  1. Go for it, run up to them screaming and shouting, ARE YOU CACHING ????? lol, seriously though, of course you'd be fine to approach anyone you see that you believe is caching, as long as your friendly, polite and if they express a desire to be left alone, it is respected. We are usually a friendly load of people though and are always happy to chat to other cachers on our journeys. Oh, and well done on your first of what is sure to be many more.
  2. Was driving home from Chester last weekend and while on the motorway approaching Manchester, a car pulled up alongside, beeped their horn and held up a trackable to the window, unfortunately, they covered the code with their hands, oh well, nice to see someone else on the roads though.
  3. Hi everyone. I am planning on doing a large series of caches along a 3 mile walk along the canal and I was wondering, if I submitted a .kml file to a reviewer, would they be able to point out any possible trouble spots to stay away from ? I have walked along the canal many times in my past and it is a lovely walk, it could definately do with a good cache series. Any suggestions and help is appreciated.
  4. Hmmm, not sure about this as I have never done night caching, all I can think of is that it is to do with the amount of reflection you get, one having more sides than the other, a pyramid one would have only 3 sides visible to a torch light whereas the cube one would have 5 sides (four around the sides and one on top). I might be wrong though and it could be for another reason.
  5. I'll add my own penny worth Blorenges, after your lovely contribution. FTF = First To Find, meaning that your the first person to find a brand new cache, which is difficult due to people having a high desire to be the first to find those brand new caches, it is possible though. Tracking Bug = An item, usually a dog tag with a code on it, which makes it possible to locate through this website, most travel bugs or TB's have something attatched to them and have a mission and/or goal, your welcome to pick these items up but please move them onto another cache, especially if that cache helps with that travel bugs mission and/or goal, you do not have to trade a travel bug. Hope that helps somewhat.
  6. On the geocaching.com website, if it says "new" and the only log you see says "published", you can be pretty sure you stand a good chance of being FTF
  7. The website is now LIVE !!!! It's work in progress, but, please bookmark it and keep checking for constant updates.
  8. I bought the Garmin Etrex H for my son and it's not bad, but, my only gripes with it are, no cable for transfering coords, so, they have to be inputted by hand, which, due to the hard rubber buttons, tends to make the fingers sore. In addition, when powering up, it seemed to take ages to lock onto any satellite signals, whether this is due to it being the first time the device was used or it's typically a slow unit, I am unsure. Not too sure about it's accuracy either, but, will do more testing with the unit to find out.
  9. I agree, I don't believe there is a time limit on itunes podcasts, I myself have listened to podcasts from itunes that have been up to 30 minutes long. I have been thinking, if you wanted to do a podcast that was like an interview, I might consider submitting something along those lines, but, we shall see. I am planning on starting up a local geocaching website tonight, so, when your all set up and ready, I would be willing to advertise your podcasts through my own website to get the message out there.
  10. After much deliberation and consideration, I have decided to run a geocaching website aimed primarily at Geocachers in Sheffield, there isn't a massive amount in this city, but, for those who live here, I thought it might be nice for us to have a place to chat and share information. It goes live tonight (all being well). Sheff-Cachers Hoping to have a forum as well as local information on the geocaching world.
  11. Virtually most cheap GPSr's are good enough, they are designed for that specific job, the iphone isn't hence the lack of accuracy. If you do eventually get around to hiding a cache, take into consideration how you would feel finding whatever you hide, a lot of people tend to place 35mm canisters, which are okay, don't take a lot of thought and I feel are a little half hearted attempts at placing a cache, I always try and make my own caches to be something of substance, like lock and lock boxes, swapping trinkets is only a small part, but, it's nicer to find something of a decent size that has taken some thought into it. Spend more time caching and also try going to events, you learn a lot by talking to other cachers.
  12. Thought I might add my own advice to the mix. I have only found just over 100 caches, so, am pretty much classed as a newbie in a lot of respects, but, I have spent a lot of time learning what makes a good hide. With this knowledge, I knew of a suitable location and went and checked out the area where I was planning on hiding my series, with this information I bought all the items I required - lock and lock boxes, notepads, pencils, trinkets - and placed my caches, even after doing all that work, I had to go back and do maintenance on them as the coordinates was out on a few locations, but, thankfully, I can easily get to the caches and do any work on them if it is needed. So, do as much research as possible, a lot of geocachers appreciate it when effort and work is put into any hides that are placed.
  13. As a matter of curiosity, what trinkets was contained in that beast ?
  14. Congratulations to those who have just started and found their first caches. As you do more, you will start to think like a geocacher and start looking for the telltale signs of a possible cache location. It's well worth it.
  15. 1. Would you listen? Yes 2. Would you participate? Email? Yes Voice? No 3. Would you make suggestions for future podcasts? Yes 4. Would you given constructive criticism to make the podcast better? Yes 5. Where would you like to see the podcast available? iTunes? Website? Elsewhere? 1st iTunes, 2nd RSS, 3rd Webpage to read about content Would greatly appreciate a podcast based in the UK, I would definately listen to every episode. Hope that you manage to get it going.
  16. As the previous poster stated, the objective of geocoins and travel bugs is that they are moved from cache to cache, by keeping it, you are defeating the objective of that coin or travel bug, if your children like collecting coins or travel bugs, check out any website where they sell them and purchase your own, you don't have to "activate" them and can place them in folders or on display stands.
  17. Welcome to the hobby/sport/obsession. My advice is to wait for a while before hiding anything, get finding caches first. Too many people hide caches and haven't got a clue about accuracy or suitability of location. In addition, forget using the Iphone to hide the cache, it is extremely inaccurate and will lead to lots of DNF's (Did Not Finds) which will put people off. Spend more time caching, read the forum posts, there is lots of useful information within these pages and save up for a decent GPSr before even considering placing your first hide. Hope that helps.
  18. Had my car TB "discovered" this week, it was parked in Middleton and got logged, felt pretty cool knowing someone had seen it. Should hopefully get a few more on Sunday.
  19. Me is detecting a hint of desperation, not an attractive feature. I myself have had bad experiences from plentyoffish.com and after recovering from a bad relationship and learning how to be happy with the life I had, Mrs Perfect came along and swept me off my feet, I wasn't a geocacher at the time, but, she accompanies me on my caching travels, she is my soul mate. My advice is, stop looking and someone will come along.
  20. That would be a bit hard seeing as the Wapentake doesn't exist anymore and I believe it is now called the Casbah, not too sure on that one though.
  21. Well, I am still on the lookout for geocachers to help or to accompany on their geocaching travels, I myself geocache in both Sheffield and Manchester, so, I can cover two areas. If anyone wants help or just some friendly company while out caching, give me a shout. Additionally, I am running my first event in Sheffield this coming June the 19th, newbies are just as welcome as are the more knowledgable people.
  22. What does TFTC mean? It means "Thanks For The Cache" a short but sweet response.
  23. Just leave it in another cache and go on the website, click on "Trackable Items", enter the code on the coin and on the right hand side of the screen, choose to "Found It? Log It!" and place a nice little note about where you retrived it from explaining that it wasn't stated as being in the cache you found it in, and yes, you can pass it onto another geocacher as long as you do the same thing but state that you have passed it onto another cacher. The cacher who collected the coin should then log that they retrieved the coin themselves.
