  1. Yup, grabbed the one at the station, wasn't too difficult, been doing quite a few now, even managed to place my own cache in Sheffield.

I am thoroughly enjoying this hobby and plan on doing a lot more in the future.

I am also attending the event in manchester later this year.

  2. Hi again all.

Having had some difficulty in placing new caches, I was wondering if any reviewers would be willing to speak to me on a one to one basis, so that when I want to find a cache placement, I can discuss it with them before proposing it on the website, which should hopefully save me a lot of messing around in the long run.

A good way to do this, would be to show the reviewer the google earth map of where I am suggesting and they can tell me what steps I need to take before placing the proposed cache.

So, if anyone wants to help a budding but enthusiastic cacher, give me a shout.

  3. I am not a drinker, so, would not feel happy sat in a pub drinking coke.

l'd not worry to much about not drinking, I know in the 2 events I have been to most cachers are driving so a Pub is more of a convenient meeting point than a place to go on a session.

I have not been to that event but would suggest there would be a surprising number of coke drinkers ;) .

Cachers are as a whole a friendly bunch, there is no need to worry. Once you have been to one the problem is excusing yourself from the next one, when you have other commitments :) .

I was replying to what norsch said about forgetting geocaching and get down to the pub, lol,

I am not someone who goes to the pub unless it is for a social gathering, I am totally fine with that, just never been someone who prefers to sit in a pub nursing a pint of bitter/lager while the footy is playing.

I am hoping to go to the ten years of geocaching that is taking place in manchester, but, would love something also close by, or maybe an organisation, who knows, I might end up running one for Sheffield based geocachers, we shall have to see, watch this space.

  4. Sadly, there is no organisation located in my city.

Thankfully though, on a more positive note, I have finally managed to get the cache placed without the reviewer disallowing it, so, my first cache is now finally placed and has had it's first visit this morning.

I apologise for harping on about the subject, but, just wanted other people's opinions and advice, I still have two more cache's that I want to place, but, struggling as to where to place them, one is a nano and one is a magnetic key holder, I was thinking in the city center, but, would that present a whole new bag of problems what with loads of private property and such like ?

I do have a few possible thoughts, but, at the moment, need to do a lot more research on the places I am thinking about, things like visiting the locations, seeing if they are considered high risk terrorist areas and so forth as well as get the correct permission.

See, I have done plenty of reading where the guidelines are concerned, lol.

Thanks so far for the help, keep it coming, it is appreciated.

  5. Only time I do any driving is when I get the use of my partners car, lol.

But, on a serious note, the location I have proposed to place this cache is not a "hang-out" place as such, just that I know that it is used by dog walkers, and that it is a location that has public access all the time.

The problem with placing a cache out of town is the inability for me to maintain it, which is something I would like to be able to do as I am someone who cares about making the hobby fun for others and making sure things are in order with maintained log books and contents.

A lot of people place their caches and tend to forget about them, which is a shame, it is nice to go back to it say in a month or two and refresh the log book and see how much activity it is getting.

Thanks for all the advice so far, it is appreciated, keep it coming, I am listening to everything that is being said and taking it all on board.

Moose Mob - I would love to go to events, but, sadly, there doesn't seem to be any local to me, the only one I know of (that I am also attending) is the 10 years of geocaching at Manchester, so, we shall see what info I can retrieve from that get together.

  6. Well, I have read the guidelines numerous times and I have made sure that the cache is now at least over 200 yards away from the playground, it is also on what I believe to be public land, it is a place where people walk their dogs on a daily basis and is open 24 hours 7 days a week, it is not in view of any windows from neighbouring houses as there are trees surrounding the location, so, unless I have missed something, I cannot see any reason why this time it doesn't get listed (fingers crossed).

The problem is that all the places that seem to be more suitable, like woodlands, seem to be laden down with existing caches, which stops me from placing my own.

The ones I mentioned (the goverment property and the solicitor buildings) are regarding a cache that was right outside a town hall and another one was surrounded by buildings that contained solicitors and legal representatives.

I would have thought that those kinds of locations would be out of bounds due to possible terrorist activity and suspicious packages being placed there.

Whereas a woodland location is not seen as a high risk location for that type of thing, but, again, brings up the problem of the above, other cache's being already placed there.

So, any suggestions of good spots ?

As I said already, I am not arguing the guidelines, just wondering if people can help someone who wants to join in on the fun of placing a cache for others to find.

  7. Am I the only one who finds it difficult to place a new cache ?

I have tried four times to place a cache but every time something has reared it's head, either it has been on private land, not been in a good location, been near a playground or something else.

I am not arguing about the guidelines that are stated regarding placing a cache.

Just wondering if others find it as difficult and want to know if there are any good hints and tips for finding suitable locations ?

I have found caches that could be easily taken to be in unsuitable locations, like close to goverment property or surrounded by solicitor buildings, but, they seem to be allowed.

So, help gladly welcomed on this subject, thanks.

  8. Thanks Keystone.

As regards yorkshire geocaching, I am now a member on the yorkshire website, but, there doesn't seem to be anything about Sheffield Geocaching organisations, so, if someone is a member of one or knows of one in Sheffield (I am unable to travel out of town, as I am a single parent and am busy at weekends going to Manchester to see my partner) then, please let me know.

    Thanks.

  9. Hi everyone, just saying Hi.

I am not specifically a lurker, but, been wanting to start posting on the forum and contributing to the community more now that I have been caching and am learning the ropes so to speak.

Still new to the hobby and thoroughly enjoying the challenges put before me.

Just wish I could meet others in my local area who also enjoy it, fed up with mentioning it to people and getting baffled expressions, so, will check the forum for people seeking out friends to go geocaching with and see what happens.

I shall be around more now that I have made a move to start chatting on here.

  10. Hi guys and gals, I am new to the world of geocaching and have definately caught the bug (not a TB mind you, lol).

I had my first find today in Manchester, where my partner lives, and plan on going back into the city to find more caches, always have to be careful due to a high degree of muggles within the city.

Managed to find 2 caches, found it very enjoyable, looking foward to creating my own sometime in the near future.
