  1. OK. First off, thanks for all the feedback. As for those who do not like the idea simply because it seems like work, like earthcaches, all I can say is that no one is forcing you to find every cache. If you do not like it simply skip the cache. As for those who think this would cause a bunch of caches near historic markers, you have missed the point. These would be caches that would be placed in places were traditional caches with a physical container are not allowed, such as battlefields, national parks, and archeological sites. If people want to place a cache near a marker that is not on land that has rules against physical caches then they can currently do so without the need of a special cache. Now for the fact checking questions. Earth caches are indeed fact checked by the reviewers, that is why they have a different set of reviewers. When you submit a new earth cache you are required to submit a list of sources as well as the answers to your questions. As for local history, this is not as difficult a thing to check out as one might think. You would be required to submit a list of sources. The reviewer could check those as well as online information. You would be surprised what one can find out about local history if you consult the proper academic journals on sites like jstor.org. In addition you would also have to submit the answers you are expecting to receive from other cachers. Most people who know anything about history can tell the difference between true history and BS, lol. A review board would not have to necessarily be comprised of members of one particular organization. The Frog could approve, qualified reviewers on a case by case basis. Finally as to the fact that these would be like virtuals, I point you to earth caches. These would be just like earth caches which do not have physical containers with log books. To those who suggest just going to waymaking, I ask, why not just move earth caches there too? All I ask is a way to introduce fellow cachers to some history. I do not know about other cachers, but I do not bother with the waymaking site or most of the challenges for that matter.
  2. I apologize if this has all ready been discussed. I searched the forums but could find no other threads on this topic. First, let me start by saying, as an archeologist and teacher, I love Earth Caches. These caches not only take cachers to interesting places but also teach them about the environment around them. However there are many interesting places that are off limits to earth caches due to their lack of an earth science connection. Now I know that there are several earth caches that tie together earth science and history, but the history is only mentioned as an afterthought. What I am proposing is the creation of a new cache category, History Caches. These caches would be set up in a similar fashion to the current earth caches but focus on showing cachers the history of a given place. These types of caches would also be great because they would allow for the placement of caches in more sensitive locations such as battlefields, national parks, and archeological sites. These locations are currently off limits to geocaches, with the exception of grandfathered virtuals, due to the fact that the governing bodies do not want visitors destroying the history of the site in the name of finding a container. By creating this new type of virtual, cachers would be able to introduce one another to many interesting places they might other wise never learn about. These caches would also need to go through a similar review process as the one currently utilized for earth caches. A group of qualified, historians, teachers, archeologist, etc, volunteer reviewers would read through and fact check the listing before they are published to make sure all of the information listed for the site is correct and unbiased. So now that I have said my piece, what do you all think? Good idea, bad idea, suggestions? I for one would be willing to volunteer my time to see this dream made into a reality!

  4. Is this just a one day event or will it be an ongoing challenge? I believe this will be going until the coins are gone. OK. Do you have a link for a page and or bookmark list of the caches involved?

  6. Kentucky Bourbon Trail added for all those who are attending GeoWoodstock X!
  7. Thanks for all the information! Keep them coming folks!
  8. If you know of any such trails in Arizona I would be more than happy to add them to the list. If none exist, maybe you should take it upon yourself to talk to local organizations to create one. Here is a link to a forum post about starting such a trail. Link

  10. Thanks for the update. That was one of the handful of trails I was not sure about due to their website still being active.
  11. I looked at the link you posted. It sounds like it may be a geotrail, but makes no mention of any prize for completing the series. The list compiled in this thread are all geotrails (group/state sponsored series of caches) which reward finders with some sort of prize for finding x number of caches. Generally these prizes are geocoins, but other prizes are also listed. So I guess what I'm asking of you is, do they give you some sort of prize for completing this program?
  12. List has been updated. Thank you all for your support. As to Mr. Yuck's question, I knew before typing this list that part of it was in Pennsylvania but chose to put it with New York since the majority of the trail falls in that state. If people are interested in the trail they can click on the attached link and see that a few are in Pennsylvania, but not far from New York. OK everyone please keep the active trail information coming! I would love to be able to add some more for Canada!
  13. I figured with the new year here we could all use a new list of active geotrails with rewards. Please feel free to post any information you might have about any active or upcoming trails. Also if any on this list are no longer in place please let me know. For now this list will be limited to trails in North America, but I will add ones from other parts of the world as they are mentioned. Updates to this list will be made here on the original post. 14. Anyone else have some feelings about a cache like this?
  15. So my wife, SexyJenPharaohQueen, had an idea for a joke cache last night and asked me to run it past some people to see what they think of the idea. After reading all the stories of people using geocaching to propose to their significant other, she thought it would be funny to create a cache with a name something along the lines of "I hope you find this before your girl!" Inside the cache would be a big note that says "Will you marry me?" The idea would be to hide this one around April Fools day. So what does everyone think? Is this funny or maybe a little cruel? Thanks for the feedback!
  16. I did not create the list. I simply book marked the page when it came out last year. As for creating a list for trails outside the US, you can do what was done to create this list. Create a topic asking people to list all the geotrails for a particular country and compile a list as you go.
  17. Here is a list of all the current geotrail with coin rewards. Corfmania List of Geotrails You will have to check to see which ones are still ongoing. If they still have coins left I highly recommend you check out the Allegheny Geotrail in western Pennsylvania sooner rather than latter. Hope this helps.
  18. Anyone looking for a caching partner for the new year? I'm located in north east Ohio, in the Youngstown area.
  19. NE Ohio is great for bike caching. Over the past few years this part of the state has begun to really get into the Rail to Trails program, with a goal of a continuous bike trail from the shores of Lake Erie to the banks of the Ohio River. As the various sections of the trail have come online so to have many fun caches. We even have a night cache, on the part of the trail that runs near my house, that can be completed on your bike. If your ever in the area I would check it out if I were you!
  20. Any chance any of these coins are left? I would love to pick up one or two.
  21. Sure is not the worst thing ever used as a TB. Found one around me where the owner had the bright idea of attaching a deactivated hand grenade to the TB because he thought it looked "cool." Never mind the fact that caches already get mistaken for bombs. The only problem I see with the phone idea other than the fact that it will most likely get swiped pretty quick is the fact that you can donate old phones to battered women shelters. If you do go through with it do make sure to remove the sim card as other have mentioned, but also make sure to power it up one last time and erase all of the contacts and passwords from the memory. Even though you are planning to pull the battery if someone wanted to they could still fire the phone up and retrieve all kinds of information.
  22. There is one near me that a local cacher placed in remembrance of his wife near the gazebo where they were married. There is no agenda in this sort of cache unless you were to use the cache page to attack the gas company. Though based on your description this does not seem the case. I say go for it and if there are any issues you can work them out with the reviewer. Sorry about that tragedy, though I'm glad to hear the young man is doing better.
  23. Thanks. I sent a request to the people at the frog so I'll just have to wait and see now.
  24. Thanks for the bump, but seriously. Does anyone know who to contact about this issue?
