  1. OK, just going back to my original post for a sec... Having sent an email to the local Public Rights of Way team last week, I've received no reply whatsoever Very disappointing, given that the local council workers have regular access to email (I know, I am one), but I also acknowledge that not everyone in our glorious organisation can be bothered. So instead, I've emailed the local Countryside Rangers, as they're always nice people (I've worked with them in the past). Hopefully, they should be able to clarify a few things, and may possibly be able to provide some help with the project As ever, I'll let you all know what happens!
  2. Hmmm... interesting idea (Chamber of Commerce), thanks Fortunately, that's one thing that's established both in the States where you are, and here in the UK I'm hoping (with luck) that there are at least a couple of Countryside Rangers I used to know still working for the local Council. That way, it will make it a LOT easier getting permission to place caches, as they know what kind of person I am and that any cache will be safe! It also means that they may offer to check in on it every now and then, as they're quite friendly people.
  3. Yeah it must be by foot They can't expect us to be happy with just streets after all
  4. You may most certainly claim that... it may be afterall
  5. Ah right, no probs Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck with working this out though, and do let us know how you get on
  6. RobDJr - that's basically what I was trying to say too Nicely expanded though, and you have some good points there. If you don't look/search, you *can't* find - but if you do look/search (e.g. at Ground zero) then you *could* find.
  7. Briansnat - that's a fantastic letter/email template! I've been scratching my head over how to word correspondance to the local council, over gaining permission to place a geocache, but that sounds spot on
  8. I dislike Nano's because they don't allow the storage of trinkets. [ChaceGuild]
  9. I didn't say "all" did I And the OP didn't ask for "all" NT land. But if they do require that, I'm sure the National Trust would be able to provide the information easily, and possibly at least approximate number of caches on those properties. Worth a try
  10. And according to the Groundspeak e-Newsletter I got earlier, the 1 millionth *active* cache was published sometime on the 8th March So anyone that got a cache published on 8th March can say "Mine may be the millionth active"
  11. Aaaah, you had me going there for a bit And cheers for the ding!
  12. Just to add on the whole "blurring" issue: Street View is supposed to blurr out both faces and company logos. Faces is easy - privacy, but logos is because Google don't want to get hit for a TONNE of advertising bills from companies Weirdly, it works as a double-whammy when it comes to KFC - they blurr out Colonel Sanders' face Oddly, they managed to get the symbol on my parents' car, but not my brother's Micra?
  13. OS do it perfectly well - it's surrounded by a purple border Sorry, have been doing *a lot* of OS map work recently, and it seems an easy answer to me Not your fault, it's just information overload causing a grudge against it to develop!
  14. Sorry, see edited version Thorn in the Side
  15. Norsch gets the DING And the theme is... old quarries... but yours is a coastal one by the looks of it? GCWA04 Thorn in the Side Thornwick Bay by any chance
  16. Of the pictures listed with the caches I've searched for/will search for, most are of the "surrounding area", and some even have the finders holding the cache That's not to say it's "the done thing", but that they do get published on the cache listings. I suppose that so long as your photo doesn't give anything away as to the precise location of the cache, you're good to go - cos who's any the wiser?
  17. Even though I'm a newbie, here's my twopenneth about the whole DNF issue: If you actually go looking for the cache, get within the general area (100ft is max inaccuracy of a GPSr right?), but don't find it for whatever reason, that's a DNF However... If you get to the general area, but can't search for the cache (too many muggles, weather, tired, etc.) then it's not a DNF as you couldn't search close enough. In these instances, I'd log a "Note" rather than a DNF, and did so for the one cache out of 13 I've attempted, but was been muggled away from The only 2 caches I've DNF'd were ones I actually made a proper attempt on - got within well under 100ft, and just couldn't find them! To me, that makes them "not found", so I Did Not Find them
  18. Have just come up with a nickname for the hi-vis vest & clipboard look - *Cacherflage*
  19. Ignore my last - just been on Streetview, and our house is there However - it is OLD imagery! For our street, it's at least 9 months old, as it shows our old car
  20. Is that "will be extending to 95% of the UK"? Or "has been extended"? Because if that's past tense, I guess we're in the 5% that's not going to be covered - a little demeaning if anything else, given we're not exactly in the back-of-beyond
  21. I guess this confusion can be somewhat cleared up by reading the GAGB guidelines - "Respect property rights and seek permission where appropriate. Seek permission on all private property that's not generally open to public access. " Under that guideline, referring back to my original question, I wouldn't need to seek permission. This is because the locations in question are not seen as "private property", and ARE "generally open to public access" However, I'm still going to ask someone at the local council's Public Rights of Way (PRoW) team, just to cover my back When I've got a response from them, I'll be sure to post back here with it.
  22. Just a note on GoogleMaps - I don't use it for coordinates How I use it (if a little longwinded), is to compare the given visual on the individual cache page of Geocaching.com, then plop a point on GoogleMaps on my phone! This is quite often far better than relying on GPS coords alone, and with GoogleMaps having the "Find My Location" feature, it will guide you quite accurately to the point you placed. Best of luck with this
  23. THAT...IS...AWESOME In the inimitable words of Glen Quagmire "Yes! Yes! Get some, yes!"
  24. DING! Well done Madam Cholet Just checked your answer on GoogleMaps Satellite view, and yes, it's Changi Airport Singapore!! Ok, here's one:
  25. Oh come on - you can't beat this beauty: The Lara Croft custom Land Rover Defender I've seen the original at the Heritage Motor Centre (Gaydon), and she's still fully equipped! Everything you could need to go geocaching in rough terrain, and it even comes with a dock for your GPSr/enabled phone
