Not as dramatic, but perhaps fun for the kids, a couple weeks ago, I tore a $5 in half, and put both into two caches a couple miles apart. Put a note in with each in a ziploc saying the other half was nearby.

Might sound strange, but one of the things I like about geocaching is that I don't find every single one. I think if I did, it wouldn't be as much fun. And when I do find a cache, the "yeah!" factor is a little stronger.
