  1. Hi and welcome to this obsession.

The topo on your GPSr is topological maps, which allow you to see elevations as well as other details, it helps if you need to see any hills or steep climbs towards a cache location.

As the others have said, best thing is to get out there and make a start, that is how I did it.

I myself am still pretty new to the hobby, but, am well and truly hooked and plan on making it to the 1,000 finds eventually.

    Happy hunting.

  2. That's fine ChaceGuild, I am free from tuesday to thursday during the day, so, just let me know when your up for some help and company.

If anyone else could also do with some help and advice while out geocaching, and your going to be in the Sheffield area, just let me know and I would be happy to come along and give you any help you require.

  3. How long do people have to been geocaching before they can adopt someone so as to show them the ropes and give them advice ?

There are no rules about it.

I guess once you feel confident that you know how it all works and you don't need to ask questions yourself then you're ready to take a newer cacher under your wing.

I guess I am ready to take someone under my wing then, I am confident enough now to be able to educate others and help them, plus, I have a lot of respect for nature and the areas where I go, I always respect the land and creatures that reside there.

It would be lovely to pass the knowledge onto someone else who shares my enthusiasm for geocaching.

So, if anyone in the Sheffield or South Yorkshire region requires help from a fellow GC'er, then get in touch, I am always happy to help.

  4. So far I have met two fellow geocachers, first one was easy to work out considering that they was stood at a bridge sliding their hand all over the underside, obviously looking for something.

Second one was someone stood up a hill holding an iphone with a decidedly puzzled expression on their face.

It's very easy to spot me as a geocacher as I have both the geocaching logo patch on my coat arm, a geocaching.com lanyard and a badge on my backpack.

I don't mind advertising the fact that I am a geocacher, I am proud to be one, plus, I feel having such items on my person helps other geocachers recognise the fact that I am a geocacher and it's always nice to chat to fellow geocachers in the field (think I said geocachers too much there, will abbreviate it to GC from now on).

  5. First and foremost, welcome to geocaching, it's very addictive.

Not sure what you mean about printing something, you DO have to log your find, both in the logbook contained within the cache container and also on the website.

If you need further help, just ask.

  6. I had a similar situation today, was just walking after finding a cache and saw someone standing halfway up a hill with an iphone in his hand and a baffled expression on his face, so, I worked out it was a fellow geocacher.

I introduced myself and asked if he was after the cache I had just bagged, he said yes, I then asked if he preferred to find it himself or would he like any help.

I find that being polite, kind and helpful is usually appreciated, when I pointed him in the right direction, I just said my goodbyes and left him to it.

I myself like people to give a little help when it is needed, although I love the sense of acheivement when I find a cache myself.

  7. It's not too likely that the caches I place will get muggled as I tend to make sure that I hide them well enough so that only a cacher would be able to spot them, plus, the proposed stretch of path I am doing this is not in receipt of high traffic, so, not much risk from that, the beauty is also I can get to this stretch of path easily enough to maintain it on a regular basis.

  8. That is something I have been considering come summer time, it all depends on time and such like as I am a full time carer, which makes it difficult to dedicate too much time to something like organising an event, but, we shall see.

  9. After a lot of deliberation and thinking, I have come to the conclusion to create a series of traditionals with a small puzzle element to them, so, that to find the final cache, you have to retrieve the coords from the other log books, this should encourage people to find all of the caches, but, people can still do the existing caches and come back to the ones they miss, hopefully this shouldn't alienate people and should be fun for everyone.

The final cache would more than likely be a larger cache so that there is a good sense of achievement, I myself love to find the larger caches, so, this might encourage people to search for the final location.

  10. I have been thinking about this for a while now.

I have come across some caches where the log book was soaking wet or in such a bad state that it is unusable, I always carry blank log books just in case, but, was wondering, if you find a cache that requires maintenance, should you do it yourself and let the CO know, or, should you leave it as it is and just inform the CO without doing anything ?

Because, was wondering, you can purchase cache maintenance kits, are they specifically for your own caches or so you can help other people ?

  11. My intention was doing a multi cache along the lines of the one at dadgum Flask - GC1Z1GH

This specific multi seems popular and consists of a total of 14 caches around a dadgum, this is a multi cache but the other caches after the first are marked out as gps coordinates, you need to solve a clue to get to the first cache though.

I was considering something similar with coordinates being placed in each log book and the cacher has to locate each one to get the next part of the cordinate, the walk is not too long and wouldn't take too long and there is a bus service that can bring someone back to the starting area.

It might be eight locations, it might be less, the point of the coords was to show the reviewer the proposed route to ensure that it didn't encroach on any private property or flag up any issues, which, thankfully, it doesn't seem to have done.

    Edited:

I have however, just seen a forum post about the length of multi caches and it seems that a lot of people are put off by a large number of multi cache locations, but, prefer traditional caches, which might be the better option, with the possibility of the final cache locations being cut down into individual numbers and placed in the back of each previous log book.

  12. 1. The best way to have a reviewer check your coordinates (especially this many) is to prepare a cache page in "draft" form, with the locations input as Additional Waypoints. Otherwise the reviewer needs to input all those coordinates manually.

    2. I know next to nothing about land manager rules and permission practices in Sheffield. The best ways to solicit help from your local reviewers are to submit a draft cache page, write an email or post in the United Kingdom and Ireland forum. I am moving your thread there, so that the local experts can help you.

    3. I'm afraid you may have just "spoiled" your multicache by posting all these details!

I'm not a reviewer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once... :anibad:

It looks like a neat multi. When I first read your post, I got the (mistaken) impression that the stages would be at the old factories. That could've presented problems. A bit of poking about in Google Earth set me straight. My only concern is going from stage 4 to stage 5. It looks like I'd take Beeley Wood Ln to the end, which appears to end in a factory parking lot. I don't know that I'd be comfortable walking across a factory property, even if is was closed.

Have you written Deceangi? Looks like that's the local reviewer.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the speedy reply guys.

    Firstly, to keystone.....

I am not sure how to prepare a cache page in draft form, I would assume that I go to the form page and fill it in and it allows me to save it as a "draft", I shall check that out and see.

As regards spoiling the multicache, as I have stated, those are not the final coords, it is a proposed list, and they are in no way the final locations, but, needed to list a rough listing to show the locations where I was thinking of.

Riffster, thank you for your suggestions, I shall see if Deceangi is available.

The stage 4 - 5 caches are okay as there is a path that goes around the factory, so, I am sure that there wouldn't be any walking through factories, I used to live close by this location and have walked this path a fair few times.

Right, thanks again so far, if any further comments can be given, they shall be greatly appreciated.

  13. Hi all

I am considering placing my first multi-cache and have got a very good possibility lined up, but, as far as I know, it isn't somewhere that permission can be requested as it is on a stretch of road that leads into a woodland area, it is a public road and the places I am considering are not owned by anyone, it is disused factories and such like, I shall post the coords and if people can check them out and give any advice, it would be welcomed, thanks.

These are rough co-ords and are likely to be altered in some small way so as to help with keeping the puzzle element and to take into considerations such as suitable hide locations.

    Co-ords are as follows :-

    First Cache

    N53 25.103 W001 30.341

    Second Cache

    N53 25.237 W001 30.434

    Third Cache

    N53 25.306 W001 30.804

    Fourth Cache

    N53 25.377 W001 31.202

    Fifth Cache

    N53 25.549 W001 31.438

    Sixth Cache

    N53 25.722 W001 31.658

    Seventh Cache

    N53 26.037 W001 32.017

    Final Cache

    N53 26.159 W001 32.265

This would take people along a woodland path via waterfalls and some very attractive scenery starting at Middlewood in Sheffield and ending at Oughtibridge.

If anyone sees possible problems, let me know.

  14. Hi all.

I have been considering starting up a Sheffield web based organisation for geocaching, I have the means with which to get a website sorted, but, there isn't any point unless there are interested people.

So, who would like a geocache website for Sheffield based people ?

  15. Well, I myself have purchased a Car magnetic TB and have got it placed on the back of mine and my partners car (we co-own it).

I have also placed the dog tags dangling from the rear view mirror, so, they are both located in the same place.

I shall be attending the 10 Years of Geocaching event in Manchester, so, look out for a red Seat Ibiza with a magnetic TB and get it logged.

  16. Just wanted to add a question to this thread....

When placing a signature item, is it a requirement to have the date of the placing of the item marked on the item or would it be better to sign the log as well as place the signature item ?

I myself have made some business cards but haven't included any dates, but, if need be, I can add a date specific to the day I am caching using a cd marker pen, or, should I just write in the log book as well as place the item ?
