled expression on his face. He removes the Headphones, walks back to the counter and catches the young sales persons attention. "Excuse me" he says, "I'm A World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps and I've just been listening to "Wasp sounds from around the Globe", and I must say, there appears to be some mistake. Those are no Wasp sounds with which I am familiar". The young man dutifully checks the recording in question and assures the World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps that he is indeed listening to "Wasp sounds from around the Globe". Puzzled, the World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps returns to the headphones and once again begins to listen. After a few seconds he once again returns to the counter and accosts the young fellow here. ""Excuse me" he says, "As I mentioned before, I am a World renowned expert in the sounds of European Wasps and I've just been listening to "Wasp sounds from around the Globe" and I have to say again, those are no Wasp sounds with which I am familiar. Are you certain I have been listening to the correct recording?" Slightly exasperated by now, the young man checks the record currently playing and with a slightly sheepish grin confesses: "Oops, sorry Sir, I seem to have played you the Bee side anyone seen my coat..
  19. Thanks for all that great advice. When I nipped out at lunch for another local one i used my iPhone to get to roughly the right area then put the cords in my forerunner which took me straight to GZ. So I think I will stick with this set up for now
  20. Had my first muggle experience today, It was a lone woman with a a dog, so honesty was the best policy I did not want to worry her. Poor lady having a fat short haired 30 something pop out the bushes just in front of her
  21. After I dropped the kids of to school and on the way to work, I stopped for a quick find( obsessed me?) It was in some woods but with parking close. The iphone did not work at all in teh woods and thinking of my last finds on the phone I guess I used the maps more than the waypoints if you understand. I have a Garmin forerunner 305 which lets you download waypoints so I am going to give it a go later. Anyway all this is a preamble to that question which no doubt gets asked alot Which GPS should I get? I have looked at the e trex H, which seems to be ronseal( does what it says on the tin;) is it a false economy starting with a cheaper unit? Or will that do me for a while. thanks again for the warm welcome and answering all my Noob questions
  22. plus one to this thats why I am doing it, wanted a crack for ages but could not justify 90 plus quid just to have a try. So the iphone app was great for me ( had the lite version for my first find but upgraded to the full version straight after)
