  1. Didn't you just post on another thread that you were quitting Geocaching? Dude you typed a whole page with reasons and every thing. What the hell?
  2. If the cache that I'm doing was properly built. As in the cacher took time to paint it,hide it in a good location etc. I will put some swag back in. I carry a 1 qt size ziploc bag with me with various swag items in it. I do however make it a point to restock my caches. Granted I only have four hides out right now. I decided to make it a point to only restock the caches that are very close to my house. As time goes on and my hide count goes up I will have to trust that my fellow cachers will pay it forward like I do. I also try to help repair caches that are in very bad condition. I would like think that other cachers would do the same for me. I enjoy trading swag just as much as I enjoy finding the cache. So as for me whats five bucks worth of swag. I mean a fast food meal is five dollars or more. So if that means I spend a little $ to make someone else have an awesome day thats prefectly fine by me.
  3. Place the cache man. I found a geocache (GC326C) that was placed in January of 2002. I found the cache in March 2010. The cache is a medium size ammo can. In a half developed park that the county abandoned. I know the cache says its a two star which might have been the case back in 2002. But with all the rainfall from 2002 till now plus all the overgrowth. The cache could easily be classified as a four star. At one point I found myself walking almost waist deep in dead leafs. Thinking to myself that this has to be where they filmed the Blair Witch Project. When I found the cache the log was perfectly dry. To which I might add that the cache was placed on a bank of a one time little stream. Ammo cans make the best extreme caches. Theres a reason why the military still uses them. As far as the maintence side I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you place te cache where its not going to swept away by a river. Which honestly you have a better chance of a muggle teenager destorying an urban cache than Mother nature decideing to swallow up your cache. Just make sure to explain the situation in cache page. And ask anyone who is going to be atempting the cache to please be prepared to preform some maintance. As the area is very remote. Look at it this way the cache I found the owner hasn't logged in since January of 2008. And his first cache is one of the oldest caches in my area. Which I am saving for my 100th cache (GC29AO). Look at it this way man the people who are going to atempting to find your cache are going to be out there for the real reason. Your cache is just a bonus.
  4. Good morning all, I have hidden three traditional Geocahes. I want to hide a Multi Cache. I am a little confuse on the process though. Do I hide the first cache in one location and then give the location for the second cache in the first one? Or do I hide all of the caches, get them published then and give part of the final coords in each one. If anyone has any help with this it would be very appreciated. Thanks- Shrekito
  5. I know how to find the events calender on the Geocaching website. But how do I find the page for my local events? Rather then searching throught each date.
  6. I know cache owners who have DNFed their own caches before, and have had to ask recent finders for hints. I bet they would disagree with the assertion that there is absolutely no searching involved when you're the cache owner. If they were good cache owners. And did proper matinence or read the post notes to their caches. Maybe they wouldn't have to search for their cache, or ask other cachers. Read into this however you like. Once the cache is placed and active. Even if it is switched over to another owner. You still shouldn't log it as a found cache. But hey its cool if you want to log it then fine log it. But as for me I will have the piece of mind to know that all of my smiley faces were EARNED the right way. And not by sandbagging geocaches!
  7. I totally agree this is not a contest at all. But on that note. I do feel like after I took the time to find the cache that I earned that smiley. It just doesn't seem right. I mean theres absoulty no searching involved when your the cache owner,or old cache owner.
  8. The title pretty much says it all. I don't think there is a policy on this. But do you guys log your own Geocache hides? I am trying to find all the caches around my house moving in a basic circle pattern. And I notice that on a couple of caches some of the owners posted a found log. To me this is a B.S.way of getting a smiley face.
  9. I feel the same way about hidng nanos/micros. More cachers = more crap caches nanos/mircos Personally I love trading items. Maybe its because I am a kid at heart. I hid my first cache about a month ago. I made sure it was an ammo can and I made sure to put some goodies as well as a T.B. in the cache. I am thinking about stocking it up once every three months just to make sure theres lot of goodies for the kids.
  10. I will definately will be subscriping. I mean come on its only $8 bucks. A large fastfood meal cost about that much. I mean seriously your complaining about the name!? Its a friggen name. How many of you will gladly shell out the money the buy a TB tag or a Geocoin? But not a magazine that will offer more information to get people to start Geocaching that might not have known about it in the first place. Do you know how I found out about Geocaching? From an episode of C.S.I. I though it was a joke at first. Then once I googled it I found out this is something I could really enjoy. There seems like there is alot of neagativity on this fourm. The best way to drive new comers away from this sport is to be neagative.
  11. When I come across a DNF I always post it to the cache page. Like someone said a few posts up. By logging a DNF it lets the cache owner know that multiple people have been looking for it. Take Saturday for instance I when to an area that had two caches aprox. 1/2 mile apart placed by the same person. I found the first one right away. When I got to the second one I searched for about twenty minutes then left. When I got home I posted a DNF and the area I was looking in. About fifthteen minutes later I recieved an e-mail from the cache owner telling me that I was searching in the wrong area. His e-mail helped alot I am going to go back next week and try it again.
  12. I don't know if its against the guidelines. But I throw them away. If you want to leave a card fine. Have some cards printed up with your screen name on them. If not don't leave them in the cache. All they do is clog up the cache. And personaly I put them in the same place I put relgious pamplets "the trash".
  13. I recently started taking a back pack with my on my Geocaching trips. But learning from a recent hobbie (rc car racing). I didn't want to take my entire garage with me either. Now don't get me wrong theres nothing wrong with being prepared. I packed my backpack with the basics batterys, extra logs, extra pens/pencils,a knife etc. But what I am starting to realize now is that I am going to have to have two bags for Geocaching. One for urban caching and one for rural caching. Theres just no way around it. You may want to take a look at what kind of caching you do and go from there.
  14. I turned WAAS off. I'm entitled to use that signal without the degradation caused by sharing it. Just wait your dadgum turn! I thought WAAS a feature that made your GPS more accurate but at the cost of more battery usage?
  15. Don't worry about it dude, BMs get to leach from inactive PMs. I am not going to be a BM for long. I am planning on hiding my first cache this weekend. And I would like it to be a PM cache. So this is serious then? So basically theres only so many satelites in the sky right. And each one only has the power to link up with lets say 1000 Gpsr's. So what it boils down to is that is getting harder and harder to hook up with the satelites with more and more Geocachers useing up all the signals?
  16. Can someone please attach a link somewhere about this topic. I am very confused and would like to know more about this. Is this a joke? I read a couple of post down that someone said they reached their cache limit for the day? Theres a cache limit?
  17. Like T4e said the swag is more for the kids. But I always try to arm myself with good swag. I when to Micheals (arts and crafts store) and raided the dollar bin. But rather than buying crappy swag. I ask myself how well will this hold up in a cache? Is it going to dry out and break? Just questions like that mostly. To tell you the truth I love swag its almost as cool for me to find swag as it is to find the cache. I guess I'm a kid at heart. I do sometimes add some swag to a cache that is lacking good stuff. I have been recently throwing away bad swag. Expired coupons, super saver cards to stores that have gone belly up etc. I feel like its my duty as a Geocacher to help make sure the kids have a good time too.
  18. Do they sign the logs? Or do they use pre-signed stickers? Almost all the caches I have found in my local area they have found. And its almost always been a pre signed sticker on the log.
  19. Do you even know what a "dead drop" is? Any cop who was aggressive at someone doing a dead drop would likely get fired. The rest of the comment seems a little paranoid. I assure you that police are human beings. Any cop who would write you a ticket for putting swag in a cache is likely going to write you a ticket for anything he can. That's NOT a good cop. I do know what a dead drop is. Which is commonly used by drug dealers by the way. But when your encountering a law enforcement officer. They are already suspicious of what your doing in the first place. Theres not need to esclate the situation by saying I'm doing a Geo dead drop. I understand police are human beings but they are also trained to deal with stressful situations and being a smarta*** and not being upfront with what your doing isn't very smart. I mean my god man where have you been since 9-11. You can't even take nail clippers on an airplane. What makes you think that cop wouldn't think twice about tazing you or shooting you on site. If they feel threatened or if the situation becomes hostle. Take a look at your GPS man. From a far and in the dark it looks like a remote. Maybe for a bomb, he doesn't know what your doing. Theres no reason to be a smart because you have the right too.
  20. I saw this article on line while searching for geocaching supplies. I though it was kind of cool. http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=10183611
  21. [snip. Just wanted to throw this out there so if there's any idiots like me who haven't been smart and keeping people informed of where they are in the woods, maybe they should start. Tomorrow is day 3 of the search for this guy, hope they find him. I am glad someone brought this up. I was out caching the other day. Enjoying the beautiful Southern California weather we are blessed with. When I realized that I was about 1,000 from my car and on top of a small hill. What if I was climbing down and broke my leg? Or from a recent thread on here. Was bite by a rattle snake? I read up on the rattle snake thing. They said if the bite has venom in it and you don't get treatment with in two hours you could be dead. I was like wow how many times now have I been caching on some back road and left my cell phone or my knife in my car? So lucky for me the area that I cache in has really good cell service. I thought about letting someone know where I was going but my wife isn't too crazy about me caching in the first place. Hopefully that will change when I get her out on the trail this weekend. I notice that alot of cachers take backpacks with them. Which I hadn't thought about since I do most of my caching on my way home from work. So last night I packed a backpack with my running shoes, shorts my cell phone, my rechargeable NiMh pack kit, pretty much everything I think I am going to need when I'm caching. Along with some stuff to do matinence on a cache if it really needs it. Once the wife starts caching with me I will most likely start caching on the weekend with her, instead of during the week by myself. On a side note if you want a good book to read about this very topic. read Aron Ralston: Between a rock and a hard place. It will really but things into retrospect.
  22. I too have been stopped by Law Enforcement. And as always honesty is the best policy. Haven't you guys ever watched "COPS"? The officers always tell people tell me the truth and you will be in alot less trouble. Because if I find out your lieing your going to jail. Anyway I was on my 18th or 19th cache and was in a neighborhood which bordered a field. I was looking for a gaurd rail cache. I had parked by car along side the sidewalk. And was about 10 or 15 feet from my car. When I notice that a R.S.O. ( Riverside County Sheriff) had pulled up behind me. I walked back to my car and kindly waited for him to get out of his car. The conversation was Officer: How you doing today? Me: Great, I bet your wonder why I am walking around searching through the weeds next to this gaurd rail with a G.P.S. in my hand. Officer: The thought had crossed my mind Me: I then explained that I was Geocaching and explained the process to him Officer: Thats a new one I haven't heard that one before. Me: I then asked if I was doing anything Illegal or if I was breaking some kind of law. Officer: No your fine. He then explained he was just doing this afternoon rounds. He also asked if I had found it yet. Me: No :/ I have been searching for quite a while. I then explained that if I don't find it I will move on to another cache. Officer: Have a good day and stay safe. My experince with law enforcement also comes from my time as a voulenteer fire fighter. With having talked to numerious law enforcement officers and well as my brother in-law who is R.S.O. that just tell the truth. Most of the time they don't give a s*** what your doing as long as its not illegal and they don't have to write a report on it. You have to understand that these guys deal with the worst that society has to offer. The last thing they need is us being smart asses and give them attitude. When have you ever seen a good example of attiude towards a cop work in someones favor? Oh and to the other cacher who said he would just tell them he is doing a "GEO dead-drop". Thats a good way to get your a** shot or arrested. The officers can make your life hell if they really want to. I have seen the list of the things that they can give you a ticket for. And I am sure they could give your a ticket for dropping some swag into a cache. i.e. littering I'm not sure what the fine in your state is for littering but here in California is $1000 so be nice and don't give the sport a bad name.
  23. Thats exactly why I never reach into a cache. Just in case it was been muggled or something dumb was dropped in. I always empty the cache out on the ground or on the passenger seat. Just in case you never know.....
